        브이로그를 활용한 영어 말하기 수업이 한국 대학 EFL 학습자의 자기주도학습 능력, 학습 흥미, 말하기 실력에 미치는 효과

        This study investigated the effects of using Vlogs for English language learning on Korean EFL learners’ self-directed learning ability, learning interest, and speaking skills. In recent years, ‘Vlogging’ has become one of the most entertaining and popular ways to connect with people on social networking services (SNSs). Over one semester, an experimental group of 24 students participated in Vlogging activities (a total of 10 Vlogs was created and shared with their classmates), while a control group of 22 students received a traditional teaching method. To examine this study, 1) a pre-and post-questionnaire on participants’ self-directed learning ability, 2) a pre-and post-questionnaire on learning interests, and 3) a pre-and post-test on speaking abilities were conducted. The results indicated that the Vlogging-based instruction was more effective than the traditional classroom in terms of increasing students’ self-directed learning abilities and learning interests. In addition, the Vlogging learning group has shown a statistically significant improvement in the English speaking abilities concerned with vocabulary, task, fluency, and comprehension. The study also revealed that Vlogging activities were more beneficial in developing students’ speaking skills than traditional classroom activities. This study suggested that Vlogging activities are useful to develop learners’ self-directed learning ability, learning interests, and speaking skills.

        북한의 유튜브 대외 선전매체 활용 양상

        이 글은 북한 유튜브 콘텐츠영상의 활용양상을 분석하여 특징과 의미를 살펴보고자 했다. 분석 결과, 첫째, 국제관광 사업 추진 및 홍보를 목적으로 다국어 콘텐츠를 제작하여 다양한 전략을 통해 활용하였다. 이는 인터넷 활용에 따른 정치적 영향과 경제발전 사이에서 최근 경제발전을 통한 이익에 중점을 둔 북한 당국의 행보라 할 수 있다. 더불어 개방적이고 유연한 미디어플랫폼 활용양상도 확인할 수 있었다. 둘째, 북한은 유튜버가 등장하는 브이로그(Vlog)형식을 선택하면서 보통의 일상을 이야기하고자 했지만, 일상의 강조는 브이로그에서 나타나는 의미와는 다른 차원의 보통의 삶으로 생산되고 소비되었다. 셋째, 유튜브 콘텐츠 내 정치적 내용을 최소화하며 보편국가로서 대외의 인식 전환을 시도하고자 했다. 국제적 미디어 환경 속에서 북한이 보이고 있는 참여와 소통 의지는 국제사회 일원으로 편승하기 위한 자체적 검열의 시도라 할 수 있다. This article analyzes the state of use of content video in North Korea’s YouTube channel and examines its characteristics and meaning. According to the analysis results, for the purpose of promoting and promoting international tourism, multilingual content was produced and utilized in various strategies, considering the cultural environment and context of each country. It can be said that the political impact of internet use and the problem in economic development are actions that focus on the commercial interests of recent economic development. It also confirmed how open and flexible media platforms are utilized. Second, North Korea tried to talk about everyday life by choosing the form of a Vlog in which YouTubers appear, but the emphasis of daily life was produced and consumed in a different level from the meaning of the Vlog. Third, it tried to minimize the political content in YouTube and change its perception of North Korea as a universal nation. In an international media environment, North Korea’s willingness to participate and communicate is an attempt to self-censorship to take advantage of the international community.

        토포필리아 관점의 도시 브랜딩 특성에 관한 연구

        (연구배경 및 목적) 세계의 각 도시들은 대외적으로는 국가경쟁력 강화와 대내적으로는 지역 발전을 위해 적극적으로 도시 브랜딩을 활용하고 있다. 도시 브랜딩은 심볼, 로고 등 그래픽적 아이덴티티 확립에서 도시의 특색을 반영한 공간으로 그 범위가 확장되고 있다. 도시 브랜딩의 목적은 그 도시가 의도한 가치를 소비자들이 긍정적으로 인식하고 도시를 기억하여 재방문하도록 유도하는 데 있다. 이를 위해서는 소비자 입장에서 공간을 기억하는 가치기반의 관점에서 접근할 필요가 있다. 토포필리아는 공간과 장소의 개념을 분리하여 물리적인 환경인 ‘공간’이 공간에 대한 개인의 경험과 정서적 교류를 통해 특정한 ‘장소’로 인지된다는 이론이다. 이에 본 연구는 소비자 인식 가치에 기반한 토포필리아 관점에서 도시 브랜딩의 공간의 특성이 성공적인 도시 브랜딩 공간에서 어떻게 효과적으로 발현되고 영향을 미치는지 알아보고자 한다. (연구방법) 먼저, 토포필리아와 도시 브랜딩의 개념을 기존 문헌과 연구를 통해 재정립하고, 토포필리아와 도시 브랜딩의 특징을 도출하였다. 이를 바탕으로 토포필리아 관점에서 도시 브랜딩의 공간 특성을 도출하였다. 이후 도출한 특성을 중심으로 대상 공간을 선정하여 사례 연구를 진행한다. 대상 공간은 성공적인 도시 브랜딩의 공간 4곳을 선정하여 각 공간에서 도출된 특성이 어떻게 발현되는지 분석하였다. (결과) 본 연구에서는 토포필리아 관점으로서 도시 브랜딩의 공간 특성 중 정체성 지각과 상징적 태도의 역사성이 높게 나타났다. 그리고 상징적 태도의 상징성과 경험적 신뢰의 안전성에서 높게 나타났다. 이는 도시의 특색을 반영하고 잘 보존된 도시 브랜딩의 역사적 문화적 공간은 시각적 자극과 개인의 경험을 통해 특정 장소로 인식 전환에 긍정적인 영향을 주는 요소로 의미가 크다고 유추할 수 있다. (결론) 도시 브랜딩에서 공간은 시각적 자극과 동시에 경험을 통한 정서적 교류의 매개체이다. 기존 공간이 가지고 있는 역사적 환경적 요소를 정체성을 기반으로, 상징적으로 잘 보존하고 현대적으로 경험 가능한 공간으로 전략적으로 활용할 때 소비자들에게 가치 있는 특정 장소로 인식되고 오랫동안 기억될 수 있다. 이는 도시 브랜딩은 역사적 가치 공간을 잘 보존하고, 그 공간을 현대적으로 재해석해 적극적으로 활용하는 활동이 도시 브랜딩의 성공적인 결과로 귀결됨을 알 수 있다. 이를 위해서는 도시의 문화적 역사적 이해를 바탕으로 현대 소비자 가치기반의 니즈를 파악하여 과정을 수행할 때 도시 브랜딩의 공간으로 성공적인 결과를 가져올 수 있음을 유추할 수 있다. (Background and Purpose) Cities around the world are actively using urban branding to strengthen national competitiveness and internally develop the region. Urban branding is moving away from establishing graphic identities such as symbols and logos in spaces that reflect the city's characteristics. The purpose of urban branding is to encourage consumers to positively recognize the intended value and to remember the city and return. This requires a value-based approach that makes spaces memorable from a consumer’s perspective. Topophilia is the theory that "space", a physical environment that separates the concept of space and place, is perceived as a specific "place" through personal experiences and emotional exchanges. From a Topopilia perspective based on consumer awareness values, the study explores how the nature of urban branding effectively manifests and influences the characteristics of urban branding in a successful urban branding space. (Method) First, the concept of topopilia and urban branding was redefined through existing literature and research, and the characteristics of topopilia and urban branding were derived. Based on this, the spatial characteristics of urban branding were derived from a Topopilia perspective. The target space was selected based on the characteristics derived, and a case study was used to analyze how the characteristics derived from each space are expressed. (Results) In this study, the historicity of identity perception and symbolic attitudes was high among the spatial characteristics of urban branding from a Topopilia perspective. It also appeared high in the symbolism of symbolic attitudes and the safety of empirical trust. This reflects the city's characteristics and shows that the historical cultural space of well-preserved urban branding has a significant positive influence on changing perceptions through visual stimulation and personal experience. (Conclusions) In urban branding, space is a medium of visual stimulation and emotional exchange through experience. Based on the identity of the historical environmental elements of the existing space, it can be recognized and remembered as a specific place of value for consumers when strategically utilized as a symbolically well-preserved and modernly experienced space. It should be noted that urban branding preserves historical value spaces well, and actively using modern reinterpretations results in successful urban branding. This allows us to identify the needs of modern consumers’ values based on the cultural and historical understanding of a city; from this, we can infer that the process has a successful outcome.

        Cancer risk based on alcohol consumption levels: a comprehensive systematic review and meta-analysis

        OBJECTIVES: Alcohol consumption is a well-established risk factor for cancer. Despite extensive research into the relationship between alcohol consumption and cancer risk, the effect of light alcohol consumption on cancer risk remains a topic of debate. To contribute to this discourse, we conducted a comprehensive systematic review and meta-analysis. METHODS: Our systematic review aimed to investigate the associations between different levels of alcohol consumption and the risk of several cancer types. We focused on analyzing prospective associations using data from 139 cohort studies. Among them, 106 studies were included in the meta-analysis after a quantitative synthesis. RESULTS: Our analysis did not find a significant association between light alcohol consumption and all-cause cancer risk (relative risk, 1.02; 95% confidence interval, 0.99 to 1.04), but we observed a dose-response relationship. Light alcohol consumption was significantly associated with higher risks of esophageal, colorectal, and breast cancers. Light to moderate drinking was associated with elevated risks of esophageal, colorectal, laryngeal, and breast cancers. Heavy drinking was also found to contribute to the risk of stomach, liver, pancreas, and prostate cancers, thereby increasing the risk of almost all types of cancer. Additionally, females generally had lower cancer risks compared to males. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings highlight that cancer risks extend beyond heavy alcohol consumption to include light alcohol consumption as well. These findings suggest that there is no safe level of alcohol consumption associated with cancer risk. Our results underscore the importance of public health interventions addressing alcohol consumption to mitigate cancer risks.

        Efficacy of CPAP Therapy in Reducing Hypernasality in a Case with Repaired Submucous Cleft Palate

        Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy can be an effective speech therapy approach for reducing hypernasality. It is based on the rationale of improving the strength and endurance of the velopharyngeal muscles specific to speech production. This investigation presents a case study involving an 8-week, 6 days per week regimen of self-administered home CPAP therapy. The study investigated whether the subject benefited from the therapy and whether the effectiveness of the CPAP therapy remained stable and constant following the therapy. A 10-year-old boy, who had exhibited persistent hypernasality after undergoing a surgical procedure to correct submucous cleft palate, was assigned the 8-week in-home CPAP therapy procedure. After completing the 8-week protocol, the boy demonstrated improvement in speech intelligibility, nasalance scores, and velopharyngeal function as measured by aerodynamic tools, and his speech was perceived as mildly hypernasal. However, the effectiveness of the initial administration of CPAP therapy was not maintained after a 5-month intermission. Subsequently, another 8-week regimen of CPAP therapy was administered, and the degree of hypernasality and speech intelligibility showed improvement once again following the second administration. This case study suggests the need for further investigation to establish more appropriate therapeutic protocols which improve the short and long-term effectiveness of the CPAP therapy procedure.

      • A study on development of car seat thermal comfort evaluation system

        In the automobile industry, the technical characteristic of each component has been exploding improved. The technology level is capable of benchmarking from many manufacturers and it is possible to maintain a similar level, so recently, the sensitivity aspect given to users has emerged as an important part. Among them, the seat is in contact with the passenger's body during boarding, and it has a very close relationship to judging the comfort or discomfort. In this research, we tried to develop a seat thermal comfort evaluation method to evaluate the influence of the characteristic on the real environment and the human sensibility, based on the physical properties of the seat cover. In addition, by using the qualitative data (subjective assessment questionnaire) and quantitative evaluations (temperature / humidity, physiological signal; EEG, ECG, GSR), the validity of the evaluation method was verified. As a result, it was observed that the variation of the temperature and humidity of the seat cushion with the change of the seasons had a very significant effect on the comfort of the seat. In addition, it proved that the seat thermal comfort evaluation system satisfying the sensitivity from the physical property is valid.

      • Establishment of bioassay system for RNAi-based control of Frankliniella occidentalis

        Frankliniella occidentalis is a notorious polyphagous crop pest causing tremendous economic loss. It damages flowers and leaves of host plants and also carries severe plant viruses. During last few decades, it has spread to all continents via transport of plant materials. Following extensive use of insecticides to control F. occidentalis, it has developed high level of resistance due to its short life cycle and high reproductive potential. In this study, RNA interference (RNAi)-based bioassay system was developed to find an alternative control measure for insecticide-resistant population of F. occidentalis. A variety of genes involved in various physiological mechanisms were selected for the test of dsRNA potency (tubulin, v-ATPase, amylase, aquaporin etc.). Each bioassay unit made by 3D printing has a leaf disc placed on 150 ㎕ of 50 ng/ul dsRNA solution and 20 thrips. The mortality was checked, and the dsRNA and leaf disc were replaced every 24 h for 72 h. Of the 20 genes tesetd, tubulin, v-ATPase, and aquaporin showed 31, 38, 38 and 45% of corrected mortality at 72 h post-treatment, respectively. This result suggests the potential of these genes as candidate lethal genes for RNAi-based F. occidentalis control system.

      • Improving PM<SUB>10</SUB> and PM<SUB>2.5</SUB> Forecasts in Korea using the EnKF Aerosol Data Assimilation

        The air quality of South Korea is greatly influenced by long-range transport from China under westerlies as well as local sources. Therefore, accurate air quality prediction of Korea are challenges associated with numerical model forecasts, such as considerable uncertainties of the initial conditions (ICs), the physical and chemical aspects of the parameterized model, and the various emissions. The aerosol data assimilation (DA) system could significantly improve aerosol forecasting skills by reducing these uncertainties. This study developed the aerosol data assimilation and forecast system using Weather Research and Forecasting model with Chemistry (WRF-Chem) model and Ensemble Kalman Filter (EnKF) method. Unlike the variational assimilation method, the advantages of EnKF are flow-dependent background error covariance which is important in a fast-developing air quality system. The optimization of EnKF is very important since EnKF has a sampling problem due to limited ensemble number. This study optimized the EnKF system by alleviating the sampling problem through a multiphysics approach, emission perturbation, inflation, and covariance localization. The assimilated observations are aerosol optical depth (AOD) retrieved from the Geostationary Ocean Color Imager (GOCI) and the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS), surface PM10 and surface PM2.5. of China and South Korea. The quality of the DA analysis fields and the prediction skill were evaluated quantitatively over South Korea. The simulations with DA initialization showed significant improvements in the PM10 and PM2.5 forecast skills.

      • Antibacterial Analysis of Extracts from Selected Tropical Plants and Study on Potential Application to Antimicrobial Substance

        Since ancient times, some plants with antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties have been used in traditional medicine. In this study, the tropical plants from Malaysia were obtained by the International Center for Biological Materials Research (IBMRC), and the antibacterial activity of 87 samples was investigated. The antibacterial activity was determined by the disc diffusion method using gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. As a result, 6 extracts that significantly represented an inhibition zone against Gram-positive bacteria are as follows: Rhodamnia uniflora, Melastoma molle, Ochanostachys amentacea, Syzygium attenuatum, Melastoma muticu, Garcinia mangostana. In addition, extracts from G. mangostana and Leea indica showed antibacterial activity against Gram-negative bacteria. In conclusion, it was confirmed that extract from G. mangostana has high antibacterial activity and can be used as an antimicrobial substance with a wide range because it can be applied to both gram-positive and gram-negative.
