Solubilization of some acid-base indicators such as bromophenol blue and methyl red were investigated in aqueous micellar solutions by visible spectrophotometric method. The intrinsic dissociation constants on bulk solution, pKa' of some acid-base indicators were influenced by surfactant and related with charge characters of acid-base indicators and surfactants.

The critical micelle concentration (??) in a micellar state of the mixed surfactant systems of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) with cetylpyridinium bromide(CPB) and dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide (DTAB) were determined at 25℃ as a function of the overall mole fraction of CTAB by the use of surface tension method. CMC values of pure CTAB, CPB, and DTAB were 9.95×10-4 M, ?? M, and ?? M, respectively. Interaction parameterβ value of CPB-CTAB mixture was evaluated as -1.3. In case of DTAB-CTAB mixture, constancy in β value was not obtained over all composition of the mixture.

The minima were found in the surface tension curve of commercial sodium dodecyl sulfates against its concentration. It couldn't be found minimum in the concentration - surface tension curve for the SDS, with its purity of more than 99%, produced by Fluka Chemical Co. Its CMC, surface excess, and surface tension above CMC were 7.86×10-2 M, 3.3×10-6 mol/m2, and 40.6 mN/m, respectively. These were in agreement with the previous results. Surface tension curves were shown for a series of SDS solutions containing dodecanol(DD) in the range of 0.1∼5.9%(W/W). As the amount of DD increased, the surface tensiion of SDS reduced and the concentration at the minimum of surface tension curve decreased. It might be reasonable that the CMC for the SDS solutioin containing DD is taken as the concentration at the minimum of surface tension curve.

Home-built program was developed for the calculation of the interaction parameters for the mixed surfactant systems using a commercial software, Mathcad. The program was applied to the mixed surfactant systems which were published already, and gave the same values as the previous results. The program might be able to show the best averaged interaction parameters for the mixtures of surfactants through the process iteratively.

The average microenvironmental polarity of 9-MA which was solubilized in a micellar solution was estimated by UV spectroscopic characteristics sensitive to the polarity of solvent. When 9-MA was solubilized in aqueous CTAB, SDS, and Brij 35 solutions, its microenvironmental polarity parameter showed little dependence on the ionic properties of the micelles. The average microenvironmental polarity of 9-MA was similar to the polarity of mixed solvents between 50%(W/W) methanol-water mixture and 40%(w/w) methanol-water mixture. It was found that the greater part of 9-MA might be distributed at the surface of micelles when it was solubilized in aqueous micellar solutions.

This work has been summarized the master formulas for two center overlap integrals involving l bs> orbitals(b=1,2,3······) in previous our papers. The simple formulas for them are listed in Table 2. The master formulas for two center overlap integrals involving l bs> orbitals can more easily be derived if we use the simple formulas represented in this work.

It is performed to derive the master formulas for two center overlap integrals and the dipole moment matrix elements between pairs of the identical Slater type atomic orbitals (n=3,5) by the expansion method for spherical harmonics. The numerical values of two center overlap integrals and the dipole moment matrix elements evaluated by this method are compared with those of Mulliken's overlap method and the transformation method of the dipole moment matrix elements into overlap integrals for Mulliken, respectively. The result by two methods are exactly in agreement with each other.

Micellization of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and n-alkylpolyoxy-ethylene cetylether [?? : Brij 58 (where m=20) ] was investigated using Rubingh's theory. The mixed CMCs of the binary surfactant mixtures to be studied showed nonideal behavior. Interaction parameter β between CTAB and ?? (where m=20) was determined iteratively using Mathcad program. Surfactant composition in the micelles were calculated and also activity coefficients of two surfactants were presented.
