Investigation of the Relationship Between Cognitive Functions and Retinal Findings From Spectral Optical Coherence Tomography in Patients With Schizophrenia and Their Healthy Siblings

        Rümeysa Taşdelen(Rümeysa Taşdelen ),Batuhan Ayık(Batuhan Ayık ),Hatice Kaya(Hatice Kaya ),Neslihan Sevimli(Neslihan Sevimli ) 대한신경정신의학회 2023 PSYCHIATRY INVESTIGATION Vol.20 No.3

Objective Retinal structural changes which were investigated by optical coherence tomography (OCT) have been reported in schizophrenia. Since cognitive dysfunction is a core feature of schizophrenia, the correlations between retinal findings and cognitive functions of patients and their healthy siblings may provide insight into the pathophysiological processes of the disorder. We aimed to investigate the relationship between neuropsychiatric tests and retinal changes in schizophrenia patients and their healthy siblings. Methods We measured OCT parameters and cognitive performance (via Trail Making Tests, verbal fluency tests, and The Digit Span Tests) of 72 participants (36 patients with schizophrenia and 36 healthy siblings) and disease severity (with Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale, Global Assessment of Functioning, and Clinical Global Impression scales) in patients with schizophrenia and evaluated the relationship between retinal findings and clinical parameters, especially neurocognitive tests. Results We found decreased ganglion cell layer-inner plexiform layer thickness and macular volume in the patient group. There were strong correlations between neurocognitive tests and OCT findings in both groups. On the other hand, there was not any correlation between retinal findings and disease parameters. Conclusion The cognitive symptoms of schizophrenia may be more closely related to structural changes in the retina.

Electrocoagulation of Disperse Dyebath Wastewater: Optimization of Process Variables and Sludge Production

Aygun, Ahmet,Nas, Bilgehan,Sevimli, Mehmet Faik The Korean Electrochemical Society 2021 Journal of electrochemical science and technology Vol.12 No.1

This study was conducted to investigate the effect of initial pH, current density, and electrolysis time on process performance in terms of decolorization and chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal from disperse dyebath wastewater (DDW) by mono-polar parallel laboratory scale electrocoagulation (EC) process. COD reduction of 51.3% and decolorization of 92.8% were obtained with operating cost of 0.19 €/㎥ treated wastewater for Al-Al electrode pair, while 90.5% of decolorization and 49.2% of COD reduction were obtained with operating cost of 0.20 €/㎥ treated wastewater for an Fe-Fe electrode pair. The amount of sludge production were highly related to type of the electrode materials. At the optimum conditions, the amount of sludge produced were 0.18 kg/㎥ and 0.28 kg/㎥ for Al-Al and Fe-Fe electrode pairs, respectively. High decolorization can be explained by the hydrophobic nature of the disperse dye, while limited COD removal was observed due to the high dissolved organic matter of the DDW based on auxiliary chemicals. Energy, electrode, and chemical consumptions and sludge handling were considered as major cost items to find a cost-effective and sustainable solution for EC. The contribution of each cost items on operating cost were determined as 10.0%, 51.1%, 30.5% and 8.4% for Al-Al, and they were also determined as 9.0%, 38.0%, 40.5% and 12.5% for Fe-Fe, respectively. COD reduction and decolorization were fitted to first-order kinetic rule.

Synergistic effects of sono-alkaline pretreatment on anaerobic biodegradability of waste activated sludge

Serkan Sahinkaya,Mehmet Faik Sevimli 한국공업화학회 2013 Journal of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Vol.19 No.1

The individual and combined effects of alkaline and ultrasonic pretreatment on both physical and chemical properties and anaerobic biodegradability of waste activated sludge (WAS) were investigated comprehensively in this study. The experimental results showed that both disintegration and anaerobic biodegradability of WAS were significantly improved by the combination of alkaline and ultrasonic (sono-alkaline) pretreatment. Besides, it was determined that the hydraulic retention time in anaerobic digester can be shortened by half using this combined pretreatment. However, it was also determined that sono-alkaline pretreatment was not feasible economically due to its high energy requirement.

Treatment of reactive dyebath wastewater by electrocoagulation process: Optimization and cost-estimation

Ahmet Aygun,Bilgehan Nas,Mehmet Faik Sevimli 한국화학공학회 2019 Korean Journal of Chemical Engineering Vol.36 No.9

Reactive dyestuff is commonly used in the textile industry. Reactive dyebath wastewater (RDW) was treated with a batch, monopolar, parallel lab scale electrocoagulation process (EC) having 0.042m2 effective electrode area. The effects of process parameters, such as initial pH, current density and electrolysis period on COD and color removal efficiency, were investigated by using response surface methodology (RSM). At the optimal conditions, 85.8% color and 76.9% COD removal were obtained with 1.84 €/m3 operating cost for Al electrode, while 92.0% decolorization and 80.9% COD removal were obtained with 1.56 €/m3 operating cost for an iron electrode. The iron electrode was found superior to aluminum as a sacrificial anode material in terms of COD and color removal with low cost. The cost of electrical energy, electrode, and chemical consumptions for electrocoagulation were considered to find an optimum and feasible solution. As a result, the operating cost consists of approximately 2% for energy, 28% for electrode and 70% for chemical consumption for both electrodes. Based upon the data, it is clearly seen that operating cost covers mostly for HCI to adjust pH due to the high pH and alkalinity of RDW, which was neglected in many studies. The first-order reaction kinetics with a higher slope for the color were well fitted, resulting in faster color removal than that of COD for both electrodes.

Observations and experiences of pediatric surgeons working on the field in the first 7 days of the Kahramanmaras earthquake

        Alparslan Kapisiz,Cem Kaya,Sibel Eryılmaz,Abdurrahman Azzam,Asli Sevimli,Ramazan Karabulut,Zafer Turkyilmaz,Kaan Sonmez 대한외과학회 2023 Annals of Surgical Treatment and Research(ASRT) Vol.105 No.2

Purpose: This study aims to share our experiences and problems, and to suggest solutions as pediatric surgeons who took part in the teams that went voluntarily to the region hit by the Kahramanmaraş earthquake during the first 7 days after the disaster. Methods: This study conveys our observations made at Kahramanmaraş Sütçüimam University Faculty of Medicine Hospital, where we worked as a volunteer team between February 7 and 14, 2023. Results: During the first few days, there were registration problems due to lack of electricity, water, and internet, as well as issues with sterile surgical environments. In the following days, a lack of auxiliary health personnel was revealed as the main difficulty. Conclusion: Since coordination is important when working as a team in the aftermath of an earthquake, staff from the same center should be deployed together if possible, and a team leader should be selected. Alternative recording systems should be established in case of power outages and computer problems. Secretaries, auxiliary health staff, and technicians should be included in the team in addition to doctors and nurses.

Assesment of Myocardial Ischemia by Combination of Tissue Synchronisation Imaging and Dobutamine Stress Echocardiography

        Muhammed Hakan Tas,Enbiya Aksakal,Yekta Gurlertop,Ziya Simsek,Fuat Gundogdu,Serdar Sevimli,Eftal Murat Bakirci,Sule Karakelleoglu 대한심장학회 2013 Korean Circulation Journal Vol.43 No.6

Background and Objectives: Dobutamine stress echocardiography (DSE) is an important non-invasive imaging method for evaluating ischemia. However, wall motion interpretation can be impaired by the experience level of the interpreter and the subjectivity of the visual assessment. In our study we aimed to combine DSE and tissue syncronisation imaging to increase sensitivity for detecting ischemia. Subjects and Methods: 50 patients with indications for DSE were included in the study. In 25 patients we found DSE positive for isch-emia and in the other 25 patients we found it to be negative. The negative group was accepted as the control group. There was no signifi-cant difference in terms of risk factors and echocardiographic parameters between the two groups, except for wall motion scores. In both groups, left ventricular dyssychrony was accepted as the difference between time to peak systolic velocity (Ts) in the reciprocal four cou-ple of non-apical segments at rest and during peak stress. Timings were corrected for heart rate. We compared the differences of the dys-synchronisation value at rest and during peak stress to determine the distinctions within the groups and between the groups of DSE pos-itive and negative patients. Results: We found that stress and ischemia did not create any significant difference over the left intraventricular dyssynchrony with DSE,although at the segmenter level it prolonged the time to peak systolic velocity (p<0.05). These alterations did not show any significant difference between positive and negative DSE groups. Conclusion: As a result, this segmenter dyssynchrony and the time to peak systolic velocity, which is corrected for heart rate, did not en-hance any new value over DSE for detecting ischemia.

Anticancer activities of bioactive peptides derived from rice husk both in free and encapsulated form in chitosan

        Esra Ilhan-Ayisigi,Gozde Budak,Melih Soner Celiktas,Canan Sevimli-Gur,Ozlem Yesil-Celiktas 한국공업화학회 2021 Journal of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Vol.103 No.-

Cereal grain-derived protein hydrolysates exert beneficial effects for human health, thus utilization of byproductswith high protein content has drawn attention. In this study, hot water extraction of rice huskhas been optimized to obtain protein hydrolysate with the highest anticancer activity. The optimum proteinvalue was obtained as 2.40 g/L corresponding to 43.2 g protein/kg dried rice husk under the conditionsof 60 C, 2.0 mL/min flow rate and pH 10.0. The protein hydrolysate was encapsulated with chitosan, where the mean particle size of protein hydrolysate (0.3 %) loaded chitosan nanoparticles was 256.4 ± 33. 4 nm with 89 % encapsulation efficiency and a 65% release at the end of 6 days. Cytotoxicity assaysshowed that the lowest cell viabilities have been achieved with A549 and MCF7 cells with IC50 valuesof 1.98 and 3.58 mg/mL, respectively, whereas nuclear fragmentation and apoptotic bodies were observedthrough Hoechst 33342 staining. The cytotoxic effect might be associated with the wide variety of peptide/protein subunits ranging from 10 kDa to more than 180 kDa in the protein hydrolysate of rice husk.

Water Length and Height Effects on the Earthquake Behavior of Arch Dam-Reservoir-Foundation Systems

        Baris¸ Sevim,Ahmet Can Altuns¸ik,Alemdar Bayraktar,Mehmet Akköse,Yusuf Calayir 대한토목학회 2011 KSCE Journal of Civil Engineering Vol.15 No.2

In this study, water length and height effects on the earthquake behavior of arch dam-reservoir-foundation systems are purposed. The study can be classified into two parts. In the first part, in order to obtain a realistic 3D arch dam-reservoir-foundation model, water length effects on the behavior of the arch dam systems are investigated. For this purpose a double curvature arch dam is modeled by forming four different water lengths related to dam Height (H) as H, 2H, 3H and 4H. Each model is analyzed in time domain and the realistic model is obtained according to the analyses results. In the second part, water height effects on the behavior of the arch dam system are investigated. The arch dam obtained from first part of the study is modeled by forming four different water heights related to dam Height (H) as 0H, 0.33H, 0.66H and H. The behavior of the dam, reservoir and foundation are expressed in terms of displacements using Lagrangian approach. The foundation is taken into account as massless; behavior of reservoir is assumed to be linearly elastic, inviscid and irrotational. In this study, all systems are modeled by ANSYS finite element program and analyses are performed using IMPVALL/I-ELC180 component of Imperial Valley (1940) earthquake. Dynamic equations of motions are solved by using Newmark integration algorithm. It is seen that both water length and height affect the earthquake behavior of the arch dams considerably.
