Comparative Study of Volatile Oil Content and Antimicrobial Activity of Pecan Cultivars Growing in Egypt

        Seham S. El Hawary,Soumaya S. Zaghloul,Ali M. El-Halawany,Mahitab H. El Bishbishy 한국식품영양과학회 2013 Journal of medicinal food Vol.16 No.11

The volatile oils obtained from the leaves of four pecan cultivars growing in Egypt were evaluated for their chemical composition and antimicrobial activity. The selected cultivars (cv.) were Carya illinoinensis (Wangneh.) K. Koch. cv. Wichita, C. illinoinensis cv. Western Schley, C. illinoinensis cv. Cherokee, and C. illinoinensis cv. Sioux. The gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analyses revealed that the volatile oils from samples of the different cultivars differ in composition and percentage of their components. b-Curcumene was found as the major constituent of the cv.Wichita oil, whereas germacrene D was the major component of cv. Sioux, cv. Cherokee, and cv. Western Schley. The antimicrobial activity was assayed using the Kirby-Bauer Method by measuring the zone of inhibition of growth. All volatile oils displayed an antimicrobial activity against the tested bacterial strains. On the other hand, only the volatile oil of cv. Wichita showed an antifungal effect on Aspergillus flavus. This work has identified candidates of volatile oils for future in vivo studies to develop antibiotic substitutes for the diminution of human and animal pathogenic bacteria. Nevertheless, the variations of the volatile oil components and antimicrobial potencies of the different studied cultivars, necessitate identifying the cultivars used in future studies.

        Seham. A. El Batran,N. S. Abdel-Azim,K. A. Abdel-Shafeek,A. A. Shahat,M.M. El-Missiry 한국생약학회 2005 Natural Product Sciences Vol.11 No.4

The aerial parts of Gomphocarpus sinaicus Boiss. yielded four flavonoids that were identified asisorhamnetin 3-O-rhamnoglucoside (1), luteolin-7-O-glucoside-3-O-rhamnoside (2), rutin (3) and rutin-7-O-rhamnoside (4). All of the isolated flavonoids were identified by spectroscopic methods (UV, FAB-MS, 1H-NMR& 13C-NMR) and in comparison with the literature data. The isolated flavonoids 1, 2 and 4 are reported here forthe first time from Gomphocarpus sinaicus Boiss. Three sets of experiments were carried out using the defattedalcoholic extract of Gomphocarpus sinaicus Boiss: the 1st experiment indicated that the LD50 was 49.82 mg/100 gb.wt. of intraperitoneally (i.p.) injected mice. The toxic signs were recorded within the first 24 hr post-injection.The 2nd experiment revealed that the extract of the plant exhibited significant anti-inflammatory effects in normalrats. The 3rd experiment was found that the tested doses of the extract in diabetic rats induced a significant decreasein serum glucose, AST, ALT, triglycerides, cholesterol and LDL, while HDL caused a significant increase.

A Distributed Fog-based Access Control Architecture for IoT

( Seham Alnefaie ),( Asma Cherif ),( Suhair Alshehri ) 한국인터넷정보학회 2021 KSII Transactions on Internet and Information Syst Vol.15 No.12

The evolution of IoT technology is having a significant impact on people’s lives. Almost all areas of people’s lives are benefiting from increased productivity and simplification made possible by this trending technology. On the downside, however, the application of IoT technology is posing some security challenges, among them, unauthorized access to IoT devices. This paper presents an Attribute-based Access Control Fog architecture that aims to achieve effective distribution, increase availability and decrease latency. In the proposed architecture, the main functional points of the Attribute-based Access Control are distributed to provide policy decision and policy information mechanisms in fog nodes, locating these functions near end nodes. To evaluate the proposed architecture, an access control engine based on the Attribute-based Access Control was built using the Balana library and simulated using EdgeCloudSim to compare it to the traditional cloud-based architecture. The experiments show that the fog-based architecture provides robust results in terms of reducing latency in making access decisions.

How Banks' Resources at the Retail Level Affect Their Output?

ALOTHMAN, Seham,AL-MAHISH, Mohammed Korea Distribution Science Association 2020 The Journal of Asian Finance, Economics and Busine Vol.7 No.12

The study aims to measure the productivity of the Saudi banking sector at the retail level using secondary data for 11 local banks from the period 2015-2019. The study uses an extended version of the Cobb-Douglas production function to account for the fact that as banks openup more retail branches, they will need to employ more labor. The extended Cobb-Douglas production function was estimated using the two-way fixed effect model to account for unobserved heterogeneity across Saudi banks resulting from differences in labor competencies and leadership style. Besides, the model accounts for unobserved heterogeneity among Saudi banks due to the advancement in electronic services over time. The results showed that labor, branches, customers' deposits, and fixed deposits have a positive effect on the total value of generated loans. Conversely, ATM has an insignificant effect on generated loans. The average scale elasticity shows that the Saudi banks at the retail level are operating under decreasing returns to scale. The average marginal rate of technical substitution shows that Saudi banks need at least one ATM to replace one unit of labor at the retail level while keeping the same level of output.
