Computed tomographic analysis of maxillary sinus anatomy relevant to sinus lift procedures in edentulous ridges in Taiwanese patients

        Shun-Jen Yu,Yi-Hao Lee,Ching-Ping Lin,Aaron Yu-Jen Wu 대한치주과학회 2019 Journal of Periodontal & Implant Science Vol.49 No.4

Purpose: To analyze the maxillary sinus anatomy over edentulous ridges in the bilateral posterior maxillary area in Taiwanese patients using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). Methods: In total, 101 anatomical sites from 61 patients, including 32 premolar and 69 molar regions, were analyzed using CBCT. Measurements were made of the width and height of edentulous ridges, the thickness of the lateral wall of the maxillary sinus, and the presence of a sinus septum and the posterior superior alveolar artery (PSAA). A statistical analysis of the measurements was performed, and correlations among the measurements were assessed. Results: The average ridge width was 10.26±3.16 mm, with a significantly greater ridge width in the second molar region than in the premolar region. The mean residual ridge height was 8.55±4.09 mm, and ridge height showed an opposite trend from ridge width for the premolar and molar regions. A sinus septum was present at 5.9% of the sites, and the PSAA was observed in 24.5%. The average thickness of the lateral wall of the maxillary sinus was 2.08±0.94 mm, with no significant difference between the tooth position and lateral wall thickness. Conclusions: This study presents the anatomical features of the maxillary sinus, which should be considered in sinus lift procedures for implant placement, in the Taiwanese population. The use of CBCT is recommended to avoid intraoperative complications.

Character Formulae for Queer Lie Superalgebras and Canonical Bases of Types A/C

Cheng, Shun-Jen,Kwon, Jae-Hoon,Wang, Weiqiang Springer-Verlag 2017 Communications in mathematical physics Vol. No.

For the BGG category of -modules of half-integer weights, a Kazhdan-Lusztig conjecture A la Brundan is formulated in terms of categorical canonical basis of the nth tensor power of the natural representation of the quantum group of type C. For the BGG category of -modules of congruent non-integral weights, a Kazhdan-Lusztig conjecture is formulated in terms of canonical basis of a mixed tensor of the natural representation and its dual of the quantum group of type A. We also establish a character formula for the finite-dimensional irreducible -modules of half-integer weights in terms of type C canonical basis of the corresponding q-wedge space.

      • Irreducible characters of Kac–Moody Lie superalgebras

Cheng, Shun-Jen,Kwon, Jae-Hoon,Wang, Weiqiang Oxford University Press 2015 Proceedings of the London Mathematical Society Vol.110 No.1

Generalizing the super duality formalism for finite-dimensional Lie superalgebras of type ABCD, we establish an equivalence between parabolic Bernstein-Gelfand-Gelfand (BGG) categories of a Kac-Moody Lie superalgebra and a Kac-Moody Lie algebra. The characters for a large family of irreducible highest weight modules over a symmetrizable Kac-Moody Lie superalgebra are then given in terms of Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials for the first time. We formulate a notion of integrable modules over a symmetrizable Kac-Moody Lie superalgebra via super duality, and show that these integrable modules form a semisimple tensor subcategory, whose Littlewood-Richardson tensor product multiplicities coincide with those in the Kac-Moody Lie algebra setting.

        On Neural Fuzzy Systems

Shun-Feng Su,Jen-Wei Yeh 한국지능시스템학회 2014 INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL of FUZZY LOGIC and INTELLIGE Vol.14 No.4

Neural fuzzy system (NFS) is basically a fuzzy system that has been equipped with learning capability adapted from the learning idea used in neural networks. Due to their outstanding system modeling capability, NFS have been widely employed in various applications. In this article, we intend to discuss several ideas regarding the learning of NFS for modeling systems. The first issue discussed here is about structure learning techniques. Various ideas used in the literature are introduced and discussed. The second issue is about the use of recurrent networks in NFS to model dynamic systems. The discussion about the performance of such systems will be given. It can be found that such a delay feedback can only bring one order to the system not all possible order as claimed in the literature. Finally, the mechanisms and relative learning performance of with the use of the recursive least squares (RLS) algorithm are reported and discussed. The analyses will be on the effects of interactions among rules. Two kinds of systems are considered. They are the strict rules and generalized rules and have difference variances for membership functions. With those observations in our study, several suggestions regarding the use of the RLS algorithm in NFS are presented.

Progressive failure of metal–composite hybrid wheels under impact

        Shun-Fa Hwang,Hui-Lun Yu,Yu-Jen Liu,Yuder Chen,Shih-Chieh Chen,Yueh-Chih Hsieh 대한기계학회 2018 JOURNAL OF MECHANICAL SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY Vol.32 No.1

An 18-in hybrid wheel consisting of an aluminum alloy disk and a composite rim under 13° impact test is considered in this study. The rim is made of carbon fabric/polyurethane composites fabricated by resin transfer molding. Explicit finite element analysis with progressive failure function is used to investigate the failure situation of the hybrid wheel and the suitable braid angle of the braided composite. The effective elastic constants and strengths of the braided composites predicted by basic finite element analyses are adopted, whereas the true stress–strain curve of aluminum is used for the disk. Simulation results indicate that the aluminum alloy disk is safe after the impact test, whereas the rim is damaged. The volume of failed elements after impact simulation is selected as an indicator to obtain a quantity that can be used to represent the damage situation of the rim. Compared with the test results of a real hybrid wheel with [±30°] fiber angle in the rim, the hybrid wheel with fiber angle in the rim that is greater than [±30°] could pass the impact test.

Acupuncture-Related Rapid Dermal Spread of Breast Cancer: A Rare Case

        Hsin-Shun Tseng,Szu-Erh Chan,Shou-Jen Kuo,Dar-Ren Chen 한국유방암학회 2011 Journal of breast cancer Vol.14 No.4

Many ethnic Chinese patients seek second or adjuvant alternative therapies after breast cancer is diagnosed. Chinese herbs and acupuncture are the most popular methods in East Asia. We present a case of acupuncture manipulation-related cutaneous spread that no literature reported before. Post-acupuncture cutaneous spread was noted in a 54-year-old woman with left neck lymph node recurrence after complete surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy treatment. The results of chest computed tomography and skin biopsy showed the metastatic breast cancer in the dermis. Six courses of paclitaxel and gemcitabine followed by trastuzumab were given as therapeutic chemotherapy. The neck mass and cutaneous lesions subsided after 2 courses of chemotherapy. Direct puncture of a metastatic lymph node might increase the incidence of tumor spread on the skin. Therefore, despite the efficacy of complementary and alternative medicine, its safety and possible side effects should be more emphasized.

A fermentation strategy for production of recombinant protein subjected to plasmid instability

        Shu-Jen Chen,Bo-Shun Ke,I-Chung Chiu 한국화학공학회 2008 Korean Journal of Chemical Engineering Vol.25 No.5

The appearance of plasmid-losing cells in a recombinant Escherichia coli culture was observed when the cell mass became doubled after induction, which corresponded to the timing of cell fission. Accordingly, a two-stage fermentation strategy capable of maintaining plasmid stability without selective pressure in a recombinant E. coli culture was proposed. In the first stage (cell growth stage), a high cell density culture was obtained by incubating the cells in the R medium. In the second stage (producing stage), the cells were devoted to producing the recombinant protein by introducing the fresh LB medium supplemented with isopropyl-β-D-thiogalactopyranoside (IPTG). It was necessary to prevent the doubling in the cell mass after induction; otherwise cell fission would occur and generate plasmid-losing cells. The present strategy is expected to be extensively applicable in recombinant E. coli cultures
