        Antispasmodic Effects of Junsibaekchul-San In Vivo and In vitro

        In Vivo and In vitro antispasmodic effects of Jun-Si-Baek-Chul-San, a Traditional Korean Polyherbal Medicineconsisted of 7 types of herbs were observed in the present study. To clarify the effects of Jun-Si-Baek-Chul-San, on accelerating small intestinal movement induced by the stimulation of cholinergic neurotransmission, we evaluated the effects of Jun-Si-Baek-Chul-San on In vivo carbachol (an acetylcholinergic agent)-accelerated mice small intestinal transit and on In vitro contractions induced by low-frequency electrostimulation, KCl, histamine or acetylcholine using isolated guinea pig ileum. To induce the acceleration of mice small intestinal transit, Carbachol 1 mg/kg was once subcutaneously dosed 15min before last administration of the test drugs. In the present study, Jun-Si-Baek-Chul-San 500, 250 and 125 mg/kg or domperidone 20 mg/kg were orally pretreated on the carbachol-accelerated mice small intestinal transit once a day for 7 days and the small intestinal transit rateof activated charcoal powder were monitored. In vitro assays, Jun-Si-Baek-Chul-San1, 0.1, 0.01 and 0.001 mg/ml or domperidone 2×10<SUP>-5</SUP>M were treated 10min before ileal contraction was induced by filed stimulation, acetylcholine, KCl and histamine, and the % changes of contractions were observed compared to the treatment of inducer alone. In spontaneous contraction, the % changes of contractions were observed compared to treatment of vehicle alone at 10min after Jun-Si-Baek-Chul-San or domperidone treatment. The efficacy of Jun-Si-Baek-Chul-San was compared to those of domperidone. High concentration, 1 mg/ml of Jun-Si-Baek-Chul-San was found to decrease the spontaneous contraction of the isolated guinea-pig ileum. In addition, Jun-Si-Baek-Chul-San decrease contractions induced by electrostimulation, acetylcholine, histamine and KCl in the isolated guinea-pig ileum. In addition, Jun-Si-Baek-Chul-San effectively inhibited the accelerated small intestinal movement induced by carbachol stimulation of cholinergic neurotransmission in In vivo. Based on the results, although the exact molecular or action mechanism and which herbs or compound in Jun-Si-Baek-Chul-San are responsible for actions, it was concluded that Jun-Si-Baek-Chul-San normalization in the accelerated intestinal motility might be interfere with a variety of muscarinic, adrenergic and histaminic receptor activities or with the mobilization of calcium ions required for smooth muscle contraction non-specificly. Therefore, it is expected that Jun-Si-Baek-Chul-San will be promising as a prescription of clinical treatment of digestive tract disorders such as accelerated the motility of intestine, diarrhea or intestinal painful contractions.

        Gut-microbiome Taxonomic Profiling as Non-invasive Biomarkers for the Early Detection of Alcoholic Hepatocellular Carcinoma

        Background/Aims: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a prevalent form of primary liver cancer and the fifth leading cause of worldwide cancer mortality. Though early diagnosis of HCC is important, so far lack of effective biomarkers for early diagnosis of HCC has been a problem. In this study, we searched for potential functional biomarkers of alcoholic HCC by using metagenomics approach. Methods: Between September 2017 and April 2019, normal control (n=44), alcoholic liver cirrhosis (n=44), and alcoholic HCC (n=13) groups were prospectively enrolled and analyzed. Gut microbiota was analyzed using the 16S-based microbiome taxonomic profiling platform of EzBioCloud Apps and analyzing system. Results: There was a statistically significant difference among groups in diversity (P<0.05). In the comparison of phylum between cirrhosis and HCC, Proteobacteria were increased and Bacteroidetes were decreased. Firmicutes were not significantly different among the three groups. In the taxonomic profiling, relative abundance of Lactobacillus in the cirrhosis and HCC groups showed richness (P<0.05). In the biomarker analysis between cirrhosis and HCC, obiquinome Fe-S protein 3, global nitrogen regulator, Vesicle-associated membrane protein 7, toxin YoeB, peroxisome-assembly ATPase, and nitrogen oxide reductase regulator were differently expressed (P<0.001). Conclusions: Alcoholic HCC showed different expressions in the stool taxonomy and biomarker compared with that of cirrhosis and control. Therefore, new biomarkers using stool analysis for alcoholic HCC are necessary. (J Liver Cancer 2020;20:32-40)

        Design of PLC Triplexer Using Three Waveguide Interferometer

        A novel planar lightwave circuit (PLC) triplexer using a three-waveguide interferometer (TWI) is proposed and examined using the transfer matrix and the beam propagation methods. The proposed triplexer consists of two three-waveguide couplers and three waveguides connecting the couplers. Simulation for the TWI triplexer shows the excess losses of 0.03 dB and 0.94 dB with the crosstalks of -22.3 dB and -14.5 dB in reception, respectively, for the wavelength of 1490- and 1550-nm, while showing the excess loss of 1.75 dB in transmission for the wavelength of 1310 nm. The proposed design shows compact feature as short as 11.5 mm for the refractive-index contrast of 0.45%.

        Red Electroluminescence Device Using a Cu-Coated CaS:Eu2+ Phosphor

        Cu-coated CaS:Eu2+ phosphors are synthesized by using a wet-processing method. The alternat- ing current(A.C.) powder electroluminescence devices are fabricated by a screen-printing method: ITO PET lm/phosphor layer (Cu-coated CaS:Eu2+)/dielectric layer (BaTiO3)/silver electrode. Their electroluminescence spectra show a deep red emission peaking at 650 nm due to the f-d tran- sitions of Eu2+ ions in CaS:Eu2+ phosphor, indicating that the purity of red color is superior to that with a commercial ZnS:Mn2+ phosphor. With increasing Cu concentration, the electroluminescent intensity is maximized at an optimal Cu concentration and then decreases, which is explained by two competing factors, an improved conductivity and a reduced transparency.       • A Prewhitening RLS PAST (Projection Alternated Subspace Tracking) Algorithm for Time Varying Principal Component Tracking

        In this paper we propose a new principal componentextracting algorithm based on the PAST. A prewhitening procedure and a variable forgetting factor are introduced, which makes it numerically robust and agile to nonstationarity. The estimation capability of the proposed algorithm is demonstrated by computer simulations of signal subspace estimation.
