A Rare Cause of Thoracic Spinal Cord Compression by Multiple Large Tarlov Cysts
Ahmed-Salem Kleib,Sidi-Mohamed Salihy,Hussein Hamdi,Romain Carron,Outouma Soumaré,Ahmed-Salem Kleib 대한신경손상학회 2018 Korean Journal of Neurotrauma Vol.15 No.1
Spinal extradural arachnoid cyst (SEAC) is a rare cause of spinal cord compression. Bifocal location of thoracic and sacralSEACs is rarely reported in the literature. We report a case of thoracic spinal cord compression by SEAC associated withasymptomatic multiple sacral Tarlov cysts (TC). The surgical management and postoperative outcome of the patient arediscussed. A 34-year-old woman was referred to the hospital for acute thoracic pain with a history of chronic long-standing back pain. She complained of walking diffculties. Neurological examination demonstrated incomplete spastic paraplegia with sensory level in T9. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a large cystic formation from T7-11 and at the levelof the sacrum. We performed laminectomies at the level of interest from T7-11. The cysts were dissected from the underlying dura after removal of the cerebrospinal fluid. We found nerve tissue in the cysts. We excised the cyst and preservedthe nerve roots. Subsequently, a duraplasty was performed with autologous grafts from the lumbar fascia. The conditionof the patient improved after surgery and he was recovering well at follow-up. Although the surgical treatment of TC iscontroversial, especially at the sacral lumbar level, decompression at the dorsal level in this case is indisputable

The nano-porous adsorbents were initially produced by acid treatment of natural clay. The effects of some important factors such as acid type, concentration and residence time were evaluated on porous structure of adsorbent. A reduction about 2.7 A˚ was observed in the distance of montmorillonite layers due to replacement of hydrogen ions in the presence of sulfuric acid. The number of nano-pores, 12 nm, was preferable for removal of contaminations from spent engine oil, depending on the activation agent type in the treatment process. The results are very promising for reduction of adsorbent content in the regeneration of waste lubricant oil.

Empirical literature argues that financial inclusion has positive impact on growth, reduce inequality and poverty. This paper has twofold. First, it aims to provide a measurement of financial inclusion in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) as an oil-rich economy during the period 1980-2016 by the construction of a comprehensive index. Second, we study the incidence of financial inclusion on growth and human development through a set of socioeconomic leading variables. Using GMM methodology, our results suggest that financial inclusion is highly and positively correlated to human development index, and to employed share of adult population. Conversely, financial inclusion is insignificantly negatively correlated to per capita real GDP and highly negatively correlated to the share of rural population and to the share of women in adult population. In this study we take in consideration the non-linearity between inclusive finance, economic growth and human development by performing threshold cointegration and Granger-causality tests. Our findings show that there is non-linear causal relationship between financial inclusion, human development and economic growth in the long-run while in the short-run neither financial inclusion nor economic growth Granger-causes each other. This result is in concordance with previous empirical studies in the case of oil-based economies. Our findings could help policy-makers and regulators in KSA to design an inclusive financial sector taking into account the specificities of the Saudi economy.
Real-Time Implementation of On-Line Trained Neuro-Controller for a BLDC Motor
Salem, M.M.,Zahran, M.B.,Atia, Yousry,Zaki, A.M. The Korean Institute of Power Electronics 2003 JOURNAL OF POWER ELECTRONICS Vol.3 No.1
Implementation and experimental verification of a simple neuro-controller (SNC) as a speed controller for a brush less DC (BLDC) motor is presented. The SNC with one weight and a linear hard limit activation function is trained on-line using the back propagation algorithm. A modified error function is used to ensure good performance during the on-line training, which has been used without previous off-line training. The SNC has been implemented using a computer-interface card mounted on a PC. The driving system performance has been investigated by a number of experimental tests for a variety of input reference speed trajectories.

Background: The urinary tract can be affected by both congenital abnormalities as well as acquired disorders, such as cancer, trauma, infection, inflammation, and iatrogenic injuries, all of which may lead to organ damage requiring eventual reconstruction. As a gold standard, gastrointestinal segment is used for urinary bladder reconstruction. However, one major problem is that while bladder tissue prevents reabsorption of specific solutes, gastrointestinal tissue actually absorbs them. Therefore, tissue engineering approach had been attempted to provide an alternative tissue graft for urinary bladder reconstruction. Methods: Human adipose-derived stem cells isolated from fat tissues were differentiated into smooth muscle cells and then seeded onto a triple-layered PLGA sheet to form a bladder construct. Adult athymic rats underwent subtotal urinary bladder resection and were divided into three treatment groups (n = 3): Group 1 (“sham”) underwent anastomosis of the remaining basal region, Group 2 underwent reconstruction with the cell-free scaffold, and Group 3 underwent reconstruction with the tissue-engineered bladder construct. Animals were monitored on a daily basis and euthanisation was performed whenever a decline in animal health was detected. Results: All animals in Groups 1, 2 and 3 survived for at least 7 days and were followed up to a maximum of 12 weeks post-operation. It was found that by Day 14, substantial ingrowth of smooth muscle and urothelial cells had occurred in Group 2 and 3. In the long-term follow up of group 3 (tissue-engineered bladder construct group), it was found that the urinary bladder wall was completely regenerated and bladder function was fully restored. Urodynamic and radiological evaluations of the reconstructed bladder showed a return to normal bladder volume and function.Histological analysis revealed the presence of three muscular layers and a urothelium similar to that of a normal bladder. Immunohistochemical staining using human-specific myocyte markers (myosin heavy chain and smoothelin) confirmed the incorporation of the seeded cells in the newly regenerated muscular layers. Conclusion: Implantation of PLGA construct seeded with smooth muscle cells derived from human adipose stem cells can lead to regeneration of the muscular layers and urothelial ingrowth, leading to formation of a completely functional urinary bladder.

This paper presents a new control strategy which is based on a switching table applied for Virtual FluxDirect Power Control (VF-DPC) of voltage source inverter based shunt active power filter (SAPF). This controlmethod is applied to eliminate harmonic pollution and compensate the reactive power in the presence of nonlinearloads and unbalanced sources. Its main goal is to select switching states of the SAPF converter appropriately basedon a look-up table established by hysteresis controllers acting on the instantaneous error between the commandedand VF-estimated values of active and reactive power. Our method aims to improve the electrical quantity behaviorin steady and dynamic states while reducing the installing cost of the filter through eliminating the AC line voltagesensors. Facing to disturbances affecting the electrical network, a phase locked loop (PLL) has been integrated .Thecontrol strategy proposed for the active filter has been tested in the Matlab/Simulink environment.
Physicochemical Changes in UV-Exposed Low-Density Polyethylene Films
Salem, M.A.,Farouk, H.,Kashif, I. The Polymer Society of Korea 2002 Macromolecular Research Vol.10 No.3
Unstabilized low-density polyethylene (LDPE) films and films formulated with hindered amine light stabilizer (HALS) were exposed to UV-radiation; and the physicochemical changes during photooxidation processes have been investigated using tensile, FTIR spectre-photometric and thermal analytical (DSC) techniques. The dependence of tensile properties (elongation- and stress-at-break), carboxyl index and heat of fusion on UV-irradiation time have been discussed. The use of HALS is found to be effective in maintaining the UV-mechanical properties of the LDPE films. The experimental results showed that there exists no correlation between mechanical properties and carbonyl index, whereas crystallinity correlates well with carbonyl index in unstabilized and stabilized films for irradiation times greater than 100 h. The rate of formation of carbonyl groups is found to be dependent on UV exposure time. Crystallinity of the film samples is strongly influenced by both exposure time and presence of HALS.
Effect of Ejector Location in Absorption Refrigeration Cycles Using Different Binary Working Fluids
Salem Yosaf,Hasan Ozcan 대한설비공학회 2019 International Journal Of Air-Conditioning and Refr Vol.27 No.1
In this study, three novel modifications of ejector-absorption refrigeration cycles (E-ARC) are investigated to evaluate the effect of ejector location on cycle performances. In the first modification (triple pressure level absorption refrigeration cycle TPL-ARC), the ejector is located at the evaporator inlet. In the second modification (double ejector absorption refrigeration cycle DE-ARC), two ejectors are used; one is located at the evaporator inlet and the other at the absorber inlet, which are coupled to each other. In the third modification (low pressure condenser absorption refrigeration cycle LPC-ARC), the steam ejector is installed at the downstream of the vapor generator discharging line. An additional flow splitter is integrated to the steam ejector outlet and part of the vapor is extracted and returned to the absorber at a pressure equal to the diffuser pressure. Effect of ejector location on thermodynamic performances are evaluated considering three different working fluids, namely ammonia–water solution (NH3–H2O), lithium bromide-water solution (H2O–LiBr), and lithium chloride–water solution (H2O–LiCl). Even though all three configurations enhance the conventional absorption refrigeration cycle (C-ARC) performances, the LPC-ARCs work at high temperature and improve the cycle performance. The TPL-ARC proves to improve the COP and exergy efficiency up to 9.14% and 7.61%, respectively, presenting the highest thermodynamic performance enhancement and lowest operating temperature.
