        Investigating the Musical Mind : Situated Cognition, Artistic Human-Robot Interaction Design, and Cognitive Musicology

        There are different domains in which convergence might take place. Within the arts we can think of the convergence of different forms of expressive media such as music, theater, film, and dance. Concerning media, we also may think of convergence of technical representations of different kinds of modalities as in multi media and multi-modal environments. Furthermore, in the sciences one can think of convergence of different approaches to research questions. Artistic human-robot interaction design with schema theory might provide a basis for the study of subjective and objective mind using new me dia art environments as laboratories. The subjective or individual mind is normally studied in cognitive science. The objective mind or culture is studied within the humanities. Cognitive science as situated cognition and the humanities might converge in investigating the mind. Cognitive musicology is given as an example of a possible converging way of studying the subjective and objective mind. The use of robots plays an essential part of such a converging approach. Artistic hum an-robot interaction design is proposed as a research strategy. Social schema theory is related to artistic human-robot interaction design. The humanities, I think, should actively take part in the formation of a society in which humans are socially interacting with robots or artificial agents in daily life, art, entertainment, edutainment, therapy, and teaching.

      • Identity Formation and Self-Reflection Strategies in the Development of Apparel Design ePortfolios

        Visual literacy, a key element of a design portfolio, is achieved by communicating a consistent visual aesthetic with respect to design elements, design principles and individual style. Yet, students often feel challenged in articulating their personal aesthetic or design philosophy in order to create a unifying design identity within a body of artifacts. This paper shares some best practices on overcoming this challenge through students' engagement in self-reflection and identity formation processes. The implemented innovative strategy in a senior-level portfolio development course for apparel designers involved four different phases: 1) one-on-one meetings to self-reflect on previous design work, 2) selection and revision of artifacts, 3) peer-review and critiques of revised portfolio artifacts, and 4) development of a final ePortfolio to showcase a unified design identity. It was evident that recording students' initial self-reflection in the form of a metacognitive oral report encouraged and motivated identity development in their portfolio. Further, students expressed their satisfaction in the ability to participate in the selection process of artifacts by self-reflecting about what they wanted to highlight about themselves and why. Overall, student outcomes from this strategy exceeded expectations and the portfolios developed were successful in creating a cohesive design identity.

        The Role of Ribose on Oxidative Stress During Hypoxic Exercise: A Pilot Study

        Oxygen free radicals are produced during stress, are unstable, and potentially interact with other cellular components or molecules. This reactivity can influence cellular function, including a prolongation in tissue recovery following exercise. We tested the effect of ribose (d-ribose), a pentose carbohydrate, in a double-blinded, crossover study on markers of free radical production during hypoxic exercise. Seven healthy volunteers cycled at their lactate threshold for 25 minutes while inhaling 16% $O_2$ with a subsequent 60-minute resting period at room air. Subjects ingested either placebo or 7 g of ribose in 250mL of water before and after the exercise session. Urinary malondialdehyde (MDA) and plasma reduced glutathione levels increased significantly during placebo ingestion ($0.2\;{\pm}\;0.03\;{\mu}M/mg$ and $0.26\;{\pm}\;0.29\;{\mu}M$, respectively) but were lower with ribose supplementation ($0.04\;{\pm}\;0.03\;{\mu}M/mg$ and $0.38\;{\pm}\;0.29\;{\mu}M$, respectively; P < .05). Uric acid levels were similar between groups (ribose vs. placebo, $4.55\;{\pm}\;0.06\;mg/dL$ vs. $4.67\;{\pm}\;0.06\;mg/dL$). Ribose demonstrated a beneficial trend in lower MDA and reduced glutathione levels during hypoxic stress.

        Kognitive Musikwissenschaft: naturalisierte Erforschung musikalischen Geistes

        In dem vorliegenden Artikel wird ein geisteswissenschaftliches Forschungsprogramm am Beispiel der Kognitiven Musikwissenschaft entworfen, das F or schungsergebnisse, Grundannahmen und Forschungsmethode der Kognitions- und Neurowissenschaften integriert. Als Konsequenz werden Forschungsziele und -fragen musikwissenschaftlicher Forschung, die als Kognitive Musikwissenschaft innerhalb des kognitionswissenschaftlichen Forschungsrahmens erfolgt, reformuliert bzw. neu bestimmt. Dabei wird folgendermaPen vorgegangen. Zunachst wird das Eindringen der Kognitions- und N eur owissenschaf ten in traditionell geisteswissenschaftliche Forschungsbereiche diskutiert. Dann werden Grundannahmen und Methodologie der Kognitionswissenschaft vorgestellt. Da derzeit in den geisteswissenschaftlichen Disziplinen ein kulturwissenschaftliches bzw. medienkulturwissenschaftliches Selbstverstandnis vorherrscht, wird gezeigt, dass sich Musikforschung auch heute noch als Geisteswissenschaft bestimmen lasst. Die geisteswissenschaftliche Musikforschung wird in einem nachsten Schritt in das kognitionswissenschaftliche Paradigma eingebettet. Daraus resultiert dann die Gliederung der Kognitiven Musikwissenschaft in Theoretische Musikologie, Psycho- und Neuromusikologie. Abschlie(3end werden liberlegungen angesprochen, dies es ermoglichen konnten, den vorwiegend individualpsychologisch ausgerichteten Forschungsansatz des kognitionswissenschaftlichen Forschungsrahmens, mit kulturell-historischen Forschungen der Musikethnologie und Historischen Musikwissenschaft zu verbinden, um die Kognitive Musikwissenschaft zu einer zeitgemafen Interpretationswissenschaft zu entwickeln.

        On Adaptation to Sparse Design in Bivariate Local Linear Regression

        Local linear smoothing enjoys several excellent theoretical and numerical properties, an in a range of applications is the method most frequently chosen for fitting curves to noisy data. Nevertheless, it suffers numerical problems in places where the distribution of design points(often called predictors, or explanatory variables) is spares. In the case of univariate design, several remedies have been proposed for overcoming this problem, of which one involves adding additional ″pseudo″ design points in places where the orignal design points were too widely separated. This approach is particularly well suited to treating sparse bivariate design problem, and in fact attractive, elegant geometric analogues of unvariate imputation and interpolation rules are appropriate for that case. In the present paper we introduce and develop pseudo dta rules for bivariate design, and apply them to real data.
