Rethinking Engagement on the Korean Peninsula: Confidence to Trust to Peace

In the aftermath of the sinking of the South Korean naval vessel Cheonan, inter-Korean relations are at possibly the lowest point in decades. With rising tensions, increasing propaganda and threatening military posturing on both sides of the border, the prospect of peace on the Korean peninsula in the near future is dim. In particular, the cessation of most inter-Korean economic cooperation threatens stability, and could have long-term implications. Now is the time for South Korea, the United States, and other concerned parties to re-evaluate the objectives and means of their policies toward North Korea. Abandonment of North Korean nuclear weapons and weapons programs is an important but long-term goal. Now, it is necessary to economically engage North Korea in order to lay the groundwork for confidence-building, trust-building, and ultimately, a peace regime that will contribute to unification efforts. By encouraging private-sector, market-driven foreign investment into joint ventures and infrastructure projects, we can engage, rebuild, and educate North Korea. By avoiding government assistance programs, we can avoid politization of the projects, and let market economics encourage North Korea to move toward becoming a reasonable, stable and transparent member of the international community.
Learners’ Responses to a Virtual Cadaver Dissection Nerve Course in the COVID Era: A Survey Study

Background Virtual education is an evolving method for teaching medical learners. During the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic, remote learning has provided a replacement for conferences, lectures, and meetings, but has not been described as a method for conducting a cadaver dissection. We aim to demonstrate how learners perceive a virtual cadaver dissection as an alternative to live dissection. Methods A virtual cadaver dissection was performed to demonstrate several upper extremity nerve procedures. These procedures were livestreamed as part of an educational event with multimedia and interactive audience questions. Participants were queried both during and after the session regarding their perceptions of this teaching modality. Results Attendance of a virtual dissection held for three plastic surgery training institutions began at 100 and finished with 70 participants. Intrasession response rates from the audience varied between 68 and 75%, of which 75% strongly agreed that they were satisfied with the virtual environment. The audience strongly agreed or agreed that the addition ofmultimedia captions (88%), magnified video loupe views (82%), and split-screen multicast view (64%) was beneficial. Postsession response rate was 27%, and generally reflected a positive perspective about the content of the session. Conclusions Virtual cadaver dissection is an effective modality for teaching surgical procedures and can be enhanced through technologies such as video loupes and multiple camera perspectives. The audience viewed the virtual cadaver dissection as a beneficial adjunct to surgical education. This format may also make in-person cadaver coursesmore effective by improving visualization and allowing for anatomic references to be displayed synchronously.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Src family kinases (SFKs) are a family of protein tyrosine kinases containing nine members: Src, Lyn, Fgr, Hck, Lck, Fyn, Blk, Yes, and Ylk. Although SFK activation is a major immediate signaling event in LPS/Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) signaling, its precise role has remained elusive due to various contradictory results obtained from a certain SFK member-deficient mice or cells. The observed inconsistencies may be due to the compensation or redundancy by other SFKs upon a SFK deficiency. The chemical rescuing approach was suggested to induce temporal and precise SFK activation in living cells, thereby limiting the chance of cellular adaption to a SFK-deficient condition.</P> <P>Using the rescuing approach, we demonstrate that restoring SFK activity not only induces tyrosine phosphorylation of TLR4, but also inhibits LPS-induced NFκB and JNK1/2 activation and consequently suppresses LPS-induced cytokine production. TLR4 normally recruits TIR domain-containing adaptors in response to LPS, however, temporally restored SFK activation disrupts the LPS-induced association of MyD88 and Mal/Tirap with TLR4. Additionally, using kinase-dead SFK-Lyn (Y397/508F) and constitutively active SFK-Lyn (Y508F), we found that the kinase-dead SFK inhibits TLR4 tyrosine phosphorylation with reduced binding affinity to TLR4, while the kinase-active SFK strongly binds to TLR4 and promotes TLR4 tyrosine phosphorylation, suggesting that SFK kinase activity is required for TLR4 tyrosine phosphorylation and TLR4-SFK interaction.</P> <P>Together, our results demonstrate that SFK activation induces TLR4 tyrosine phosphorylation, consequently dissociating MyD88 and Mal/Tirap from TLR4 and inhibiting LPS-induced inflammatory responses, suggesting a negative feedback loop regulated by SFK-induced tyrosine phosphorylation in TLR4.</P> <P><B>Graphical abstract</B></P> <P>[DISPLAY OMISSION]</P>
