Melatonin Protects Human Adipose-Derived Stem Cells from Oxidative Stress and Cell Death

        Shaun S. Tan,Xiaolian Han,Priyadharshini Sivakumaran,,Shiang Y. Lim,Wayne A. Morrison 대한성형외과학회 2016 Archives of Plastic Surgery Vol.43 No.3

Background Adipose-derived stem cells (ASCs) have applications in regenerative medicine based on their therapeutic potential to repair and regenerate diseased and damaged tissue. They are commonly subject to oxidative stress during harvest and transplantation, which has detrimental effects on their subsequent viability. By functioning as an antioxidant against free radicals, melatonin may exert cytoprotective effects on ASCs. Methods We cultured human ASCs in the presence of varying dosages of hydrogen peroxide and/or melatonin for a period of 3 hours. Cell viability and apoptosis were determined with propidium iodide and Hoechst 33342 staining under fluorescence microscopy. Results Hydrogen peroxide (1–2.5 mM) treatment resulted in an incremental increase in cell death. 2 mM hydrogen peroxide was thereafter selected as the dose for co-treatment with melatonin. Melatonin alone had no adverse effects on ASCs. Co-treatment of ASCs with melatonin in the presence of hydrogen peroxide protected ASCs from cell death in a dose-dependent manner, and afforded maximal protection at 100 μM (n=4, one-way analysis of variance P<0.001). Melatonin co-treated ASCs displayed significantly fewer apoptotic cells, as demonstrated by condensed and fragmented nuclei under fluorescence microscopy. Conclusions Melatonin possesses cytoprotective properties against oxidative stress in human ASCs and might be a useful adjunct in fat grafting and cell-assisted lipotransfer.

Neutron and gamma-ray energy reconstruction for characterization of special nuclear material

        Shaun D. Clarke,Michael C. Hamel,Angela Di fulvio,Sara A. Pozzi 한국원자력학회 2017 Nuclear Engineering and Technology Vol.49 No.6

Characterization of special nuclear material may be performed using energy spectroscopy of either theneutron or gamma-ray emissions from the sample. Gamma-ray spectroscopy can be performed relativelyeasily using high-resolution semiconductors such as high-purity germanium. Neutron spectroscopy, bycontrast, is a complex inverse problem. Here, results are presented for 252Cf and PuBe energy spectraunfolded using a single EJ309 organic scintillator; excellent agreement is observed with the referencespectra. Neutron energy spectroscopy is also possible using a two-plane detector array, whereby time-offlightkinematics can be used. With this system, energy spectra can also be obtained as a function ofposition. Spatial-dependent energy spectra are presented for neutron and gamma-ray sources that are inexcellent agreement with expectations.

Engagement With Automated Writing Feedback in Mandated vs. Voluntary Conditions

        Shaun J. Manning,조수경 현대영어교육학회 2019 현대영어교육 Vol.20 No.4

This study investigates student engagement with Écree, a Natural Language Processing (NLP) based automated writing evaluation (AWE) that gives feedback on content. In particular, this study examines how mandating AWE use or not, affects students’ behavioral and emotional engagement with AWE feedback. Two classes—one in which Écree use was mandatory (EM) and another in which it was optional (EO)—were surveyed and four volunteers from each class were tracked. Overall, the two groups differed in their evaluations of how much they incorporated AWE feedback into revisions as well as in the number of uploads to Écree. Tracking the focal students’ written drafts, Écree feedback, and interview data revealed that students from EM tended to incorporate Écree’s feedback into their revisions more than EO students. Unexpectedly, EM students developed quite negative views toward Écree, whereas EO students often referred to its usefulness: its systematicity, speed, and role as a reader. This study implies that AWE can be utilized as a supplemental tool in higher education and that students may well need training so as to maximize its positive effects.

        Japanese Confucianism and War

        Shaun O’Dwyer 성균관대학교 유교문화연구소 2022 儒敎文化硏究(中文版) Vol.- No.38

It is a widely held belief that State Shinto was the main indigenous ideological driver of Japan’s descent into ultranationalism and war in the 1930s. However, much less is known today of Japanese Confucian justifications for war in the same era. This article joins a small group of other studies researching a now little-known educational and research association formed in 1918 by Japanese Confucian scholars and Sinologists, the Shibunkai (斯文会) which reached the peak of its influence and patronage from Japan’s political elite in the 1930’s. This article reviews the Shibunkai’s early efforts to revive traditional Confucian morality and promote Chinese learning, its pursuit of “Confucian Diplomacy” with the Kong family estate at Qufu in Shandong Province, and its elaboration of a Confucian Pan-Asian doctrine that accorded Japan, with its supposed purified version of Confucianism, the role of leader and guardian of East Asia’s spiritual and moral culture. Last, this article analyses some of the seldom-studied war-era literature produced by Shibunkai scholars to argue that a modern Japanese “Imperial Way” Confucianism played a role in the moral legitimation of Japan’s war against China in 1937-1945. Based on its analysis of the Occidentalism and self-Orientalism in the Shibunkai’s wartime publications, the article concludes that there is a need for more critical reflection on Occidentalist and self-Orientalist trends in Confucian normative theorizing amidst the troubled geopolitical conditions of East Asia today.

Reflections on “Statistical Power and Structural Equation Models in Business Research”

        Shaun McQuitty 한국마케팅과학회 2018 마케팅과학연구 Vol.28 No.3

This article reflects on McQuitty’s 2004 paper, which describes the importance of statistical power for hypothesis testing and, more specifically, the evaluation of structural equation models (SEMs). McQuitty also explains the use of what was at the time a new method developed by MacCallum, Browne, and Sugawara for estimating the power associated with the RMSEA fit statistic, and then applies the method to SEMs used in marketing journals. A sizeable portion of the published models had too little power to reject false models (a Type II error) or too much power, which leads to the over rejection of correct models (a Type I error). A brief discussion of the impact of McQuitty and ongoing research of power for SEMs follows.

The Idea of an “Asian Monetary Fund”: The Problems of Financial Institutionalism in the Asia-Pacific

Shaun Narine 경남대학교 극동문제연구소 2003 ASIAN PERSPECTIVE Vol.27 No.2

Asian observers attribute the Asian economic crisis of 1997-1999 to the instability inherent in the global financial system. In response, Asians have discussed creating an Asian Monetary Fund (AMF) to manage future financial crises and have demanded the reform of the global financial architecture. However, the New International Financial Architecture (NIFA) developed since the crisis fails to address the fundamental sources of instability in the present global financial system. This system poses economic and ideological threats to the stability of East Asia. Therefore, regional states have powerful incentives to create an effective AMF. However, traditional security concerns, historical grievances, and political rivalries between the major Asia-Pacific powers limit the prospects of regional cooperation. Under these conditions, it is unlikely that East Asian states can create an effective regional financial institution. However, Asian states still need to protect themselves from global financial volatility. They will probably pursue this goal through bilateral and multilateral arrangements with the regional powers. The Asia-Pacific will maintain a distinctive East Asian political economy.

Divided but Not Poles Apart: Europe, the United States, and the Rise of China

Shaun Breslin 경남대학교 극동문제연구소 2021 ASIAN PERSPECTIVE Vol.Special No.-

While differences remain, the gap between US and European debates over the likely impact of China’s rise on the global order has narrowed in recent years. At the same time, China’s leaders have been more confident in establishing dichotomized distinctions between their view of how the world should be ordered and how China will act as a great power on one hand, and what they depict as the West’s preferences and the typical modus operandi of Western powers on the other. Despite evidence of ever clearer dividing lines between different visions of China’s impact on the future of the global order, thiss is not the same as a return to bipolarity. The problems of disentangling transnational economic relations, different levels of followership for potential leaders, and pragmatic considerations of governance efficacy in diverse issue areas all suggest something other than fixed bloc-type alliances on either side of a bipolar divide.
