Evaluation of a New Scoring System for Retinal Nerve Fiber Layer Photography Using HRA1 in 964 Eyes
Samin Hong,Jong Wook Moon,Seung Joo Ha,Chan Yun Kim,Gong Je Seong,Young Jae Hong 대한안과학회 2007 Korean Journal of Ophthalmology Vol.21 No.4
Purpose: To evaluate retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) defect by a new scoring system for RNFL photography using the Heidelberg Retina Angiograph 1 (HRA1). Methods: This retrospective study included 128 healthy eyes and 836 primary open-angle glaucoma eyes. The RNFL photography using HRA1 was interpreted using a new scoring system, and correlated with visual field indices of standard automated perimetry (SAP). Using the presence of RNFL defect, darkness, width, and location, we established the new scoring system of RNFL photos. Results: The mean RNFL defect score I in the early, moderate, severe, and control groups were 7.3, 9.2, 10.4, and 3.6, respectively. The mean RNFL defect score II in the early, moderate, severe, and control groups were 14.5, 28.5, 43.4, and 3.4, respectively. Correlations between the RNFL defect score II and the mean deviation of SAP was the strongest of the various combinations (r=-0.675, P<.001). Conclusions: Using a new scoring system, we propose a method for semi-quantitative interpretation of RNFL photographs. This scoring system may be helpful to distinguish between normal and glaucomatous eyes, and the score is associated with the severity of visual field loss.
The Traditional Pelangi Cloth of Malay Peninsula - A Study of Design and Identity -
Samin, Mohd. Azhar Bin The Costume Culture Association 2012 服飾文化硏究 Vol.20 No.2
Cultural products reflect a living culture and evolve despite being based on traditional forms only. It is known as traditional cultural expression that portray certain culture groups, materials, spiritual and creativity inspired from their living environment that characterize a society. The old Malay community had a close relationship with their surrounding and environment. Sensitivity towards the nature and surrounding environment moved them into creative people. In designing the local traditional textile, role of the motifs, design and product design play an important element in Malay cultural values. This reflects the symbols and philosophy of the arts and culture and thus becomes the identity of the Malay community, which in general practice their culture and tradition based on Islamic culture and religion. Kelantan and Terengganu are the pioneer states for most producers of Malay traditional textiles. In these states the Pelangi cloths, is one of the unique textiles use and inherited by the Malay communities. Base on history, the Malay rulers and Malay nobility used Pelangi cloth as complementing clothing and ornament in attending various ceremonies and customs in their daily life. In this paper will discuss the specific picture of Pelangi motifs, design and its usage in Malay society in Malay Peninsula through its identification aspect of representations. It shows that this textile represent certain insights of Malay customs and identity.

Background :Although a marked proportion of thalassemic patients acquire Torque teno virus (TTV) through blood transfusion, its clinical importance is unclear. This study was designed to investigate the clinical importance of TTV infection in thalassemic patients with and without hepatitis C virus (HCV) co-infection in Iran. Methods :In this case-control study, 107 thalassemic patients on chronic transfusion and 107 healthy individuals were selected. According to HCV and TTV infection status (detected by semi-nested PCR), patients were categorized into 4 groups: TTV and HCV negative, TTV positive, HCV positive, and TTV and HCV positive. Blood ferritin, alanine aminotransferase (ALT), and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) levels in these 4 groups were assessed. Results :Approximately half of the thalassemic patients (50.5%) and 27.1% of controls had TTV infection. Thalassemic patients had a greater chance of TTV infection compared to the control group with a sex-adjusted OR of 4.13 (95% CI=2.28-8.13). The increased levels of ALT, AST, and ferritin in the TTV and HCV-infected group were not significantly different from those in the TTV and HCV negative group. Co-infection with TTV and HCV did not significantly increase ALT, AST, and ferritin levels compared to infection with TTV alone. Conclusion :Although common in thalassemic patients, TTV infection appears to have a negligible role in increasing the severity of liver disease, even when co-infection with HCV occurs.
Isolation of primary mouse retinal ganglion cells using immunopanning-magnetic separation
Hong, Samin,Iizuka, Yoko,Kim, Chan Yun,Seong, Gong Je Molecular Vision 2012 Molecular vision Vol.18 No.-

Purpose

To establish an effective system for isolating primary retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) from newborn mice.

Methods

The retinas were separated from enucleated eyeballs of Crl:CD-1 mice on postnatal day 1 to 4. RGCs were purified using three different methods, including two-step immunopanning (TSI), direct magnetic separation (DMS), and immunopanning-magnetic separation (IMS). Harvested cells were maintained for 24 h in a defined medium and then examined with immunocytochemistry, western immunoblotting, and real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) for glial cell–specific glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) and amacrine cell-specific syntaxin 1.

Results

As determined with immunofluorescence staining, RGCs purified by TSI were sparsely mixed with GFAP-positive astrocytes, and RGCs isolated by DMS were frequently mixed with syntaxin 1-positive amacrine cells. However, RGCs collected by IMS were seldom contaminated by GFAP-positive or syntaxin 1-positive cells. On western immunoblots, TSI cells showed significant GFAP expression, and DMS cells showed apparent syntaxin 1 expression, but IMS cells did not. Results of the real-time RT–PCR showed a similar tendency to those of the immunocytochemistry and western immunoblots.

Conclusion

Primary mouse RGCs were highly purified by the IMS method, combining the benefits of the TSI and DMS methods. This isolation method may provide a good experimental system for studying glaucoma in vitro.
