Translation and Validation of the Malay Version of Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment Questionnaire for Older Adults in Malaysia

Sakinah Harith,Sze Lin Tan 대한노인병학회 2020 Annals of geriatric medicine and research Vol.24 No.2

Background: This study aimed to translate and validate the comprehensive geriatric assessment (CGA) questionnaire among older adult patients in Malaysia in the Malay language. Methods: The questionnaire contained items on the socio-demographic characteristics, medical condition, quality of life (QOL), nutritional status, functional capacity, and depression status. The forward and backward translation processes of the original English language version of the questionnaire were undertaken by three independent linguistic translators, while its content was validated by an expert team consisting of seven geriatricians, physicians, dietitian, and lecturers. The Malay version of the questionnaire was tested for face validity in 10 older adult patients over 65 years of age admitted to the medical wards in Hospital Universiti Sains Malaysia (HUSM), Malaysia. The internal consistency reliability and construct validity were evaluated among 166 older adult patients (mean age, 71.0 years; 73.5% male) at the Medical Outpatients Department and medical wards of Hospital Sultanah Nur Zahirah (HSNZ), Kuala Terengganu, Malaysia. The questionnaire was administered through face-to-face interviews with the patients. Minor amendments were made after the content and face validity tests. Results: The internal consistency reliability was good, as the Cronbach’s alpha for most of the scales surpassed 0.70, ranging from 0.70 to 0.98, with only one exception (Mini Nutritional Assessment Short-Form, Cronbach’s alpha=0.62). The factor loadings for all scales were satisfactory (>0.40), ranging from 0.45 to 0.90. Conclusion: The Malay-version CGA showed evidence of satisfactory internal consistency reliability and construct validity in Malaysian geriatric patients. Therefore, it is recommended to be used for the assessment of the QOL, nutritional, functional, and depression status in this population.

Seedling Stage Image-Based Phenotyping Selection Criteria through Tolerance Indices on Drought and Salinity Stress in Rice

Andi Isti Sakinah,Muh Farid,Yunus Musa,Aris Hairmansis,Muhammad Fuad Anshori 한국육종학회 2024 Plant Breeding and Biotechnology Vol.12 No.-

The development of rice seedlings stressed by drought and salt is shown by different morphometric and colorimetric traits. These distinctions can be used to understand the response of plants to challenging conditions. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the efficacy of image-based phenotyping in the early testing of rice plants and observe how the plants respond to both drought and salinity. A stress tolerance index with multivariate analysis was used for the selection of the most important traits. The experiment consisted of 2 factors, namely the degree of environmental stress and rice genotype. Furthermore, the degree of environmental stress comprised normal (NaCl and PEG 0%), drought (10% PEG), salinity (60 mM NaCl), as well as a combination of moderate drought and salinity (5% PEG + 30 mM NaCl). The results showed that both morphometric (area, convex hull, bounding area, perimeter, centermassy) and colorimetric (CIVE, VARI, RGBVI, MGRVI, NDI, GLI, NGRDI) can be used as selection characters.

Possible Sarcopenia and Its Association with Nutritional Status, Dietary Intakes, Physical Activity and Health-Related Quality of Life among Older Stroke Survivors

Hui Jie Wong,Sakinah Harith,Pei Lin Lua,Khairul Azmi Ibrahim 대한노인병학회 2022 Annals of geriatric medicine and research Vol.26 No.2

Background: Screening for sarcopenia in the stroke population is an emerging concept in research and clinical practice. Therefore, this cross-sectional study aimed to assess the prevalence of possible sarcopenia and its associated factors among older stroke survivors who visited the neurology and rehabilitation departments of three public hospitals in Malaysia. Methods: We acquired data on sociodemographic characteristics, clinical profiles, malnutrition risk, dietary intake, physical activity level, and health-related quality of life. Possible sarcopenia was diagnosed in individuals with decreased calf circumference and low handgrip strength, as proposed by the Asia Working Group for Sarcopenia (2019). Finally, we performed descriptive analysis and binary logistic regression. Results: Among 196 older adults with stroke (mean± standard deviation of age: 67.60 ± 5.70 years), 42.3% had possible sarcopenia, with a higher prevalence in the more advanced age group (≥70 years). In univariable analysis, possible sarcopenia was significantly associated with anthropometric indices, malnutrition risk, nutrient intake, physical activity level, and health-related quality of life. In multivariable analysis, body mass index (adjusted odds ratio [AOR]=0.57; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.43–0.75) was the only factor associated with possible sarcopenia among individuals aged ≥70 years. Recurrent stroke (AOR=3.48; 95% CI, 1.02–11.92), body mass index (AOR=0.64; 95% CI, 0.54–0.76), and EQ-5D index (AOR=0.15; 95% CI, 0.03–0.78) were significantly associated with possible sarcopenia in the 60–69-year age group. Conclusion: The prevalence of possible sarcopenia among community-dwelling older stroke survivors was high. Therefore, we recommend routine screening for possible sarcopenia to ensure early nutritional and exercise intervention.

Mesophilic and thermophilic biomethane production by co-digesting pretreated petrochemical wastewater with beef and dairy cattle manure

Md. Nurul Islam Siddique,A.W. Zularisam,Mimi Sakinah Abd Munaim 한국공업화학회 2014 Journal of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Vol.20 No.1

The use of pretreated petrochemical wastewater as provender wastewater for anaerobic degradationwas explored in a continuous stirred tank reactor with dairy and beef cattle manure, under bothmesophilic and thermophilic states. The co-digestion of the wastewaters contributed 50% enhancementin methane production, followed by a 98 ± 0.5% reduction in chemical oxygen demand at 10 days hydraulicretention time. No VFA aggregation was identified. In comparison with the digestion of PWW alone, methaneyield increased by 50–60% under mesophilic conditions and 50–65% under thermophilic conditions due toco-digestion.

Biohydrogen production from palm oil mill effluent using immobilized mixed culture

        Lakhveer Singh,Zularisam A. Wahid,Muhammad Faisal Siddiqui,Anwer Ahmad,Mohd Hasbi Ab. Rahim,Mimi Sakinah 한국공업화학회 2013 Journal of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Vol.19 No.2

Cell immobilization techniques were adopted to bio-hydrogen production using immobilized anaerobic sludge as the seed culture. Palm oil mill effluent (POME) was used as the substrate carbon source. It was found that with a POME concentration of 20 g COD/l in the feed, the suspended-cell containing reactor was able to produce hydrogen at an optimal rate of 0.348 l H2/(l POME h) at HRT 6 h. However, the immobilized-cell containing reactor exhibited a better hydrogen production rate of 0.589 l H2/(l POME h), which occurred at HRT 2 h. When the immobilized-cell containing reactor was scaled up to 5 l, the hydrogen production rate was 0.500–0.588 l H2/(l POME h) for HRT 2–10 h, but after a thermal treatment (60 8C, 1 h) the rate increase to 0.632 l H2/(l POME h) at HRT 2 h. The main soluble metabolites were butyric acid and acetic acid, followed by propionic acid and ethanol.

Image Based-Phenotyping and Selection Index Based on Multivariate Analysis for Rice Hydroponic Screening under Drought Stress

( Adinda Asri Laraswati ),( Rusnadi Padjung ),( Muh Farid ),( Nasaruddin Nasaruddin ),( Muhammad Fuad Anshori ),( Amin Nur ),( Andi Isti Sakinah ) 한국육종학회 2021 Plant Breeding and Biotechnology Vol.9 No.4

The development of rice varieties that are tolerant of drought stress needs to be detected with Image-based phenotyping. This Image-based phenotyping method in combination with selection index and multivariate analysis can characterize the morphological response easily within a short time, which makes it is suitable for rice screening under drought stress. Therefore, this study aims to determine the selection index based on multivariate analysis and assess the effectiveness of using image-based phenotyping in drought rice screening. This study was conducted in two stages, the first was in static hydroponic and the second was in dynamic hydroponic. In static hydroponic, a split-plot design was used, where the levels of drought were the main plots and varieties were the subplots. However, in dynamic hydroponic, a nested design was used, where the replicates were nested in the drought level treatments. Also, The drought level factors used were PEG 0%, PEG 10%, and PEG 20%, and the variety factor consisted of 5 varieties which were repeated three times. The results showed that the selection index for static hydroponic consisted of shoot area (0.421), green shoot area (0.4177), and the area growth rate (0.4192). Meanwhile, the selection index in dynamic hydroponics consisted of object extent Y from the side (0.4516) and convex hull from the side (0.4177). The regression of the two-selection index has a good determination of 0.84. Hence, these results showed that rice screening based on image-based phenotyping can be recommended for rapid screening under drought stress.
