        More than popularity matters : How would voters like to get social networking with candidates?

        An online survey was conducted to assess motivations for using, reliance on, and perceived credibility of political blogs and microblogs during both the Taiwanese general election of 2009 (the blog epoch) and the presidential elections of 2012 (the microblog epoch). Results indicated higher reliance on and motivation for using political blogs than microblogs. Blogs were also perceived to be more credible than microblogs. Respondents who primarily engaged in blogging for information purposes were more likely to judge candidate blogs as highly credible, whereas interest in entertainment emerged as the strongest predictor of the perceived credibility of microblogs. This research also provided quantitative evidence showing how users viewed blogs and microblogs differently in the context of political campaigns. The aim is to explore the pros and cons of blogging and microblogging as a tool for political communication.

      • Design of a Bidirectional DC/AC Converter with Battery Charging/Discharging/Standing Balance Control

        Battery cells connected in series have been widely used in high-voltage and high-power applications. In this paper, a single-phase battery energy storage system with battery balance charging, battery balance discharging, and power factor correction capabilities was developed. A prototype suitable for a single-phase 110V power supply was designed and implemented for verification. To verify its performance, three 48V/7Ah battery modules were used as normal batteries, and a 48V/5Ah battery module was used as a retired battery. The experimental results showed that the battery energy storage system has excellent battery balancing capability. Compared with that of the conventional system without balanced control, the balancing performance of the proposed system is increased by about 15.25% and 26.92%, respectively, when the system was operated in the converter and rectifier modes. In addition, the proposed system also had battery fault tolerance, and was compatible with recycled batteries and an independent power supply.

        Evaluation of the composition and fumigant toxicity against Plodia interpunctella of essential oils from Ajania potaninii and Ajania fruticulosa

        Indian meal moth, Plodia interpunctella (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae), is a worldwide omnivorous pest. It is the pri mary insect pest in many economically important stored crops. The insecticidal activity of essential oils (EOs) extracted from Ajania potaninii and Ajania fruticulosa were evaluated against Plodia interpunctella. EOs obtained by hydro-distillation were analyzed by GC–MS. Fumigant toxicity testing indicated that both EOs and their main components were toxic to P. interpunctella adults. 1,8-Cineole exhibited the strongest activity, having an LC 50 of 0.86 mg/L air and being twice as active as camphor. Myrtenol was also strongly toxic to P. interpunctella adults (LC 50 0.99 mg/L air), while camphor, verbenol, borneol, and the two complete EOs exhibited lower toxicity. None of the EOs or main components exhibited significant toxicity against the larvae of P. interpunctella. This study provides evidence of the individual active substances accounting for the insecticidal activity of EOs from A. potaninii and A. fruticulosa. These EOs have potential as biological insecticides for controlling insect pest damage in stored crops.

        Synthesis of Cd<sub>1-x</sub>Zn<sub>x</sub>S/K<sub>4</sub>Nb<sub>6</sub>O<sub>17</sub> Composite and its Photocatalytic Activity for Hydrogen Production

        $Cd_{1-x}Zn_xS$-sensitized $K_4Nb_6O_{17}$ composite photocatalysts (designated $Cd_{1-x}Zn_xS/K_4Nb_6O_{17}$) were prepared via a simple deposition-precipitation method. The samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDS), $N_2$ sorption, ultraviolet-visible light diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UV-Vis DRS), photoluminescence measurements (PL), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The $Cd_{0.8}Zn_{0.2}S$ particles were scattered on the surface of $K_4Nb_6O_{17}$, and had a relatively uniform size distribution around 50 nm. The absorption edge of $K_4Nb_6O_{17}$ was shifted to the visible light region and the recombination of photo-generated electrons and holes suppressed after $Cd_{0.8}Zn_{0.2}S$ loading. The $Cd_{0.8}Zn_{0.2}S$(25 wt %)/$K_4Nb_6O_{17}$ composite possessed the highest photocatalytic activity for hydrogen production under visible light irradiation, evolving 8.278 mmol/g in 3 h. Recyclability tests were performed, and the composite photocatalysts were found to be fairly stable. The mechanism of charge separation between the photogenerated electrons and holes at the $Cd_{0.8}Zn_{0.2}S/K_4Nb_6O_{17}$ composite was discussed.

        <P>Electronic bipolar resistance switching (eBRS) in an Al/TiOx/Al structure, where the TiOx layer was reactively sputter-deposited, was examined in conjunction with a structural analysis using transmission electron microscopy. A thin (3-5 nm) insulating Al(Ti)O-x layer was formed at the bottom Al electrode interface, which provided the necessary asymmetric potential barrier for the eBRS to emerge, whereas the top Al electrode interface appeared to have provided the fluent carrier (electron) injection. The set and reset switching were related to the trapping and detrapping of the carriers at the trap centers, the characteristic energy of which was similar to 0.86 eV, across the entire electrode area. The general features of this material system as the feasible RS memory were insufficient: endurance cycle, <similar to 8000, and retention time at 85 degrees C, 10(6) s. However, the detailed analysis of the switching behavior based on the space-charge limited current conduction mechanism, and its variation with the switching cycles, provided useful information on the general features of the eBRS, which could also be applicable to other binary (or even ternary) metal-oxide RS systems based on the electronic switching mechanism.</P>

        An Improved Mesh Simplification Algorithm Based on Quadric Error Metrics

        Objective: Quadric Error Metrics (QEM) algorithm can simplify complex 3D models. However, for its simple error metrics, QEM is not suitable to simplify medical model that contains many minute detail features. We need to develop a new algorithm because we are often interested in these features. Methods: Based on QEM, We classify the vertex into seven classes. Different class has different cost of collapse. In our algorithm, collapse usually occurs with the lowest cost during simplification, thus minute feature can be preserved as possible. We also introduce the average of correlative triangles' area to estimate the volume change during the simplification. Results: We test our algorithm on several complex medical models and find that our improved algorithm is effective and fast. Conclusion: To simplify a complex medical model, we want to preserve the minute feature during simplification. By classifying the vertexes, we develop an improved algorithm based on QEM. The testing results shows that our algorithm not only maintains the high efficiency of QEM algorithm, but also meets the high requirements of medical image processing on fidelity and mesh quality.         Preparation and in vitro/in vivo characterization of tranilast-AMP clay complex for improving drug dissolution and bioavailability

        The present study aimed to develop an effectiveoral formulation of tranilast (TL), a poorly solubleanti-inflammatory drug, via the formation of drug complexwith 3-aminopropyl functionalized magnesium phyllosilicate(AMP clay) and improve the pH-dependent drug dissolutionand bioavailability of TL. The drug-clay complex(TL-AMP complex) was prepared by co-precipitationmethod and its structural properties were characterized byX-ray powder diffraction, Fourier transform infraredspectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy. Thedissolution profiles of TL-AMP complex were evaluated atdifferent pHs. The formation of TL-AMP complex significantlyimproved the dissolution rate as well as the extentof drug release at acidic pHs, while the dissolution ofuntreated TL was negligible at pH 1.2 and 4.0. TL-AMPcomplex also achieved faster drug release than untreateddrug (about 90 vs 30 % within 30 min) at pH 6.8. Afteroral administration to rats, TL-AMP complex enhancedsignificantly (p\0.05) oral drug exposure and increasedCmax and AUC by six- and threefolds, respectively, comparedto untreated TL. In conclusion, TL-AMP complexmay be promising to improve the pH-dependent dissolutionas well as bioavailability of TL.

        Outage Probability of Device-to-Device MIMO Relay Systems with Imperfect Channel Estimation

        Under an imperfect channel estimation, a Device-to-Device (D2D) communication framework based on MIMO relay technology is presented. The model consists of a D2D pair equipped with M antennas and a relay equipped with N antennas as well as a cellular user equipped with M antennas. The outage probability under different relaying protocols (i.e. AF and DF protocol) with and without considering a direct link was derived. The actual and theoretical outage probability of the five links under different antenna numbers was emulated. The number of user antennas and channel estimation error was analyzed carefully to determine their impact on the outage probability of a system. The simulation verified the theory analyses and the results showed that MIMO relaying improves the D2D communication system performance.
