        Sustained release of alginate hydrogel containing antimicrobial peptide Chol-37(F34-R) in vitro and its effect on wound healing in murine model of Pseudomonas aeruginosa infection

        Background: Antibiotic resistance is a significant public health concern around the globe. Antimicrobial peptides exhibit broad-spectrum and efficient antibacterial activity with an added advantage of low drug resistance. The higher water content and 3D network structure of the hydrogels are beneficial for maintaining antimicrobial peptide activity and help to prevent degradation. The antimicrobial peptide released from hydrogels also hasten the local wound healing by promoting epithelial tissue regeneration and granulation tissue formation. Objective: This study aimed at developing sodium alginate based hydrogel loaded with a novel antimicrobial peptide Chol-37(F34-R) and to investigate the characteristics in vitro and in vivo as an alternative antibacterial wound dressing to treat infectious wounds. Methods: Hydrogels were developed and optimized by varying the concentrations of crosslinkers and subjected to various characterization tests like cross-sectional morphology, swelling index, percent water contents, water retention ratio, drug release and antibacterial activity in vitro, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa infected wound mice model in vivo. Results: The results indicated that the hydrogel C proved superior in terms of cross-sectional morphology having uniformly sized interconnected pores, a good swelling index, with the capacity to retain a higher quantity of water. Furthermore, the optimized hydrogel has been found to exert a significant antimicrobial activity against bacteria and was also found to prevent bacterial infiltration into the wound site due to forming an impermeable barrier between the wound bed and external environment. The optimized hydrogel was found to significantly hasten skin regeneration in animal models when compared to other treatments in addition to strong inhibitory effect on the release of pro-inflammatory cytokines (interleukin-1β and tumor necrosis factor-α). Conclusions: Our results suggest that sodium alginate -based hydrogels loaded with Chol-37(F34-R) hold the potential to be used as an alternative to conventional antibiotics in treating infectious skin wounds.

        High-revenue Online Provisioning for Virtual Clusters in Multi-tenant Cloud Data Center Network

        The rapid development of cloud computing and high requirements of operators requires strong support from the underlying Data Center Networks. Therefore, the effectiveness of using resources in the data center networks becomes a point of concern for operators and material for research. In this paper, we discuss the online virtual-cluster provision problem for multiple tenants with an aim to decide when and where the virtual cluster should be placed in a data center network. Our objective is maximizing the total revenue for the data center networks under the constraints. In order to solve this problem, this paper divides it into two parts: online multi-tenancy scheduling and virtual cluster placement. The first part aims to determine the scheduling orders for the multiple tenants, and the second part aims to determine the locations of virtual machines. We first approach the problem by using the variational inequality model and discuss the existence of the optimal solution. After that, we prove that provisioning virtual clusters for a multi-tenant data center network that maximizes revenue is NP-hard. Due to the complexity of this problem, an efficient heuristic algorithm OMS (Online Multi-tenancy Scheduling) is proposed to solve the online multi-tenancy scheduling problem. We further explore the virtual cluster placement problem based on the OMS and propose a novel algorithm during the virtual machine placement. We evaluate our algorithms through a series of simulations, and the simulations results demonstrate that OMS can significantly increase the efficiency and total revenue for the data centers.

        Research status and development trend of three-dimensional colloidal crystals

        The three-dimensional colloidal crystal materials have unique optical properties and spatial structuredue to their ordered arrangement and have great potential to prepare three-dimensionally orderedmicroporous (3DOM) materials. This review outlines various methods for preparing three-dimensionalcolloidal crystals (3DCCs). The preparation methods of commonly used colloidal particles are introducedin detail, and the effects of different parameters on the assembly of 3DCCs are discussed. On this basis,using the colloidal crystal template (CCT) method to prepare 3DOM materials. After that, the commonstacking methods and defects of 3DCCs were analyzed. The latter part of this review discusses the mainapplications of 3DCCs, namely optical materials, adsorption materials, sensors, porous electrodematerials, inverse colloidal crystal (ICC) scaffolds, and other popular applications in recent years.

        CONFORMAL HEMI-SLANT SUBMERSION FROM KENMOTSU MANIFOLD

        As a generalization of conformal semi-invariant submersion, conformal slant submersion and conformal semi-slant submersion, in this paper we study conformal hemi-slant submersion from Kenmotsu manifold onto a Riemannian manifold. The necessary and sufficient conditions for the integrability and totally geodesicness of distributions are discussed. Moreover, we have obtained sufficient condition for a conformal hemi-slant submersion to be a homothetic map. The condition for a total manifold of the submersion to be twisted product is studied, followed by other decomposition theorems.

        For a pseudo-slant submanifold of a Kenmotsu manifold, we have worked out conditions in terms its canonical structure tensors, $T$ and $F$, and its shape operator so that it reduces to a warped product submanifold.

        A simple nonenzymatic glucose sensor based on coconut shell charcoal powder-coated nickel foil electrode

        In this work, a simple nonenzymatic glucose sensor has been proposed based on coconut shell charcoal (CSC) modifed nickel foil as working electrode in a three-electrode electrochemical cell. Charcoal was prepared by the pyrolysis of coconut shells. The most important advantages of coconut shells are cost-efectiveness and their abundance in nature. The morphology and phase of the CSC powder were characterized by scanning electron microscopy and X-ray difraction. The electrochemical performance of the CSC powder coated Nickel foil electrode was investigated by cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometry. The sensor shows a higher sensitivity of 2.992 mA cm−2 mM−1 in the linear range of 0.5–5.5 mM and slightly lower sensitivity of 1.1526 mA cm−2 mM−1 in the range of 7–18.5 mM glucose concentration with a detection limit of 0.2 mM. The anti-interference property of CSC powder also was investigated and found that the response of interfering species was less signifcant compared to glucose response. The proposed sensor ofers good sensitivity, wide linear range, and a very low response to interfering biomolecules.

        Mobile telephony, as a technology, has lent itself to varied uses. Mobile phones have been receiving constant reinvigoration and have advanced to a level where their technological features are ahead of audience demand. From being synonymous with voice calls and SMS, these gadgets, now, have impressive features built into them such as MP3, Camera, FM, MMS, GPRS, WAP-enabled phones, and Bluetooth technology. In brief, mobile phones can, at best, be described as a stripped-down version of the Internet. As the Internet finds its new expression in the form of e-learning, social scientists and instructional technology researchers are attempting to identify the applicability of mobile phones in educational domains. As most of the Internet features are ingrained in mobile phones, it is only legitimate to take initiatives in the direction of exploring if mobile phones could be used as an effective supplementary tool to facilitate learning. Although extensive studies have not been undertaken in this sphere, efforts are on to examine how a technology that was primarily designed for making calls could be extended for informal learning. This study reviews the scope of SMS texting as furtherance to conventional learning.

        New generalized inverse Weibull distribution for lifetime modeling

        This paper introduces the four parameter new generalized inverse Weibull distribution and investigates the potential usefulness of this model with application to reliability data from engineering studies. The new extended model has upside-down hazard rate function and provides an alternative to existing lifetime distributions. Various structural properties of the new distribution are derived that include explicit expressions for the moments, moment generating function, quantile function and the moments of order statistics. The estimation of model parameters are performed by the method of maximum likelihood and evaluate the performance of maximum likelihood estimation using simulation.

        Transmuted new generalized Weibull distribution for lifetime modeling

        The Weibull family of lifetime distributions play a fundamental role in reliability engineering and life testing problems. This paper investigates the potential usefulness of transmuted new generalized Weibull (TNGW) distribution for modeling lifetime data. This distribution is an important competitive model that contains twenty-three lifetime distributions as special cases. We can obtain the TNGW distribution using the quadratic rank transmutation map (QRTM) technique. We derive the analytical shapes of the density and hazard functions for graphical illustrations. In addition, we explore some mathematical properties of the TNGW model including expressions for the quantile function, moments, entropies, mean deviation, Bonferroni and Lorenz curves and the moments of order statistics. The method of maximum likelihood is used to estimate the model parameters. Finally the applicability of the TNGW model is presented using nicotine in cigarettes data for illustration.
