Ethylbenzene (EBZ) and trichloroethy-lene (TCE), the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are common constituents of cleaning and degreasing agents, paints, pesticides, personal care products, gasoline and solvents. They are the most common waste chemicals from industry. EBZ is classified as a possible carcinogen and TCE is also classified as a probable carcinogen. This study analyzed the genome-wide expression profiles of human promyelocytic leukemia HL-60 cells exposed to EBZ and TCE using a 35-K whole human genome oligonucleotide microarray. Exposure to EBZ and TCE altered the expression of 106 and 332 up- and also 171 and 856 down-regulated genes individually, 44 genes were up-regulated, and 81 common genes were down-regulated. Genes with a significantly increased expression levels (over 1.5 fold and p-values ⁄0.05) with EBZ and TCE were then classified with gene ontology (GO) and KEGG pathway annotation. Clustering of differentially expressed common genes were associated with RIG-I-like receptor signaling pathway, cytokine-cytokine receptor interaction, toll-like signaling pathway, and small cell lung cancer. GO analysis showed that the major categories in the biological process ontology were immune response, regulation of apoptosis, regu-lation of programmed cell death, regulation of cell death, and defense response ontology. Functionally important immune response and apoptosis related genes were also validating their expression profiles by quantitative real-time RT-PCR. Thus, this study may provides a valuable information to do further analysis to explore the mechanism of EBZ and TCE induced hematotoxicity.

The lowland areas of the Himalayan region are subjected to immense anthropogenic pressure because of least representation in the protected area network. Kitam Bird Sanctuary is the only representative protected area that occurs below 1000 m in Sikkim state of India (a part of globally significant biodiversity hotspot of Himalayas) and serves as the refuge for various species of flora and fauna. Here we studied butterfly diversity and community composition in Kitam Bird Sanctuary (a small protected area of 6 km 2 geographical area) following point count method spread across predetermined transects. Altogether 1674 butterflies belonging to 111 species and six families were recorded after completion of 240 point counts. Among these, 18 species are federally protected under the Wildlife (Protection) Act (1972) of India. Most of the butterflies were forest specialist in terms of habitat preference, whereas based on host plant specificity, the butterfly community was mostly dominated by generalist feeder (Oligophagous II and Polyphagous). Butterfly community parameters showed a strong correlation with habitat variables. While Kitam Bird Sanctuary is primarily designated for conservation of lowland birds, the high diversity of butterflies both in terms of taxonomic richness and trait composition suggests that the sanctuary harbors an ideal habitat for butterflies of the tropical region and invites conservation attention.
Process Systems Engineering, Process Safety, Transport Phenomena : Gas-Liquid Flow Through Coils

Experimental investigations have been carried out to evaluate the two-phase pressure drop and the holdup for flow through helical coils. The coils were made of thick wall transparent PVC tube of diameter 0.01 m and 0.013 m. 24 coils were made at different coil diameter and different helix angles (0° to 12°). Three different liquids were used for the experimental studies and air was the gas. Empirical correlations have been developed to predict the two-phase friction factor and the liquid holdup as functions of the physical and dynamic variables of the system. Statistical analyses of the correlations suggest that they are of acceptable accuracy.

Dichloromethane (DCM, methylene chloride) can readily absorb and metabolized to several metabolites in different target organs. Several mutagenesis studies and animal bioassays have been demonstrated the carcinogenicity of DCM. In this present study, we analyze the genome wide expression profiles of DCM using human promyelocytic leukemia HL60 cells. Exposure to IC20 and IC50 doses concentration of DCM altered the expression of 1117 and 1684 upand also 730 and 1736 down-regulated genes individually, 366 up- and 281 down-regulated genes were commonly expressed. Genes with a significantly altered the expression levels (over 1.5 fold and p-values⁄0.05) were then classified with gene ontology (GO) and KEGG pathway annotation. Clustering of differentially expressed common genes were associated with JAKSTAT signaling pathway, MAPK signaling pathway, apoptosis, prostate cancer and small cell lung cancer. GO analysis showed the category wise biological process ontology. Functionally important immune response and apoptosis related genes were also validating their expression profiles by quantitative real-time RTPCR. DCM exposure induces IFN-related genes as part of the immune response which was then followed the apoptosis pathway. GO and KEGG pathway database analyses provided a valuable mechanistic insight of DCM exposure in human leukemia cells.
