      • Mobile Communications : New Technology and Old Archetypes

Harmeet Sawhney 한국방송학회 2004 한국방송학회 세미나 및 보고서 Vol.- No.-

Over the last three decades there has been a voluminous output of research on new technologies. It has, however, largely stayed at the descriptive level because soon after we have mapped out and described a new technology yet another one appears on the horizon and drawn by its newness we move our attention. Today, our attention is moving, for good reasons, towards mobile technologies. However, in our rush to study the ""new"" new technology we should not get caught in the same cycle. One way to raise our thinking to a higher conceptual plane is to revisit research on ""old"" new technologies and look for parallels at increasingly higher levels of abstraction. In this spirit, this paper compares and contrasts DoCo Mo's I-Mode system with Minitel, the cynosure of the videotex era. The analysis suggests that the architecture of I-Mode resembles that of the ""controlled-closed"" Minitel rather than of ""uncontrolled-open"" Internet. It argues that I-Mode is more of a mobile Minitel than mobile Internet. This shift in metaphor is important because I-Mode has been embraced as the wireless avatar of the Internet in some quarters. The paper cautions us against raising I-Mode to the level of an exemplar lest it curtail our imagination about other alternative architectures for mobile Internet.

Contemplating charge transport by modeling of DNA nucleobases based nano structures

Rajan Vohra,Ravinder Singh Sawhney,Kunwar Partap Singh 한국물리학회 2020 Current Applied Physics Vol.20 No.5

Electrical charge transport through two basic strands Thymine and Adenine of DNA has been analyzed using jellium model approach. The FFT-2D computations have been performed for semi empirical Extended Huckel Theory using Atomistix Tool kit to contemplate the charge transport metrics like current and conductance. We have scrutinized the behavior of the devices in the range of -2 V–2 V for a step size of 0.2 V. A prominent observation is the drop in HLGs of Adenine and Thymine, when working as device as compared to their intrinsic values and this is comparative more visible in case of Adenine. The current in the thymine based device exhibit linear increase with voltage in spite of having low conductance. Further the broader transmission peaks represent the strong coupling of electrodes to the scattering molecule (Thymine). The NDR effect of Adenine based device for higher bias can be utilized in various future electronics applications.

      • Design of fullerene-based biomarker for detection of lead impurities

        Milanpreet Kaur,Ravinder Singh Sawhney,Derick Engles,Rupan Preet Kaur 한국통신학회 2016 ICT Express Vol.2 No.4

The fullerene-based molecular junction in a device configured for sensor applications in medical diagnostics has been evaluated in this study. The presence of highly carcinogenic agents such as lead is detected using this molecular device, which is configured and investigated using extended Hückel theory (EHT) and the non-equilibrium Green’s function. The electrical parameters that we calculated can be employed to determine the concentration of lead impurities by evaluating its transmission coefficients and molecular orbitals. Our results suggests that the alignment of current increases with increasing impurity level (i.e., of 6, 12, and 18 lead atoms), thus indicating sensor characteristics.

Sentiment analysis of demonetization of 500 & 1000 rupee banknotes by Indian government

        Prabhsimran Singh,Ravinder Singh Sawhney,Karanjeet Singh Kahlon 한국통신학회 2018 ICT Express Vol.4 No.3

All government policies have a down side and the burden of the down side is often felt only by the common man. This paper considers one such government policy, the demonetization of high denomination currency by the Indian government that took effect midnight on November 8, 2016. In this paper, we have minutely analyzed this government policy from the common person’s perspective by using the concept of sentiment analysis and taking Twitter as a tool. In addition to performing a nation-wide analysis, we have also performed state-wide analysis using geolocation to further elucidate the reasons of displeasure among people of respective states.

      • FISCAL DEFICITS AND ECONOMIC GROWTH IN PORTUGAL: A LONG-TERM PERSPECTIVE

Dang T Tran,Bansi Sawhney People&Global Business Association 2003 Global Business and Finance Review Vol.8 No.2

A time series approach which includes unit root with structural breaks, cointegration, and Granger causality is applied to a long-run economic series for Portugal to study the long-term relationship between fiscal deficits and economic growth. Output and fiscal deficits, whether measured in amounts or as percentages of output, contain unit roots but are not cointegrated. Structural changes at various break dates do not affect their unit root process. Granger-causality analysis applied to the first difference of these variables yields results that are mixed Different time periods and different measures of fiscal deficits support different theoretical views. For the period up to 1926, the neoclassical view apparently holds: growth in deficits affects economic growth negatively. For the period after 1926, however, the Keynesian view is corroborated: growing government deficits have positive effects on economic growth. The data fail to support the Ricardian equivalence view for any time period using any of the two deficit measures.

Decision Making Method to Select Team Members Applying Personnel Behavior Based Lean Model

        Jonnatan Aviles-Gonzalez,Neale R. Smith,Rupy Sawhney 대한산업공학회 2016 Industrial Engineeering & Management Systems Vol.15 No.3

Design of personnel teams has been studied from diverse perspectives; the most common are the people and systems requirements perspectives. All these point of view are linked, which is the reason why it is necessary to study them simultaneously. Considering this gap, a decision making model is developed based on factors, models, and requirements mentioned in the literature. The model is applied to a real case. The findings indicate that the Personnel Behavior Based Lean model (PBBL) can be converted into a decision making model for the selection of team members. The study is focused not only on the individual candidates’ knowledge, skills, and aptitudes, but also on how the model considers the company requirements, conflicts, and the importance of each person to the project.

Smart Phone Applications as a Source of Information on Stroke

        Divyanshu Dubey,Amod Amritphale,Anshudha Sawhney,Nupur Amritphale,Pradeep Dubey,Ambarish Pandey 대한뇌졸중학회 2014 Journal of stroke Vol.16 No.2

Background and Purpose: Smartphone applications have been increasingly identified as a novel platform for dissemination of healthcare related information. However, there have been no studies done to evaluate the availability and content of stroke related apps. Purpose: This study aims to identify and analyze stroke-related applications available on the Apple iTunes and Android Google Play Store. Methods: The Apple iTunes store and Android Google Play Store were searched for stroke-related applications on July 27, 2013 using keywords: stroke, brain attack, intracranial hem-orrhage, subarachnoid hemorrhage, cerebral infarction. The content of the applications was analyzed by two independent investigators. Results: A total of 93 relevant applications (46.2% android and 53.8% iPhone) were identified of which 47.3% were available free of cost. 92% of apps were identified as useful by users and over 60% had scientifically valid information. There is a significant participation of healthcare agencies in dissemination of stroke related information through apps with 47.3% apps being uploaded by them. Over half of all stroke related apps were aimed towards health care workers (51.6%), 75% of which could be utilized as bedside tools for patient care and remainder had information related to recent research advances. The difference in scientific validity between the apps aimed at general population versus healthcare professionals was statistically significant (P<0.01). There was no statistical association between cost of app and scientific validity or usefulness. Conclusions: Smartphone apps are a significant source of information related to stroke. An increasing participation of healthcare agencies should be encouraged to promote dissemination of scientifically valid information.

      • Non-invasive cancer detection using molecular device based on aromatic molecules

        Rupan Preet Kaur,Ravinder Singh Sawhney,Derick Engles,Milanpreet Kaur 한국통신학회 2016 ICT Express Vol.2 No.4

Major advances in the molecular diagnostics of screening tissue and blood samples have fueled the search for biomarkers and diagnostic nanosensors that can detect abnormalities early in their development cycles. In this paper, we propose an aromatic molecular junction-based biomarker that can trace the concentration of lead in any live sample. A nanomolecular device based on an anthracenedithiol molecule was modeled. Its electrical transport attributes were computed using a semi-empirical extended Huckel theory combined with non-equilibrium Green’s function formalism. We observed that the current and conductance assay had prominent changes when the molecular junction device was exposed to variant concentrations of lead. Based on our results, we propose aromatic molecular junction-based biomarkers that can detect even minor adulterations of lead when plied at operating voltage range.
