A rare case of shingles after COVID-19 vaccine: is it a possible adverse effect?

Saliha Buşra Aksu,Güzin Zeren Öztürk 대한백신학회 2021 Clinical and Experimental Vaccine Research Vol.10 No.2

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) exhibit mild to moderate symptoms, whereas 15% of COVID-19 cases progress to pneumonia, some associated cutaneous findings are also reported as maculopapular eruptions, morbilliform rashes, urticaria, chickenpox-like lesions, and livedo reticularis. The inactivated COVID‐19 vaccines are authorized for use in some countries including Turkey. Here, we report an unusual case of varicella-zoster virus (VZV) reactivation in a 68-year-old male patient who was vaccinated against COVID-19. The patient presented to family medicine clinic with a stinging sensation and pain radiating from the right side of his chest to his back. Physical examination revealed multiple pinheaded vesicular lesions upon an erythematous base occupying an area on his right mammary region and back corresponding to T3–T5 dermatomes. He reported that he got his second dose of COVID-19 vaccine 5 days ago. As COVID 19 decreases the cell-mediated immunity, it could also increase the risk of herpes zoster (HZ). Although the exact reason remains unsolved, vaccine-induced immunomodulation caused by live attenuated vaccines and attenuated alloreactivity caused by inactivated vaccines may be responsible mechanisms for the reactivation of HZ. Epidemiological studies are needed to clarify the possible connection between vaccination and reactivation of herpesvirus infections.

      • Le sous-titrage du kdrama et ses limites pour la diffusion de la culture sud-coréenne en Algérie

Saliha BENAISSA 한국외국어대학교 통번역연구소 2018 한국외국어대학교 통번역연구소 학술대회 Vol.2018 No.10

In the past, when a man intends to do something, he used to consult wise men or counselors, and in their absence, he could at least consult his grandfather, his grandmother, or an old man from the village in order to benefit from their experience. Then, books appeared as a substitution that served to preserve knowledge over the years. Subsequently, internet emerged to replace all and to provide refuge to anyone who faces a problem or a difficulty. In this manner, traditional teaching was based on lectures presented by the teacher to students who deepen what they learn using references specified by the teacher. However, the development of technology nowadays has reversed the situation by changing teaching and converting the classroom into flipped classroom. Traditional teaching is not convenient for the new generation, as technology has become obligatory to ensure attractive and interesting educational environment to students and to motivate them to study and research. Considering the necessity of using flipped teaching in the digital era, I thought carefully to study its characteristics and the possibility of using it in consecutive interpreting; adopting a descriptive analytic methodology. Training on consecutive interpreting is necessary, as the planned hours in the annual program are not sufficient to enable the student to become a skilled interpreter who masters consecutive interpreting. Therefore, the student must practice many activities individually outside the classroom. In traditional teaching, consecutive interpreting teacher seeks, inside the classroom, to provide the student with principles of note taking and how to apply it in consecutive interpreting activities. However, in flipped classroom, the teacher seeks the same objective specifying different activities; some performed outside the classroom and others inside it. In addition, he adheres to make students learn the content outside via readings, videos, audio files…using computers or smart phones… the allotted time inside the classroom is devoted to concentrate on problem solving through discussion, interaction, practical training and answering students’ questions they have written while studying the content outside the classroom. With the appearance of flipped classroom, instructional videos were the first tools that have been used. Then, in order to cope with the widespread existence of tablets, phones and devices which appear and develop due to the progress of technology, as well as with its excessive use by students, the teacher became obliged to insert it in the flipped classroom and to use instructional digital games, instructional social networks, phone applications and programs, and instructional electronic platforms such as Khan Academy and interactive competitions like Kahoot program. In consecutive interpreting; phone applications, videos and interactive competitions can be used to teach principles of note taking. Furthermore, videos of political speeches for instance can be used to train the student on consecutive interpreting and how to apply principles of note taking once or many times on the same speech. Thus, in flipped learning, each student works according to his abilities and intelligence, besides he can learn the content when he is ready and concentrating as concentration is necessary in consecutive interpreting.

A Novel Approach of Admissibility for Singular Linear Continuous-time Fractional-order Systems

        Saliha Marir,Mohammed Chadli,Djillali Bouagada 제어·로봇·시스템학회 2017 International Journal of Control, Automation, and Vol.15 No.2

This paper deals with the admissibility problem of linear descriptor fractional-order systems having fractionalorders between 0 and 1. Necessary and sufficient admissibility conditions are obtained in terms of strict linearmatrix inequalities. Then an observer-based controller is designed for the closed-loop system to be admissible. Numericalexamples are presented to show the applicability of the proposed results.

Effectiveness of Pregabalin for Treatment of Burning Mouth Syndrome

Saliha Yeter Amasyalı,Aslı Akyol Gürses,Osman Nuri Aydın,Ali Akyol 대한정신약물학회 2019 CLINICAL PSYCHOPHARMACOLOGY AND NEUROSCIENCE Vol.17 No.1

Treatment of burning mouth syndrome (BMS) is challenging because there is no consensus regarding pharmalogical or nonpharmalogical therapies. The use of anticonvulsants is controversial. We present nine patients BMS who respond to pregabalin. They were diagnosed secondary BMS except two. Etiologic regulations were made firstly in patients with secondary BMS but symptoms did not decrease. We preferred pregabalin in all patients and got good results. Furthermore the addition of pregabalin to the treatment of two patients who did not respond adequately to duloxetine provided good results. We are only aware that pregabalin may reduce symptoms as a result of case reports. We believe that the diagnosis of pathologic etiology with appropriate diagnostic tests will result in better outcomes in treatment.

Effects of Elevated Temperature and Activation Solution Content on Microstructural and Mechanical Properties of Fly Ash-based Geopolymer

Ghizlane Moutaoukil,Saliha Alehyen,Isabel Sobrados,Amine el Mahdi Safhi 대한토목학회 2023 KSCE Journal of Civil Engineering Vol.27 No.6

This paper examined the effects of sodium silicate to sodium hydroxide (SS/SH) and fly ash (FA) to alkaline solution (FA/AS) ratios on the thermal and mechanical properties of FA-based geopolymers. To tackle this, two factors were varied including the SS/SH (1.5, 2.5, and 3.5) and the FA to the AS (1.5, 2.5 and 3.5). The elaborated nine specimens were characterized employing several techniques including FT-IR, XRD, 29Si and 27Al MAS NMR, and SEM analysis. The thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) was utilized to study the thermal stability of geopolymer specimens. The fire resistance of the geopolymer specimen was evaluated by weight change and residual compressive strength before and after being subjected to fire testing (up to 1,000°C). A decrease in the resistance recorded when heated at 200 and 400°C was related to the vaporization of free water was observed. Meanwhile, a gain in strength was achieved for the geopolymer samples after being subjected to 600 and 800°C which was attributed to the viscous flow of silicate-rich phases that eventually bridged the fissures or defects occurring during its solidification. Samples with a high FA/AS ratio showed good fire resistance after high-temperature exposure.

Phytochemical Screening, Phenolic Content, and Anti-Inflammatory Effect of Foeniculum vulgare Seed Extract

        Asma Cherbal,Mouna Bouabdallah,Saliha Hireche,Rachid Desdous,Mouna Benhalla 한국식품영양과학회 2023 Preventive Nutrition and Food Science Vol.28 No.2

Medicinal plants are promising sources of natural substances with biological functions and several drugs have been developed from traditional medicine. This study aimed to determine the chemical components of a hydromethanolic extract from Foeniculum vulgare seeds. Total phenolic, flavonoid, and flavonol contents were assessed, and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis was performed. To investigate the anti-inflammatory activity of F. vulgare seed hydromethanolic extract, its effects on protein denaturation, protease activity, membrane stabilization, and heat-induced hemolysis in red blood cells were evaluated in vitro. F. vulgare seed extract showed significant inhibition of protein denaturation (35.68±0.4%), protease activity (58.09±0.1%), and heat-induced hemolysis in red blood cells (9.67±0.3%) at concentrations of 200, 250, and 200 mg/mL, respectively, compared to the reference drug indomethacin (P<0.001). This remarkable anti-inflammatory activity may be attributable to the abundance of flavonoids in the F. vulgare seed extract. GC-MS confirmed the presence of linalool and fatty acids (palmitic and oleic acids), which have potential anti-inflammatory activities. Therefore, the hydromethanolic extract of F. vulgare seeds may be a valuable anti-inflammatory candidate in the years ahead.

Microstructural, optical and electrical studies on sol gel derived ZnO and ZnO:Al films

        Yasemin Caglar,Müjdat Caglar,Saliha Ilican 한국물리학회 2012 Current Applied Physics Vol.12 No.3

ZnO and ZnO:Al films were deposited onto glass substrates by the sol gel method using spin coating technique. The effects of aluminum dopant on the crystalline structure and orientation of the ZnO films have been investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD) study. Surface morphology of the films has also been analyzed by a field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM) and atomic force microscope (AFM). The average optical transmittance values of all the films is over >83% in the visible region. The optical band gap and Urbach energy values of these films were determined. The absorption edge shifted to the lower energy depending on the Al doping level. The shift of absorption edge is associated with shrinkage effect. The electrical conductivity of the ZnO film enhanced with the Al dopant. From the temperature dependence of conductivity measurements, the activation energy of the films was also calculated.
