Relationship Between Psychological Factors and Pain Intensity in Temporomandibular Disorders with or without Central Sensitization: A Cross-Sectional Observational Study Using Multiple Regression Analysis

Pérez Sebastián Eustaquio Martín,Pérez Sebastián Eustaquio Martín,Córdova José Andrés Díaz,Cortés Leidy Milena Posada 대한안면통증∙구강내과학회 2023 Journal of Oral Medicine and Pain Vol.48 No.3

Purpose: To quantify the relationship between perceived pain intensity and psychological variables in a sample of participants with temporomandibular disorder, with or without central sensitization (CS). Methods: A cross-sectional study with nonprobability convenience sampling was conducted from January 1, 2022, to June 30, 2023. Pain intensity (Numeric Pain Rating Scale), anxiety (State-Trait Anxiety Questionnaire, STAI), catastrophizing (Pain Catastrophizing Scale, PCS), perceived stress (Perceived Stress Scale, PSS), and sleep quality (Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, PSQI) were assessed. Statistical analysis was performed using IBM SPSS Statistics for Windows, Version 20.0 (IBM Co.), which included descriptive and normality analyses and the calculation of strength of multiple correlational regression. Results: A total of 52 (n=34 female 65.4%; n=18 male 34.6%) subjects with diagnosis of temporomandibular disorders (TMD) were finally included. A total of 26 participants (n=26, 50.0%) were cases suffered from CS (TMD-CS mean=46.62±11.24) while the remaining participants (n=26, 50.0%) were the controls (TMD-nCS mean=26.77, standard deviation [SD]=8.42). The pain intensity was moderate in both groups TMDCS (mean=7.62, SD=0.83) and TMD-nCS (mean=7.05, SD=0.86), anxiety (TMD-CS STAI mean=53.27, SD=11.54; TMD-nCS STAI mean=49, SD=11.55), catastrophizing (TMD-CS PCS mean=46.27, SD=9.75; TMD-nCS PCS mean=26.69, SD=4.97), perceived stress (TMDCS PSS mean=30.35, SD=4.91; TMD-nCS PSS mean=26.12, SD=6.60) and sleep quality (TMD-CS PSQI mean=15.81, SD=3.65; TMD-nCS PSQI mean=12.77, SD=2.76) levels were measured in both groups. In TMD-CS and TMD-nCS, higher anxiety levels were moderately and significantly associated with greater pain intensity β=0.4467 (t=2.477, p=0.021) and β=0.5087 (t=2.672, p=0.014). Nevertheless, catastrophizing, perceived stress and sleep quality were not associated to pain intensity in neither of group. Conclusions: In both TMD-CS and TMD-nCS patients, elevated anxiety levels were moderately and significantly associated with increased pain intensity. However, heightened levels of pain catastrophizing, perceived stress, and poor sleep quality were not significantly associated with increased pain intensity in either of the two analyzed groups.

Gulf of Urabá (Caribbean Colombia), a Tropical Estuary: A Review with Some General Lessons About How it Works

        Sebastián Contreras-Fernández,Lennin Florez-Leiva,María Camila Bernal-Sánchez,Wilberto Pacheco-Paternina,Shalenys Bedoya-Valestt,Lorenzo Portillo-Cogollo 한국해양과학기술원 2022 Ocean science journal Vol.57 No.4

Estuaries are highly diverse ecosystems that occur at the interface between land and sea and thus possess a high degree of environmental variation over short spatial and temporal scales. The Gulf of Urabá (1800 km 2; mean depth ~ 40 m) is a semiclosed estuarine area located in the southwestern part of the Caribbean Sea (South America). This large coastal–estuarine ecosystem operates as a biogeochemical reactor due to it featuring examples of high nutrient concentrations on the surface (NO 3- = 1619 μM; NO 2- = 0.505 μM; NH 4+  = 2.938 μM; PO 4 3- = 7.603 μM), high Chl α (max = 30.17; min = 0.02; mean = 9 mg m−3), as well as blooms of toxic algae, mostly Pseudo-nitzschia pseudodelicatissima. An outbreak of Tripos fusus causes bioluminescence and about 20 events of hypoxia (< 2–4 mg O 2 L−1) within a time series of 10 years. Despite this, information regarding the biological and biogeochemical oceanography (chlorophyll α, biomass, planktonic composition, nutrient cycling, mass balance of elements, and interannual variability) remains non-existent. Therefore, elucidating an ecosystem’s thresholds for various features is necessary for managing marine ecosystems, and especially for climate change projections. We here present a review of the functioning of this estuary, evaluating and reviewing each aspect of oceanographic variability.

Legal Pluralism and Transitional Justice in Colombia - Is the Special Jurisdiction for Peace a Hybrid Tribunal?

        Juan Sebastiá,n Villamil Rodrí,guez 세계헌법학회 한국학회 2020 世界憲法硏究 Vol.26 No.1

The Special Jurisdiction for Peace was the judicial mechanism chosen by the negotiating parties in Havana to overcome the Colombian armed conflict that lasted for more than five decades and split this country into violence. The universalist nature of this peace accord, and the open structure of the Colombian Constitution, compel the judges and the prosecutors of this special jurisdiction to apply international law on a regular base. This Transitional Jurisdiction relates to international law in the same way that most hybrid criminal tribunals do, and binds the domestic application of the law to the universal values of human rights. The unique legal nature of the SJP forces us to rethink the rigidity of the traditional system of law to favor a more dynamic and pluralist understanding of justice, often framed as postnational. This research highlights the necessity to understand the hermeneutics of transitional justice beyond the context of State sovereignty, and from the broader vision of the progressive internationalization of constitutional law.

High Levels of IL-8 and MCP-1 in Cerebrospinal Fluid of COVID-19 Patients with Cerebrovascular Disease

        Guartazaca-Guerrero Sebastián,Rodríguez-Morales Jahir,Rizo-Téllez Salma A.,Solleiro-Villavicencio Helena,Hernández-Valencia Aldo F.,Carrillo-Ruiz José Damián,Escobedo Galileo,Méndez-García Lucía A. 한국뇌신경과학회 2021 Experimental Neurobiology Vol.30 No.3

The coronavirus family has tropism for the Central Nervous System (CNS), however, there is no solid evidence demonstrating that the neurological effects of COVID-19 result from direct viral infection or systemic inflammation. The goals of this study were to examine the cytokine profile and the presence of SARS-CoV-2 messenger ribonucleic acid (mRNA) in cerebrospinal fluids (CSF) from two patients with cerebrovascular disease and COVID-19. Although the SARS-CoV-2 mRNA was not detected in CSF of both patients, we found abnormally high levels of numerous proinflammatory cytokines and chemokines, especially IL-8 and MCP-1. Since these chemokines mediate activation and recruitment of neutrophils, monocytes, and macrophages, it is feasible that cerebrovascular disease related-neuroinflammation found in both patients results from an exacerbated inflammatory response instead of SARS-CoV-2 direct invasion to CNS. These results suggest that neuroinflammation plays a key role in cerebrovascular disease and COVID-19.

      • Experimental analysis of the aerodynamic characteristics of a rectangular 5:1 cylinder using POD

        Juan A. Cárdenas-Rondón,Mikel Ogueta-Gutiérrez,Sebastián Franchini,Omar Gómez-Ortega 한국풍공학회 2022 Wind and Structures, An International Journal (WAS Vol.34 No.1

Following the BARC initiative, wind tunnel measurements have been performed on a 5:1 rectangular cylinder. Pressure distribution has been measured in several sections, checking the two-dimensionality of the flow around the model. Mean values compare well with previous data. These measurements have been processed using the standard Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD) and the snapshot POD to obtain phase-resolved cycles. This decomposition has been used to analyze the characteristics of the flow around the cylinder, in particular, the behavior of the recirculation bubble in the upper/lower surfaces. The effect of the angle of attack, the turbulence intensity and the Reynolds number has been studied. First and second modes extracted from POD have been found to be related to the reattachment of the flow in the upper surface. Increasing the angle of attack is related to a delay in the reattachment position, while an increase in turbulence intensity makes the reattachment point to move towards the windward face.

Assessment of Austenite Static Recrystallization and Grain Size Evolution during Multipass Hot Rolling of a Niobium-Microalloyed Steel

        Manuel Gómez,Lucía Rancel,Sebastián F. Medina 대한금속·재료학회 2009 METALS AND MATERIALS International Vol.15 No.4

Double-deformation isothermal tests and multipass continuous-cooling hot torsion tests were used to study the evolution of austenite microstructures during isothermal and non-isothermal hot deformation of an Nb microalloyed steel. These tests, coupled with microstructural characterization, have verified that the no-recrystallization temperature (Tnr) corresponds roughly to the temperature where recrystallization starts to be incomplete during rolling. An accurate method to estimate the recrystallized fraction during hot rolling based on stress-strain data, and which does not require metallographic studies, is proposed. The results of this method have been successfully compared to metallographic measurements, the values of non-isothermal fractional softening and the accumulated stress measured in the plots of mean flow stress (MFS) versus the inverse of temperature. A remarkable austenite grain refinement occurs in the first hot rolling passes after reheating. The correlation of isothermal and continuous cooling tests is better understood if the effect of grain size on recrystallization and precipitation is taken into account. Seasonal Variations in Sex Steroids in a Young Male Population and Their Relationship with Plasma Levels of Vitamin D

Costanzo Pablo René,Suárez Sebastián Matías,Kozak Andrea Elina,Knoblovits Pablo 대한남성과학회 2022 The World Journal of Men's Health Vol.40 No.2

Purpose:Purpose: Vitamin D (VD) acts on sperm motility, capacitation and survival but its role in steroidogenesis is less clear. Aims: To analyze seasonal variations in sex steroids and VD in a healthy male population. Materials and Methods:Materials and Methods: Twenty-nine healthy males, 34.0±4.8 years were included. Blood collection in winter (W) and sum-mer (S) was performed to measure: 25OHD, total testosterone (TT), free testosterone (FT), estradiol (E2), luteinizing hormone (LH), and sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG). Testosterone/estradiol (T/E2) ratio was calculated. Results:Results: In W, lower levels of 25OHD: 18.8±7.2 ng/mL vs. 38.8±11.9 ng/mL (p<0.0001) and LH: 3.5±1.2 mU/mL vs. 3.9±1.5 mU/mL (p=0.05), and higher levels of TT: 501.9±157.7 ng/dL vs. 405.0±128.0 ng/dL (p=0.0003), FT: 11.8±4.1 ng/dL vs. 10.2±3.7 ng/dL (p=0.017), SHBG: 28.5±10.9 nmol/L vs. 23.6±7.9 nmol/L (p=0.002) and T/E2 ratio: 30.7±19.7 ng/dL/pg/mL vs. 17.3±3.6 ng/dL/pg/mL (p=0.0015) with no variation in E2 levels were observed. A positive correlation between 25OHD and E2 (r=0.28, p=0.04) and negative correlations between 25OHD and TT (r=-0.27, p=0.049), 25OHD and FT (r=-0.32, p=0.01), and 25OHD and T/E2 (r=-0.44, p=0.0008) were found. Conclusions:Conclusions: In healthy young male population, seasonal variations were observed in 25OHD and LH levels (higher in S) and in TT, FT, SHBG levels, and T/E2 (higher in W). Lower values of TT and FT in S are accompanied by higher levels of LH, which rules out a central mechanism for lowering testosterone. 25OHD negatively correlated with TT, FT, and T/E2 and posi-tively correlated with E2, suggesting a relationship between VD status and changes in gonadal steroids.

Influence of pH on the Culture of Scenedesmus obliquus in Olive-mill Wastewater

Gassan Hodaifa,Ma. Eugenia Martínez,Sebastián Sánchez 한국생물공학회 2009 Biotechnology and Bioprocess Engineering Vol.14 No.6

Olive-mill wastewater (OMW), an agro-industrial by-product from olive-oil milling (with the three-phase extraction method), was used experimentally as 5% (v/v) of the medium to culture Scenedesmus obliquus CCAP 276/3A. The characterization of the wastewater indicated a nitrogen deficiency. The highest specific growth rate of S.obliquus μm 0.022 h−1 was found when the medium was maintained at a constant pH value of 7.0. The biomass productivity, Pb was determined by the influence of pH on the speciation of the dissolved CO2. The greatest elimination of BOD5 occurred at extreme pH values. The protein and chlorophyll contents presented a maximum value close to pH = 7.0. The highest crude-protein content in the biomass was 25.6%. The polyunsaturated and essential fatty acids presented a clear trend to increase with the pH, at pH 9.0, representing 26.2 and 19.4%, respectively, of the total fattyacid content of the biomass Olive-mill wastewater (OMW), an agro-industrial by-product from olive-oil milling (with the three-phase extraction method), was used experimentally as 5% (v/v) of the medium to culture Scenedesmus obliquus CCAP 276/3A.
