        Parental Involvement, Children’s Learning Needs and Reading Motivation of Young Chinese EFL Readers

        본 연구의 목적은 부모의 학습관여가 아동의 영어독해능력과 학습동기에 미치는 영향에 대해 알아보는 데에 있다. 지금까지의 아동영어교육은 학교맥락에서 연구되어왔으며, 가정의 교육환경에 대해서는 본격적으로 논의된 바 없다. 이러한 연구의 필요성을 토대로 본 연구에서는 중국인 아동영어 학습자를 대상으로 부모의 자녀의 학습관여, 아동의 학습욕 구, 모국어 외국어 읽기 동기를 측정하였다. 278명의 초등학생과 학부모를 대상으로 설문과 영어 읽기 검사를 실시하였다. 그 결과 부모의 학습관여는 아동의 읽기동기와 읽기성취에 주요한 역할을 하는 것으로 드러났다. 반면 부모의 교육배경이나 아동의 성별과는 유의미한 상관관계가 나타나지 않았다. 아동들은 소속감에 대한 욕구에 가장 큰 만족감을 느끼 고, 존중감의 욕구에 대해 가장 낮은 만족감을 보였다. 다중회귀분석결과 첫째. 사교육비와 부모관여는 아동의 독해능력을 예측하는데 다소 낮은 요인이었고, 둘째, 자기 실행 욕구는 내적읽기 동기의 가장 큰 요인이었으며, 학부모의 관여는 영어 읽기 동기보다, 모국어 읽기 동기에 더 큰 영향을 주는 것으로 나타났다. 마지막으로 부모의 교육수준과 사교육비지 출은 아동의 내적 읽기 동기에 유의미한 영향을 미치지 못하는 것으로 나타났다. Studies on teaching English as a foreign language (EFL) in children have extensively focused on the school context, but the home environment has not been fully studied. In the present study, parental involvement, children’s learning needs, and reading motivation were measured to explain young Chinese EFL readers’ behaviors. The participants were 278 primary school students, together with their parents, who completed questionnaires and an English reading test. The results revealed that parental involvement had a prevalent role in facilitating children’s reading motivation and achievement, and it did not vary in terms of parents’ educational backgrounds and children’s gender. The children reported the highest degree of satisfaction with belonging needs, but the lowest with esteem needs. Multiple regression analyses indicated that (1) the extra instructional spend and parental involvement were weak predictors of children’s EFL reading performance; (2) self-actualization needs were found to be the best predictor of intrinsic reading motivation, and parental involvement had a stronger impact on children’s first language intrinsic reading motivation than on EFL; and (3) neither parents’ educational background nor extra instructional spend influenced children’s EFL intrinsic reading motivation.

        Blind Quality Metric via Measurement of Contrast, Texture, and Colour in Night-Time Scenario

        Night-time image quality evaluation is an urgent requirement in visual inspection. The lighting environment of night-time results in low brightness, low contrast, loss of detailed information, and colour dissonance of image, which remains a daunting task of delicately evaluating the image quality at night. A new blind quality assessment metric is presented for realistic night-time scenario through a comprehensive consideration of contrast, texture, and colour in this article. To be specific, image blocks’ color-gray-difference (CGD) histogram that represents contrast features is computed at first. Next, texture features that are measured by the mean subtracted contrast normalized (MSCN)-weighted local binary pattern (LBP) histogram are calculated. Then statistical features in Lαβ colour space are detected. Finally, the quality prediction model is conducted by the support vector regression (SVR) based on extracted contrast, texture, and colour features. Experiments conducted on NNID, CCRIQ, LIVE-CH, and CID2013 databases indicate that the proposed metric is superior to the compared BIQA metrics.

      • Variety of Recombinant Inbred Line Population and Creation of Germplasm with High Yield in Sorghum-Sudan Grass

        Sorghum-Sudan grass which is an annual forage grass in Gramineae have been bred for biomass promotion. The recombinant inbred line (RIL) populations were derived from the F2:3 genetic mapping population of Sorghum 314A×zongke Sudan grass. The breeding selection based on agronomic characters and DNA molecular marker statistical analysis was carried among the progenies of the RIL populations, and 9 recombinant breeding progenies were determined as heterobeltiosis with high yield. According to DNA diversity analysis of simple sequence of repeats(SSR) marker, the genetic varieties were abundant among the families, and the recombinant breeds of high yield were distributed among the different RIL populations.2 family lines, which have similar agronomic characters and yield, and whose genetic distance nearly equal to zero, showed difference on arid tolerance. 4 breeding lines were selected on agronomic characters and resistance in the field trials, and 2 breed lines were qualified for the regional testing.

        Analytical Models for the Electric Potential, Threshold Voltage and Drain Current of Long-channel Junctionless Double-gate Transistors

        Analytical models for the electric potential, threshold voltage and drain current of long-channel junctionless (JL) double-gate (DG) field-effect transistors (FET) are presented. A regional method is used to solve the Poisson equation under different gate biases, and the electric potential is obtained. With the potential model, an analytical expression for the threshold voltage is achieved. An expression for the drain current is derived from the potential model. The analytical results are compared with simulations, and excellent agreements are observed. The models accurately describe the characteristics of JLDG FETs, and they are very helpful for the design and optimization of devices.

        Ultrastructure structure of antennal sensilla of carabid beetle Carabus elysii Thomson, 1856 (Coleoptera: Carabidae)

        The sensilla type, number and distribution in male and female adults of Carabus elysii Thomson, 1856 (Coleoptera: Carabidae) were studied using scanning electron microscopy. The results showed that there are seven categories and 12 types of sensilla in C. elysii adults: three types of S.Ch, three types of S.T, two types of S.B and one each of B.B, S.Co, S.Ca and S.Cam. There is no difference between male and female in the types of sensilla. Apart from the significant difference in the number and distribution of S.B.2, S.Co and S.Ca between male dorsal and ventral surfaces, there are no significant differences between male and female antennae. In general, the number of sensilla in females is larger than that in males. The results provide a basic reference for future ultrastructure, electrophysiological, and comparative behavioral studies of Carabus species.

        The complete mitochondrial genome of Vanessa indica and phylogenetic analyses of the family Nymphalidae

        Vanessa indica is a small butterfly lacking historical molecular and biological research. Vanessa indica belongs to the family Nymphalidae (Lepidoptera: Papilionoidea), which is the largest group of butterflies and are nearly ubiquitous. However, after more than a century of taxonomic and molecular studies, there is no consensus for family classification, and the phylogenetic relationships within Nymphalidae are controversial. The first objective was to sequence and characterize the complete mitochondrial genome of V. indica. The most important objective was to completely reconstruct the phylogenetic relationships for family members within Nymphalidae. The mitochondrial genomic DNA (mtDNA) of V. indica was extracted and amplified by polymerase chain reaction. The complete mitochondrial sequence was annotated and characterized by analyzing sequences with SeqMan program. The phylogenetic analyses were conducted on thirteen protein coding genes (PCGs) in 95 mtDNA of Nymphalidae downloaded from GenBank for reference using the maximum likelihood method and Bayesian inference to ensure the validity of the results. The complete mitogenome was a circular molecule with 15,191 bp consisting of 13 protein coding genes, two ribosomal RNA genes (16S rRNA and 12S rRNA), 22 transfer RNA (tRNA) genes, and an A + T-rich region (D-loop). The nucleotide composition of the genome was highly biased for A + T content, which accounts for 80.0% of the nucleotides. All the tRNAs have putative secondary structures that are characteristic of mitochondrial tRNAs, except tRNASer(AGN). All the PCGs started with ATN codons, except cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (COX1), which was found to start with an unusual CGA codon. Four genes were observed to have unusual codons: COX1 terminated with atypical TT and the other three genes terminated with a single T. The A + T rich region of 327 bp consisted of repetitive sequences, including a ATAGA motif, a 19-bp poly-T stretch, and two microsatellite-like regions (TA)8. The phylogenetic analyses consistently placed Biblidinae as a sister cluster to Heliconiinae and Calinaginae as a sister clade to Satyrinae. Moreover, the phylogenetic tree identified Libytheinae as a monophyletic group within Nymphalidae. The complete mitogenome of V. indica was 15,191 bp with mitochondrial characterizations common for lepidopteran species, which enriched the mitochondria data of Nymphalid species. And the phylogenetic analysis revealed different classifications and relationships than those previously described. Our results are significant because they would be useful in further understanding of the evolutionary biology of Nymphalidae.

        The complete mitochondrial genome of Damora sagana and phylogenetic analyses of the family Nymphalidae

        The monotypic genus Damora (Nymphalidae, Heliconiinae) contains a single species, Damora sagana, which is widely distributed across southern China. Herein, its complete mitogenome was sequenced to further understand lepidopteran mitogenome characteristics, reconstruct the nymphalid family phylogeny, and infer the subdivision of Heliconiinae species. The circular mitogenome was 15,151 bp long, abundant in A and T, and comprised of 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), 22 transfer RNA (tRNA) genes, 2 ribosomal RNA (rRNA) genes, and one control region with a gene arrangement typical of lepidopteran mitogenomes. ATN codons initiated all PCGs, except cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (COX1), which was initiated by a CGA sequence as has been observed in other lepidopterans. Three PCGs (COX1, COX2 and ND4) employed a single T termination signal, whereas others had the typical complete termination codon (TAA). All tRNA genes were folded into the typical cloverleaf structure except for tRNA-Ser (AGN). The A+T-rich region included the conserved motif ‘ATAGA’ followed by a 17 bp poly-T stretch, which was also observed in tribe Argynnini mitogenomes. A phylogenetic tree was constructed via multiple methods using the 13 PCGs data of D. sagana and other available mitogenomes of nymphalid species. All three phylogenetic trees yielded the same topology. These results were consistent with those from previous studies of most major nymphalid groups, except those regarding tribe subdivision in certain subfamilies such as Argynnini + (Acraeini + Heliconiini) for Heliconiine. Furthermore, our analyses identified that the genus Cethosia was grouped with the genus Acraea composing the tribe Acraeini with strong support.

        Hepatocellular carcinoma prediction model performance decreases with long-term antiviral therapy in chronic hepatitis B patients

        Background/Aims: Existing hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) prediction models are derived mainly from pretreatment or early on-treatment parameters. We reassessed the dynamic changes in the performance of 17 HCC models in patients with chronic hepatitis B (CHB) during long-term antiviral therapy (AVT). Methods: Among 987 CHB patients administered long-term entecavir therapy, 660 patients had 8 years of follow-up data. Model scores were calculated using on-treatment values at 2.5, 3, 3.5, 4, 4.5, and 5 years of AVT to predict threeyear HCC occurrence. Model performance was assessed with the area under the receiver operating curve (AUROC). The original model cutoffs to distinguish different levels of HCC risk were evaluated by the log-rank test. Results: The AUROCs of the 17 HCC models varied from 0.51 to 0.78 when using on-treatment scores from years 2.5 to 5. Models with a cirrhosis variable showed numerically higher AUROCs (pooled at 0.65–0.73 for treated, untreated, or mixed treatment models) than models without (treated or mixed models: 0.61–0.68; untreated models: 0.51–0.59). Stratification into low, intermediate, and high-risk levels using the original cutoff values could no longer reflect the true HCC incidence using scores after 3.5 years of AVT for models without cirrhosis and after 4 years of AVT for models with cirrhosis. Conclusions: The performance of existing HCC prediction models, especially models without the cirrhosis variable, decreased in CHB patients on long-term AVT. The optimization of existing models or the development of novel models for better HCC prediction during long-term AVT is warranted.
