        Dehydroepiandrosterone Sulfate as a Risk Factor for Premature Myocardial Infarction: A Comparative Study

        Ba ckground: This study aimed to evaluate some of the major risk factors of myocardial infarction including dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate in patients with premature myocardial infarction (age <50 years old) and myocardial infarction (age ≥50 years). Me thods: This is a parallel case-control study on 50 premature myocardial infarction patients and 50 myocardial infarction patients. We also recruited 50 matched participants for each of the two groups. Patients and their control groups were assessed for dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate serum level, diabetes mellitus, hyperlipidemia, hypertriglyceridemia, and hypertension. In addition, family history of cardiovascular disease and current smoking was recorded. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were performed to evaluate predictors of premature myocardial infarction and myocardial infarction. Re sults: No significant differences were observed between the demographic data of patients and their controls. The dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate serum level was significantly higher in patients with premature myocardial infarction compared with controls. Multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed only serum dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate level to be significantly associated with premature myocardial infarction (odds ratio, 2.65; 95% confidence interval, 1.44 to 4.877; P = 0.002). Additionally, hypertension was found to be associated with myocardial infarction. Co nclusion: Higher levels of serum dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate level are associated with premature myocardial infarction but not with myocardial infarction, and this association is independent of the effects of other risk factors.

        Frequencies of Aggressive Behaviors in Win, Lose, and Tie Situations

        Results from previous studies on aggression-performance relationships in sport may have not been simply approved, since they have been based on the results of whole games and seasons. The present study examined scores of the games at the time aggressive behaviors occurred and compared their frequencies in three situations: when team was ahead (win), behind (loss), or equal (tie) in scores; both in girls and boys. The present paper argues that if there is any relationship between aggressive behavior and the results, it should be found when the aggressive behavior is taking place; meaning the end outcome of the game may not be a good indicator of the situation in which aggressive behavior occurs. All competitions in 2004 nation high schools championship (including 115 teams, 302 matches, and 1531 players in volleyball, basketball, handball, football, and futsal) were closely observed and their aggressive and assertive behaviors were recorded. Results indicated that both sex committed more goal aggressions in loss, win, and tie situations, respectively. It was also found that the frequencies of aggressive and assertive behavior were lower in tie situation, comparing to win/lose situation; and that girls showed less goal aggression than boys. The results were discussed in relation to their significance in the context of frustration-aggression hypothesis and showed that aggressive behaviors also occur to prevent losing.

        Comparing the Pattern of Menopausal Symptoms, Concern and Attitudes in Urban and Rural Postmenopausal Iranian Women

        Objectives: Although hormonal changes during menopause are inevitable in this period, the severity of the menopausal symptoms can be controlled. Accepting menopause and having a positive attitude toward it can also help. Given the results of previous studies, and since environmental factors affect the pattern of menopausal symptoms the present study was conducted to compare the pattern of menopausal symptoms, concern and attitudes in urban and rural postmenopausal women. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted on urban and rural postmenopausal women residing in and around Tabriz, Iran. Cluster sampling was used to select the subjects. The data collection tools used included a demographic questionnaire to assess women's experiences during menopause. Results: This study examined 544 urban and rural postmenopausal women between March and September 2015. The women had a mean age of 51.8 ± 3.1. After adjusting the basic variables, the mean scores of menopausal symptoms and their subscales showed significantly higher scores in the physical and psychological subscales in the urban women, while the rural women had significantly higher scores in the concern subscale. Conclusions: Rural women were significantly different from urban women in terms of menopausal symptoms, concern and attitudes. Hot flushes, a common menopausal symptom, and decreased sexual desire were more common in the urban women; in contrast, the rural women experienced more concern about menopause and its consequences.         Glutathione-responsive hydrogel and molecularly imprinted polymer nanospheres: New aspect on cisplatin delivery

        In this study, Glutathione-responsive hydrogel, MIPs and their related NIPs were synthesized byprecipitation polymerization method. Effect of HEMA/MAA and EGDMA/TRIM as functional monomerand crosslinking agents on size, morphology, drug loading and releasing were studied. BACy as a disulfidecross-linking agent was used in praparation of Glutathione-responsive hydrogel. The size andmorphology of MIPs and NIPs were examined by FE-SEM technique. Results showed EGDMAsynthesizedMIPs had the smaller size than TRIM-prepared MIPs. In order to measure the capacity of MIPsor NIPs for binding to cisplatin, static and dynamic adsorption experiments were done. The amounts ofcisplatin were measured by HPLC method. The binding capacity of drug by MIPs is observed to be higherthan NIPs. The EGDMA-synthesized polymers showed a high percentage of adsorption. NIPs weresaturated much sooner than MIPs. In vitro release assays of cisplatin were done in PBS at pH = 7.4 andtemperature of 37 C. The results showed that increase of the amount of GSH cause to increase release ofthe drug from hydrogel.

        Evaluation of dose distribution from 12C ion in radiation therapy by FLUKA code

        Heavy ions have a high potential for destroying deep tumors that carry the highest dose at the peak of Bragg. The peak caused by a single-energy carbon beam is too narrow, which requires special measures for improvement. Here, carbon-12 (12C) ion with different energies has been used as a source for calculating the dose distribution in the water phantom, soft tissue and bone by the code of Monte Carlo-based FLUKA code. By increasing the energy of the initial beam, the amount of absorbed dose at Bragg peak in all three targets decreased, but the trend for this reduction was less severe in bone. While the maximum absorbed dose per bone-mass unit in energy of 200 MeV/u was about 30% less than the maximum absorbed dose per unit mass of water or soft tissue, it was merely 2.4% less than soft tissue in 400 MeV/u. The simulation result showed a good agreement with experimental data at GSI Darmstadt facility of biophysics group by 0.15 cm average accuracy in Bragg peak positioning. From 200 to 400 MeV/u incident energy, the Bragg peak location increased about 18 cm in soft tissue. Correspondingly, the bone and soft tissue revealed a reduction dose ratio by 2.9 and 1.9. Induced neutrons did not contribute more than 1.8% to the total energy deposited in the water phantom. Also during 12C ion bombardment, secondary fragments showed 76% and 24% of primary 200 and 400 MeV/u, respectively, were present at the Bragg-peak position. The combined treatment of carbon ions with neutron or electron beams may be more effective in local dose delivery and also treating malignant tumors.

        Life table parameters of Plodia interpunctella (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) on four commercial pistachio cultivars

        Life table parameters of Indianmeal moth, Plodia interpunctella (Hübner) (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae), on four pistachiocultivars (Akbari, Ahmad-Aghaii, Fandoghi and Kalehghouchi) were studied in laboratory at 28 ± 0.5 °C,50 ± 5% RH and a photoperiod of 16:8 h (L:D). The larvae successfully developed on all cultivars. The shortestand longest larval periods were recorded on Akbari and Kalehghouchi, respectively. The fecundity of femalesvaried from 109.19 to 157.81 eggs on Kalehghouchi and Akbari, respectively. The adult longevity varied from6.19 to 6.75 days on Fandoghi and Akbari, respectively. The intrinsic rate of increase (rm) ranged from 0.0961to 0.1382 (female/female/day) on Kalehghouchi and Akbari, respectively. The mean generation time (T) wasfound 35.67 to 31.83 days on Kalehghouchi and Akbari, respectively. The Kalehghouchi cultivarwas less suitable,and the Akbari cultivar was the most suitable host for P. interpunctella in comparison with other cultivars. Theseresults provide important information on population growth potential of P. interpunctella on four commercialpistachio cultivars.
