        Inhibitory action of salicylideneamino-2-thiophenol on NF-jB signaling cascade and cyclooxygenase-2 in HNE-treated endothelial cells

        In the present study, the anti-inflammatoryeffect of salicylideneamino-2-thiophenol (SAL-2), aderivative of salicylate, on a potent oxidant 4-hydroxynonenal(HNE)-induced oxidative stress was investigatedusing rat prostate endothelial (YPEN-1) cells. We focusedon anti-inflammatory activity of SAL-2 which was determinedby its ability to suppress COX-2 and iNOS geneexpression through suppression of NF-jB and redox regulation. We found that SAL-2 effectively inhibited HNEinducedreactive species generation, while upregulatedGSH/GSSG ratio. Prostagrandin (PG) E2 productionstimulated by arachidonic acid was suppressed by SAL-2. SAL-2 also downregulated COX-2 and iNOS expressioninduced by HNE, but salicylate did not. We found thatSAL-2 inhibited HNE-mediated IKK phosphorylation,IjBa degradation and nuclear translocation of p65 whichare linked to NF-jB activation. Furthermore, SAL-2inhibited HNE-induced activation of mitogen-activatedprotein kinases. Collectively, SAL-2 inhibited COX-2 andiNOS gene expression through suppression of NF-jBleading to the inhibition of PGE2 synthesis. Based on thesedata, we propose that with its combined effect on stronganti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory action, SAL-2 can be apotent anti-inflammatory agent for treatment of inflammatory-related diseases.

      • Numerical Study on Filtration of Microparticle from Non-point Source

        The impermeable area and the peak discharge volume have been consistently increasing due to widening of city development and renewal. Thus, distortion of water cycle has been serious problem compared to the past. When it comes to NPS pollution, lack of information on the load and characteristics of pollutants led to the insufficient reduction measures. Because the particles with size over 100 in road runoffs can go through gravitational sedimentation, they are controllable in grit chamber according to the structure of NPS pollution reduction facilities. In this section, using CFD model, the behavior of fluid and particle distribution according to structure characteristics of reduction facilities will be simulated and the optical condition for successful treatment in grit chamber will be calculated. As a result of study, numerical analysis about treatment of particulate pollutants with size greater than 100 for which gravitational sedimentation is possible showed that by controlling the inflow velocity the sedimentation efficiency could be improved and it is determined that maintenance will become facilitated through the installment of facilities such as baffles at grit chamber.

      • 강화 학습을 통한 센싱 기반 로봇 제어 기술 연구

        본 논문은 2차원 공간을 움직이는 로봇의 제어 시스템에 대한 강화 학습(Reinforcement Learning) 기반 연구 내용을 서술한다. 강화 학습은 인공지능 연구의 한 갈래로써, 로봇 등의 제어 시스템 구축에 높은 활용성을 갖는다. 본 논문에서는 현실적인 환경에서 경량화된 로봇이 수집할 수 있는 제한된 센싱 정보를 바탕으로 로봇이 특정 위치에 도달하는 시나리오를 정의하고, REINFORCE 알고리즘에 기반한 학습 시스템을 제안한다. 구현을 통한 학습 수행 및 시뮬레이션 결과를 통해 인공신경망이 학습되는 과정을 보이고, 실질적인 상황에서 활용할 수 있는 인공지능 기반 로봇 제어 시스템의 방향성을 제시한다.

        Popularizing Grief: Tragedies and Tragic Events in Ancient Athens

        이 논문은 민주주의 사회에서 애도(哀悼)의 정치적 역할이 어떻게 해석되어야 하는지에 대한 대안적 관점을 제시한다. 이 주제에 대한 정치사상의 기존 연구는 주로 애도를 하나의 온전한 정치적 도구로 가정하고 정치 엘리트 집단이 어떤 방식으로 애도의 감정을 대중 전체의 정치행태를 조작하는데 사용해 왔는지를 중심으로 진행되어 왔다. 반면 본 연구는 애도가 다양한 정치적 특성을 지니고 있고 각각의 특성이 서로 다른 형태로 대중을 자극한다고 주장한다. 본 연구는 소포클레스의 ‘안티고네’와 투키디데스의 ‘페리클레스의 장례 연설’을 교차분석하여 어떻게 고대 그리스 민주시민 공동체가 애도를 통해 때로는 반동적 정치 행태를 보이고 때로는 보이지 않게 되는지 알아본다. 특히 이 연구는 애도의 두 가지 정치적 특성인 전염성(contagiousness)과 반목성(antagonism)이 동시에 발현될 경우 대중적 저항 운동의 가능성이 매우 높아짐을 주장한다. This paper addresses an alternative perspective on how the political role of grief ought to be understood and examined in a democratic context. Against previous literature’s focus on grief as a singular means for the elites to manipulate the masses, we suggest that grief possesses various traits that each take part in stimulating the masses to certain political reactions. By cross-analyzing Sophocles’ Antigone and Thucydides’ account of Pericles’ Funeral Oration, we explore how the democratic citizenry have been triggered into reactionary political behaviors through grief. Specifically, this study asserts that the emotion of grief contains two political traits – contagiousness and antagonism – that, when triggered simultaneously, excites reactionary political movements from the masses.

      • Characteristics of Electronically Controlled Heavy-Duty Dual Fuel Engine

        In use 25ton trailers with Hyundai electronically controlled D6CB was converted to dual fuel system. To estimate economical efficiency, test vehicles have been operated on a certain driving route repeatedly. Test gross weight is about 30ton and both MPI and SPI natural gas injection systems are evaluated. Fuel economy, driving distance per refueling and driveability are examined in the field test including free way. Developed vehicle can be operated over 500km with dual fuel and shows 85% of diesel substitution ratio. Driveability is similar with but passing acceleration. It will be improved by calibration process. Test engine was set up for investigating power output, thermal efficiency and emission. ND 13-mode tests were performed for the test cycle. The emission result of dual fuel meets K2006 regulation the diesel equivalent engine performance output condition. Thermal efficiency is slightly low at full load condition and even worse at low load as compared to diesel operation.

        A Historical Perspective on the Integration of Mind and Material presented in Dharmakāya and Adībuddha

        This study is to examine the formation and development of Buddhist thought concerning mind and material oriented with Dharmakāya and Adībuddha. In the age of Gautama Buddha religion of India maintained the theory of Brahman, a creator of universe along with the materialism of elements asserted by Indian philosophers. Gautama Buddha denied the creator of heavenly god or materialism instead asserted Dependent Origination that any manifestation of mind and material resulted from elements and environment regardless of any predefined attributes or nature. The foundation of the Dependent Origination and the Four Elements of material were designated by Dharma. In the age of Mahāyāna Buddhism. the rule of Dependent Origination and emptiness were integrated into Dharmakāya as a personalization of Dharma. The idea of Two Truth in Mahāyāna Buddhism overcomed the danger of regarding Dharma or Dharma-kāya as independent or eternal nature by dividing all the phenomenon into properties of emptiness and that of distinction and discrimination. The idea of Dharmakāya developed to the three bodies of Buddha, which attributes are described in Ornament Sūtra and also in Kālacakra Tantra as Adībuddha, which prove the historical continuity of Mahāyāna Buddhism that were transmitted to Tibetan Buddhism survived today.

        Purification, crystallization and X-ray crystallographic analysis of methylmalonyl-CoA epimerase from Metallosphaera sedula

        Methylmalonyl-CoA epimerase (MMCE) is an enzyme involved in the carbon capturing 3-HP/4-HB cycle, by catalyzing the reaction of converting (S)-methylmalonyl-CoA to (R)-methylmalonyl-CoA. In this study, we overexpressed MMCE from Metallosphaera sedula (MsMMCE) and purified the protein to homogeneity by Ni-NTA affinity and size-exclusion chromatography. The MsMMCE protein was crystallized using the hanging-drop vapor-diffusion method in the presence of 20% (w/v) polyethylene glycol 3350, and 0.2 M ammonium nitrate at 293 K. X-ray diffraction data were collected to a maximum resolution of 2.1 Å. The MsMMCE crystals belong to the space group P21 with unit cell parameters a = 51.87 Å, b = 79.00 Å, c = 106.09, α = γ = 90.0°, β = 95.80°. With six molecules of MsMMCE per an asymmetric unit, the crystal volume per unit of protein mass is 2.33 Å3 Da–1, which corresponds to a solvent content of approximately 47.13%.

      • 전산유체역학을 통한 요소첨가 선택적 촉매환원장치의 질소산화물 저감 예측에 관한 연구

        To our knowledge, diesel vehicles are known as compression ignition engines, so diesel emissions contain relatively high levels of nitrogen oxides(NOx) and particulate matter(PM). Specially, NOx is a key ingredient in the formation of unban smog, and contribute to the formation of acid rain. Therefore, diesel vehicle should be equipped with urea-SCR system as high performance catalyst in order to reduce harmful NOx emissions. This paper presents a numerical study of the NOx reduction efficiency of urea-SCR systems using porous media in the three-dimensional CFD code. And tnen multi-phase flow characteristics coupled with chemical reactions of the transport phenomena in the urea-SCR system are predicted numerically using Eulerian-Lagrangian CFD analysis that can be used to compare the experiment results.
