Using Problem-Based Learning to Meet Globalized Education Ideals

Technological innovation, the quick pace of change, and globalization have revolutionized our lives and have prompted a call for radical change in the way we educate in universities. This call has been echoed around the world and educators are attempting to respond. A featured theme in the global education reform movement involves a focus on developing students' thinking abilities. Evolved thinking abilities are seen as ·key to navigating effectively the complex personal, civic, and professional dimensions of the new era, and as necessary for individuals, corporations, and societies to thrive in the new global economy. This article highlights the central role that enhanced thinking abilities (especially problem solving) play in the global reform movement, and demonstrates the relevance of Problem-Based Learning (PBL) as an instructional vehicle for achie- ving these globalized education outcomes.
