Patterns of Market Polarization and Market Matching in the Korean Film Industry

We attempt to investigate whether there are patterns of market polarization and market matching in the Korean film industry. We analyze 684 Korean domestic movies released between 1990 and 2000. Korea’s motion picture business is stratified by film productivity. An elite group of directors, composers, and cinematographers tend to dominate the Korean film industry. Many filmmakers make their debut, but become extinct after participating in just one film. Productive filmmakers tend to collaborate with other prolific filmmakers while less productive filmmakers are likely to work with other low-productive filmmakers. The findings confirm that the Korean movie industry, similar to Hollywood, recurrently generates patterns of market polarization and market matching mainly due to high degrees of risk and uncertainty. Thus, the two old adages, “the rich get richer while the poor get poorer” and “birds of a feather flock together,” prove as true in the movie industry.
An Alternative Presentation of the Second Law of Thermodynamics

<P>We present an elementary, but still quite rigorous derivation of the Clausius inequality, which sheds a new perspective on the second law. Unlike the classical approach, our derivation does not employ the Carnot cycle. The Clausius inequality follows in a straightforward way from the first law and thermodynamic stability conditions without invoking the Clausius or the Kelvin–Planck statement of the second law. The background knowledge required for this article is the same as that for the usual textbook presentation of the second law. A Variant of the Brillouin-Wigner Perturbation Theory with Epstein-Nesbet Partitioning

We present an elementary pedagogical derivation of the Brillouin-Wigner and the Rayleigh-Schr$\ddot{o}$dinger perturbation theories with Epstein-Nesbet partitioning. A variant of the Brillouin-Wigner perturbation theory is also introduced, which can be easily extended to the quasi-degenerate case. A main advantage of the new theory is that the computing time required for obtaining the successive higher-order results is minimal after the third-order calculation. We illustrate the accuracy of the new perturbation theory for some simple model systems like the perturbed harmonic oscillator and the particle in a box.

최근 물품이 고적재되어 있는 랙크식 창고에서의 화재가 자주 발생하고 있으며, 화재 발생시 현재의 소방설비로는 화재를 초기에 진압하는 것이 불가능하다. 본 논문에서는 랙크식 창고에서의 화재를 초기에 소화할 수 있는 집중 살수 방식의 인랙 스프링클러 헤드 제작과 더불어 이에 대한 실증 실험을 통하여 새로운 시스템의 기본 성능을 제안한다. 실험결과 집중 살수 방식의 인랙 스프링클러가 가져야 할 시스템 및 성능은 구역별로 나누어 수직 방향으로 일제 살수 방식으로 이루어져야 하며, 헤드의 K값은 115 이상이고 분사각도는 살수 각도는 120°∼135° 이내로 제한되어야 한다. 또한 헤드는 화재가 발생한 시점에서 4분 30초 이내에 물을 분사하여야 하며, 헤드간의 수평 거리는 2.4 m 이내이고 복도 방향에도 동일한 간격으로 서로 엇갈리게 설치하여야 하고, 수직 거리는 랙의 단수인 2.5 m 이내에 설치하여야 한다. 적재물 가운데 설치되는 인랙 스프링클러 헤드는 송기공간의 가운데 위치하도록 설치하여야 한다. In recent years, fires have frequently occurred in rack-type warehouses in which goods are vertically loaded. In the event of a fire, extinguishing operations using the present fire protection facilities are highly ineffective. The objective of this study was to satisfy the conditions required for fire extinguishing, rather than those for fire control. The conclusions obtained from the results of fire experiments were as follows: fire extinguishment should be performed by deluge-type sprinkler systems by zoning the regions into vertical sections; the K factor of the in-rack sprinkler heads should be 115 or more, and the spray angle should be limited to 130° or less; the sprinkler head should spray water within 4 min and 30 s from the time of fire ignition; the horizontal distance between the in-rack sprinkler heads should be smaller than 2.4 m; the vertical distance of in-rack sprinkler head should be smaller than 2.5 m of the rack height; and the in-rack sprinkler heads should be installed in the center of the flue space.
A Brownian Dynamics Method for Systems of Nonspherical Brownian Particles

A Brownian dynamics method is proposed for simulating the coupled translational and rotational diffusive motions of nonspherical Brownian particles. Results of test simulations to assess the accuracy of the algorithm are presented.
Effects of Light Intensity on the Steady-State Fluorescence Quenching Kinetics

Effects of light intensity on the steady-state fluorescence quenching kinetics are examined for general cases where the bimolecular quenching can occur via long-range energy transfer processes and the potential of mean force between the energy donor and acceptor molecules is not negligible. Approximate analytic expressions are derived for the steady-state quenching rate constant and for the ratio of the steady-state intensity of unquenched to quenched fluorescence. The analytic results are compared with the exact results obtained from numerical analysis and the results of conventional theories.

A general perturbation series solution of the Smoluchowski equation is applied to investigate the rate of recombination and the remaining probability of a pair of particles in liquids. The radiative boundary condition is employed and the convergence of the perturbation series is analyzed in terms of a convergene factor in time domain. The upper bound to the error introduced by the n-th order perturbation scheme is also evaluated. The long time behaviors of the rate of recombination and the remaining probability are found to be expressed in closed forms if the perturbation series is convergent. A new and efficient method of purely numerical integration of the Smoluchowski equation is proposed and its results are compared with those obtained by the perturbation method. For the two cases where the interaction between the particles is given by (i) the Coulomb potential and (ii) the shielded Coulomb potential, the agreement between the two results is found to be excellent.
