        오스틴과 공리주의적 도덕 개혁

        Several critics argue that Persuasion is a story about the moral reform of gentry society by the rising naval group. However, they often fail to explain the content of the moral reform. The moral reform can be explained in connection with utilitarianism, the dominant moral discourse of the time. In the novel, utility is proposed as the opposite moral concept o f vanity, the main cause of social corruption. Anne epitomizes the moral concept of utility by using her education to help others. She also reveals her awareness of the qualitative difference between Musgrove sisters' edu cation and hers. Absorbing influences of both the Enlightenment and romanticism, Aus ten's novel bridges the transformation of utilitarian morality from the late 18th-century to the late 19th-century Britain. Transcending the social barr ier of class distinction, Anne marries Captain Wentworth. This marriage i s possible because of their shared utilitarian morality. In contrast with th e rural gentry, naval officers show not only the rational aspect of utility, but also the harmony between reason and emotion. These are the main c omponents of John Stuart Mill's qualitative utilitarianism. He tries to ove rcome the defects of Jeremy Bentham's quantitative utilitarianism by cons idering qualitative as well as quantitative differences of utility. Mill also attempts to harmonize reason and emotion in his qualitative utilitarianism by synthesizing the influences of Bentham and Coleridge. It can be said that as almost contemporaries Austen and Mill shared the moral concerns of the period.

        멀티미디어 데이타의 검색은 일반 텍스트를 기본으로 하는 데이타의 검색 방법과는 비교가 되지 않을 정도로 복잡하고 어려운 분야이다. 특히 멀티미디어 데이터는 비정형적이며 길이가 길고 가변적인 특성을 갖는다. 이와같은 문제를 해결하기 위하여 본 논문에서는 객체 지향 데이타 모델을 이용해 멀티미디어 데이타 지원이 가능한 모델을 제안하였으며, 제안된 데이타 모델을 기본으로 멀티미디어 데이타 검색을 위한 다중키 검색 방법을 제안하였다.

        The purpose of this study is to analyze the collapse charactreristics of widely used spot welded section members coating Y1000 which have the biggest energy absorbing capacity in a front-end collision and to develop an analysis method for acquiring exact collapse loads, deformation modes and optimal damping structure of energy absorption. The sections were tested on quasi-static and impact loads. Specimens with two type thickness, width ratio and spot weld pitch on the flange have been tested in impact velocities(6.73m/sec and 7.54m/sec) which imitate a real-life car collision. As a result, it was developed the system for acquiring impact energy absorbing characteristics of structure united thin-wall members and damping materials.

      • 통합물관리와 농어업용 지하수의 역할

        통합물관리 정책이 실행되면서, 물관리는 유역단위로 수질과 수량을 통합 관리하고, 물 순환 과정에서 물에 영향을 주는 사항을 종합적으로 고려해서 관리하게 된다. 현재의 논의에서는 물관리 일원화에 정부조직 차원의 대상에 농어업용수는 계량화가 힘들고 정확한 통계가 없으며 관리 또한 어려워 제외되어 있다. 그러나, 국가 수자원 이용량 중 농어업용수가 차지하는 비중(41%)을 고려할 때 농어업용수를 제외하고 통합물관리의 최종 목표를 달성하기란 어렵다. 같은 맥락으로 지표수와 지하수를 분리해서 관리하는 것 또한 지하수와 지표수의 상호 작용을 고려할 때 완전한 관리에 어려움이 있을 것이다. 일례로, 미국 전역 54개 하천의 지하수 유입량은 하천 유량의 14∼90%(Winter et al., 1998), 지하수의 질산성질소 부하 기여율은 37%이상으로 보고된 바 있다(Dubrovsky et al., 2010). 국내의 경우, 4대강 하천유량의 약 62∼86%는 지하수의 기저유출에 기인하고(Lee et al., 2017), 국내 254개 하천관측망 자료 분석 결과 약 28∼89%(Jung et al., 2016)에 이르며, 농업유역에서 기저유출에 의한 질산성질소 부하량도 22∼41%에 이른다(Kim et al., 2015). 결과적으로 유역기반의 물관리를 종합적으로 이루기 위해서는 통합물관리 정책에 농어업용수의 편입, 지표수와 지하수를 통합하여 관리하는 정책이 필요하다. 향후 농어업용수가 포함된 통합물관리 정책이 본격적으로 시행되면, 기존의 지표수 공급에서 소외된 농어촌지역의 4계절 용수수요 평가, 작물 생육단계에 따른 작부체계를 이용한 필요수량의 정량적 평가 기반하천변 시설재배단지 용수수요 평가, 농지범용화에 따른 논 관개기간이외에 용수수요 평가가 이루어져야 한다. 그리고 농업 작물별로 구성된 작목반을 포함한 권역별 민관연 기반 물 사용자협회를 구성하여 수요자 중심의 지하수 공급체계를 구축하는 방안을 적극적으로 검토할 필요가 있다. 또한 질산성질소 등 지하수 오염에 따른 하천수의 수질에 대한 평가 체계를 구축할 필요가 있다. 이에 농림축산식품부와 한국농어촌공사는 2001년부터 시행 중인 농어촌지역 대상 지하수자원관리사업을 통합물관리 정책과 지하수-지표수 연계관리에 발맞추어 사업을 고도화하고, 농어업용 지하수시설을 현행화 하며, 농어촌지하수 관측망을 이용한 다양한 해석(농업가뭄 분석, 농업용수 공급가능량 산정 등)으로 미래 지하수 총량 변화를 평가할 계획이다. 또한 지하수 수량, 수질의 과학를 위한 농업용 공공관정 이용량 모니터링을 통한 실이용량 분석, IoT 기반 관정가동 및 제어, 모니터링 등 SMART 관리 시스템을 구축하여 농어촌지역의 지하수 수량과 수질을 동시에 관리하여 국가 차원의 통합물관리 계획에 기여하고자 한다.

      • Structural and functional insights into (S)-ureidoglycine aminohydrolase, a key enzyme of nitrogen utilization

        The ureide pathway has recently been identified as the metabolic route of purine catabolism in plants and some bacteria. In this pathway, uric acid, which is a major product of the early stage of purine catabolism, is degraded into glyoxylate and ammonia via stepwise reactions of seven different enzymes. Therefore, the pathway has a possible physiological role in mobilization of purine ring nitrogen for further assimilation. (S)-Ureidoglycine aminohydrolase enzyme converts (S)-ureidoglycine into (S)-ureidoglycolate and ammonia, providing the final substrate to the pathway. Here, we report a structural and functional analysis of this enzyme from Arabidopsis thaliana (AtUGlyAH). The crystal structure of AtUGlyAH in the apo-form shows a monomer structure in the bi-cupin fold of the β-barrel and an octameric functional unit, as well as an Mn2+ ion binding site. The structure of AtUGlyAH in complex with (S)-ureidoglycine revealed that the Mn2+ ion acts as a molecular anchor to bind (S)-ureidoglycine and its binding mode dictates the enantioselectivity of the reaction. Further kinetic analysis characterized the functional roles of the active site residues, including the Mn2+ ion binding site and residues in the vicinity of (S)-ureidoglycine. These analyses provide molecular insights into the structure of the enzyme and its possible catalytic mechanism.

      • Structural and Functional Insights into Enzymes in Nitrogen Remobilization Pathway

        Nitrogen is an essential nutrient in plants including many crops. The storage and remobilization of nitrogen constitutes the main metabolic process for growth and development of plants. Ureide pathway is the lately characterized metabolic route for purine degradation and is conserved in plants, as well as some bacteria and fungi. The catabolic pathway catalyzes in a stepwise manner a conversion of N-rich uric acid into glyoxylate, with the release of ammonia, and plays a pivotal role in the storage and recovery of nitrogen from metabolites. In Next Generation BioGreen21 project, we aim to understand structural and functional features of enzymes involved in this nitrogen recycling pathway, by using genes from Arabidopsis thaliana. In this study, we report our current progress on this project including two different enzymes; ureidoglycine aminohydrolase (UGlyAH), and ureidoglycolate amidohydrolase (UAH). In UGlyAH, the metal-binding site plays a crucial role in catalysis, with a release of ammonia. We were able to characterize catalytic residues in the active site and provides a detailed view of a metal-dependent enzyme mechanism. Recently, we were able to characterize structural properties of UAH. Based on our analysis, we are performing enzymatic analysis to identify functional aspects of the enzyme. Taken together, these studies would provide a novel functional feature of the enzymes involved in the nitrogen recycling pathway and could serve as a framework to develop crops with an enhanced N-efficiency.

        콘래드의 양가적 제국주의 비판

        Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness has been regarded as a canonical anti-imperialist British novella. However, this status of honor is challenged by Chinua Achebe's argument that it is racist. This is an interesting claim that Conrad is at once anti-imperialist and racist. Achebe criticzes Conrad as a racist who has neither the understanding of nor the will to understand Africans. According to Achebe, when Conrad portrays Africans as an indistinguishable group of bodies without any human language, he deprives them of humanity as well as individuality. They have no existence independent of Africa; furthermore, they exis only as an "image" of the other, a "background" for and the "antithesis" of European imperialists. In fact, Achebe's criticism shows its nationalist assumption that privileges Africa over Europe. As a kind of antidote to imperialism, it simply reverses the problematic hierarchy of European superiority. Achebe's seemingly interesting criticism has several serious flaws. First of all, it is not fully supported by an actual analysis of the novella itself. Moreover, it is anachronistic in that it criticizes the late 19th-century novella from the perspective of the late 20th century. If the novella is properly located in its own historical situation, it is not difficult to find the novella's characteristic of its age, fin-de-sie`cle nihilism. Read from this historical perspective, Heart of Darkness clearly shows that Conrad was completely disillusioned with European civilization at the turn of the century. Because of its nihilistic tendency, the novella uses the logic of a neither/nor paradox, by not choosing either European racism or African nationalism. Achebe's criticism also presupposes the possibility of separating imperialism from racism. However, it is next to impossible to separate them because racism insists on the European racial superiority mainly in terms of cultural superiority, the progress in civilization, and culture vs barbarism. The novella clearly criticizes European imperialism by adopting the anti-racist language. The logic of paradox also enables the novella effectively to undermine the acclaimed hierarchy of racism, the civilizing process, and its enlightenment and utilitarian implications. Ultimately, this nihilistic tendency causes Conrad to take an 'ambivalent' attitude toward imperialism and racism when there is no alternative in sight.

        Real-Time Fault Identification System for a Retrofitted Ultra-Precision CNC Machine from Equipment's Power Consumption Data: A Case Study of an Implementation

        Ability to detect faults in manufacturing machines have become crucial in the era of Smart Manufacturing to enable cost savings from erratic downtimes, in an effort towards Green Manufacturing. The power consumption data provides myriad of information that would facilitate condition monitoring of manufacturing machines. In this work, we retrofit an ultra-precision CNC machine using an inexpensive power meter. The data collected from the power meter were streamed in real-time to Amazon Web Services (AWS) servers using industry standard Message Query Telemetry Transport (MQTT) protocol. The error identification study was carried out in two-folds, we first identify if the error has occurred followed by classifying the type of controller error. The study also develops anomaly detection models to identify normal operating condition of the machine from the anomalous error states. Anomaly detection was particularly favorable for manufacturing machines as it requires data only from the normal operating conditions of the machine. The developed models performed with macro F1-Score of 0.9971 ± 0.0012 and 0.9974 ± 0.0018 for binary and multiclass classification respectively. The anomaly detection models were able to identify the anomalous data instances with an average accuracy of 95%. A feature importance study was then carried out to identify the most valuable feature for error identification. Finally, the trained models were containerized and hosted at AWS. The overarching goal of this project was to develop a complete inexpensive ML pipeline that would enable industries to detect operation anomalies in manufacturing machines just from the energy consumption data of the machine.
