        정적해석에 의한 학교 체육관의 내진 성능 평가

        The seismic responses of small-scale spatial frames such as school gymnasiums are usually evaluated using static analysis, although time-history analysis should be carried out to fully incorporate the dynamic responses of the structures against seismic motions. In this study, advanced static analysis procedures are presented for school gymnasiums that will improve the performance evaluation against seismic motions. The seismic loads are approximated by equivalent static loads corresponding to the two performance levels; i.e., Levels 1 and 2 defined by the Japanese building standard. The importance of utilizing the eigenmode in the load pattern is discussed. Simple static analysis procedures are presented for evaluation of maximum vertical acceleration. It is shown that the static analysis for Level 2 input significantly underestimates the responses by dynamic analysis; however, the inelastic responses for Level 2 are shown to be successfully evaluated using the equivalent linearization that is similar to the “method based on calculation of limit strength” for building frames in Japan. 학교체육관과 같은 소 규모 공간구조물의 지진응답은 본래 지진동에 대한 동적응답을 시각이력해석에 의해 검증해야 하지만 통상은 정적해석에 의해 평가하고 있다. 본 연구에서는 학교 체육관의 내진성능평가를 가능하게 하는 정적해석의 진행수순을 나타내기로 한다. 지진하중은 2개의 성능 레벨 즉, 일본의 건축기준법에 정의되어 있는 레벨 1과 2에 대응하는 등가인 정적하중으로 근사한다. 또한, 재하 패턴으로서 고유모드형을 사용하는 것에 대한 중요성을 논의하고, 정적해석의 간단한 순서에 의해 최대연직방향가속도를 평가할 수 있는 것을 나타낸다. 아울러, 레벨 2의 입력에 의한 정적해석은 동적해석으로 얻어진 응답치를 과소평가하지만, 일본의 중층구조에 사용되는 “극한내력계산법”에 근사한 등가선형화 기법에 의해 레벨 2의 입력에 대한 탄소성응답이 가능하다는 것을 나타내고자 한다.

        <P>Palatal ridges, or rugae palatinae, are corrugated structures observed in the hard palate region. They are found in most mammalian species, but their number and arrangement are species-specific. Nine palatal rugae are found in the mouse secondary palate. Previous studies have shown that epithelial Shh signaling in the palatal ridge plays an important role during rugae development. Moreover, Wnt family members, including LEF1, play a functional role in orofacial morphogenesis. To explore the function of Shh during rugae development, we utilized the maternal transfer of 5E1 (anti-Shh antibody) to mouse embryos. 5E1 induced abnormal rugae patterning characterized by a spotted shape of palatal ridge rather than a stripe. The expression patterns of Shh and Shh-related genes, Sostdc1, Lef1 and Ptch1, were disrupted following 5E1 injection. Moreover, rugae-specific cell proliferation and inter-rugae-specific apoptosis were affected by inhibition of Shh signaling. We hypothesize that the altered gene expression patterns and the change in molecular events caused by the inhibition of Shh signaling may have induced abnormal rugae patterning. Furthermore, we propose a reaction-diffusion model generated by Wnt, Shh and Sostdc1 signaling. In this study, we show that Sostdc1, a secreted inhibitor of the Wnt pathway, is a downstream target of Shh and hypothesize that the interaction of Wnt, Shh and Sostdc1 is a pivotal mechanism controlling the spatial patterning of palatal rugae.</P>

      • Transcriptional activation of hypoxia-inducible factor-1 (HIF-1) in myeloid cells promotes angiogenesis through VEGF and S100A8

        <P>Emerging evidence indicates that myeloid cells are essential for promoting new blood vessel formation by secreting various angiogenic factors. Given that hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF) is a critical regulator for angiogenesis, we questioned whether HIF in myeloid cells also plays a role in promoting angiogenesis. To address this question, we generated a unique strain of myeloid-specific knockout mice targeting HIF pathways using human S100A8 as a myeloid-specific promoter. We observed that mutant mice where HIF-1 is transcriptionally activated in myeloid cells (by deletion of the von Hippel–Lindau gene) resulted in erythema, enhanced neovascularization in matrigel plugs, and increased production of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) in the bone marrow, all of which were completely abrogated by either genetic or pharmacological inactivation of HIF-1. We further found that monocytes were the major effector producing VEGF and S100A8 proteins driving neovascularization in matrigel. Moreover, by using a mouse model of hindlimb ischemia we observed significantly improved blood flow in mice intramuscularly injected with HIF-1–activated monocytes. This study therefore demonstrates that HIF-1 activation in myeloid cells promotes angiogenesis through VEGF and S100A8 and that this may become an attractive therapeutic strategy to treat diseases with vascular defects.</P>

        Socio-Economic Factors and Women’s Empowerment: Evidence from Punjab, Pakistan

        The empowerment ofwomenis an essential objective to fully engage them in economic life and achieve sustainable growth throughout the world. Providing basic facilities to women is one form of empowerment. This paper examines the extent of women’s empowerment in Punjab, Pakistan and its divisions, along with rural and urban regions. In addition, we check the effect of the gender wage differential on the current dilemma by implementing Alkire et al.’s [2013.The women’s empowerment in agriculture index (Working Paper No. 58). Our results show that 34.91% of women are empowered in Punjab overall, with independence being the highest dimensional contributor, and ownership of assets being the least. Women are 31.43% more empowered in urban regions. The results indicate that Islamabad has significantly more women’s empowerment, while Dera Ghazi Khan has the lowest percentage of empowered women. To assess particular impacts of different socio-economic and demographic variables on women’s empowerment, logistic regression model is applied, revealing that most socio-economic and demographic variables have significant impacts on the current scenario, and variation in any variable causes significant variations in the status of women’s empowerment, with increased wage differential in particular, decreasing the probability of women being empowered.

        Intrathoracic anastomosis using handsewn purse-string suturing by the double-ligation method in laparo-thoracoscopic esophagectomy

        Purpose: In minimally invasive esophagectomy (MIE), it is important to reduce the rate of anastomotic leakage to ensure its safety. At our institute, the double-ligation method (DLM) has been introduced to insert and fix the anvil of the circular stapler for intracorporeal circular esophagojejunostomy in gastric surgery. We adopted this method for intrathoracic anastomosis (IA) in MIE. The aim of this study was to investigate the safety of IA with DLM in MIE. Methods: In this study, 48 patients diagnosed with primary middle or lower third segment thoracic esophageal carcinoma with clinical stage I, II, III or IV disease were retrospectively evaluated. Postoperative outcomes were assessed. Results: Among the 48 patients, 42 patients underwent laparo-thoracoscopic esophagectomy and IA using a circular stapler with the DLM. The average total operation time and thoracoscopic operation time were 433 and 229 minutes, respectively. The average pursestring suturing time was 4.7 minutes. The rates of anastomotic leakage and stenosis were 2.4% and 14.3%, respectively. The overall incidence of postoperative complications (Clavien- Dindo grade of ≥III) was 16.7%. The average postoperative stay was 16 days. Conclusion: The procedure of IA using a circular stapler with the DLM in MIE was safe and provided a low rate of anastomotic leakage.
