Efficient Removal of Lead and Copper from Aqueous Solutions by Using Modified Polyacrylonitrile Nanofiber Membranes

Saeideh Rajabi,Hanieh Shaki 한국섬유공학회 2021 Fibers and polymers Vol.22 No.3

The performance of the prepared polyacrylonitrile (PAN) nanofiber membrane by electrospinning process for theremoval of lead and copper ions from aqueous solutions was investigated. The optimum electrospinning conditions wereobtained to be 14 wt% concentration, 20 kV voltages, 120 mm tips to collector distance and 0.8 ml h-1 flow rate. Chemicalfunctionalities were grafted by a two steps grafting process which involves hydrolysis and chemical modification withethyleneglycol (EG), ethylenediamine (EDA), diethylenetriamine (DTA). The prepared nanofibers were characterized byAttenuated total reflectance-Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR), Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), Atomic ForceMicroscopy (AFM), UV-Visible Spectrophotometer and Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDS or EDX) analysis. Theadsorption capacity of Cu2+ and Pb2+ ions on modified PAN nanofiber mats were evaluated by atomic absorptionspectroscopy (AAS). Adsorption isotherms were used to find the model of the adsorption behavior and to calculate theremoval percentage. The results show that modified nanofibers with ethylenediamine have the maximum adsorption capacityabout of 22.954 mmol/gr and 12.367 mmol/gr for Cu2+ and Pb2+ ions, respectively. Therefore, these modified nanofibers openup delighted opportunities for the efficient removal of Pb2+ and Cu2+ from aqueous solutions.

      • Development of a checklist to validate the framework of a narrative medicine program based on Gagne’s instructional design model in Iran through consensus of a multidisciplinary expert panel

        Saeideh Daryazadeh,Nikoo Yamani,Payman Adibi 한국보건의료인국가시험원 2019 보건의료교육평가 Vol.16 No.-

Purpose: Narrative medicine is a patient-centered approach focusing on the development of narrative skills and self-awareness that incorporates “attending, representing, and affiliating” in clinical encounters. Acquiring narrative competency promotes clinical performance, and narratives can be used for teaching professionalism, empathy, multicultural education, and professional development. This study was conducted to develop a checklist to validate the framework of a narrative medicine program through consensus of a panel. Methods: This expert panel study was conducted from 2018 to 2019 at Isfahan University of Medical Sciences, Iran. It included 2 phases: developing a framework in 2 steps and forming an expert panel to validate the framework in 3 rounds. We adapted a 3-stage narrative medicine model with 9 training activities from Gagne’s theory, developed a framework, and then produced a checklist to validate the framework in a multidisciplinary expert panel that consisted of 7 experts. The RAND/UCLA appropriateness method was used to assess the experts’ agreement. The first-round opinions were received by email. Consensus was achieved in the second and third rounds through face-to-face meetings to facilitate interactions and discussion among the experts. Results: Sixteen valid indicators were approved and 100% agreement was obtained among experts (with median values in the range of 7–9 out of a maximum of 9, with no disagreement), and the framework was validated by the expert panel. Conclusion: The 16 checklist indicators can be used to evaluate narrative medicine programs as a simple and practical guide to improve teaching effectiveness and promote life-long learning

Impact of a narrative medicine program on reflective capacity and empathy of medical students in Iran

        Saeideh Daryazadeh,Payman Adibi,Nikoo Yamani,Roya Mollabashi 한국보건의료인국가시험원 2020 보건의료교육평가 Vol.17 No.-

Purpose: Narrative medicine consists of the expression of medical experiences and the reflection on narratives to foster empathic communication with patients. Reflecting on narratives increases self-awareness and recognition of the feelings of the narrator or the story’smain character, which in turn affects the audience. This study was conducted to examine the impact of a narrative medicine program onthe reflective capacity and empathy of medical students. Methods: A quasi-experimental study was performed during the 2018–2019 academic year at Isfahan University of Medical Sciencesin Iran involving 135 medical interns in 2 groups (control [n=66] and experimental [n=69]). Interns in the experimental group tookpart in seven 2-hour reflective practice sessions, while those in the control group underwent no educational intervention. Pre-test andpost-test assessments were conducted for both groups using 2 valid and reliable tools for the assessment of reflective capacity and empathy. Mean reflection and empathy scores were compared within groups (between pre- and post-test values) and between groups (usingthe paired-t test and the t-test; P≤0.05). Results: The mean reflection and empathy scores of the experimental group significantly increased from pre-test to post-test, but thoseof the control group did not. Moreover, the mean post-test scores were significantly different between the 2 groups (P<0.001). Conclusion: Narrative medicine is an effective teaching method that can improve reflective capacity and empathy, thereby ultimatelypromoting professionalism as a core competency in medicine. Consideration of learning conditions and interdisciplinary teaching arenecessary for implementing a narrative medicine program.

Removal of tylosin from aqueous solution by UV/nano Ag/S2O8 process : Influence of operational parameters and kinetic study

Saeideh Kamali Moghaddam,Mohammadhossein Rasoulifard,Morteza Vahedpour,Mohammadreza Eskandarian 한국화학공학회 2014 Korean Journal of Chemical Engineering Vol.31 No.9

The present work deals with the photooxidative degradation of tylosin antibiotic (TYL) in the presenceof potassium peroxydisulfate (K2S2O8) irradiated by UV-C in the presence of immobilized nano silver. Effects of pH,temperature, peroxydisulfate concentration and immobilized nano silver dosage on the degradation efficiency of TYLwere examined. Degradation efficiency was small when the oxidation was carried out in the absence of UV irradiation. Results showed that degradation of TYL increases with temperature, nano Ag and peroxydisulfate initial concentra-tion and decreases with pH. Due to UV/nano Ag/S2O82−processes, more than 90% of TYL can be degraded at roomtemperature in 35 min at an initial concentration of 50 mgl−1. Degradation reaction order of TYL by UV/nano Ag/S2O82−process is 1.89. Meanwhile, the initial rates of degradation in UV/nano Ag/S2O82−processes can be described well bythe Langmuir-Hinshelwood kinetic model.

Radiation dosimetry of 89Zr labeled antibody estimated using the MIRD method and MCNP code

        Yazdi Saeideh Izadi,Sadeghi Mahdi,Saeedzadeh Elham,Jalilifar Mostafa 한국원자력학회 2023 Nuclear Engineering and Technology Vol.55 No.4

One important issue in using radiopharmaceuticals as therapeutic and imaging agents is predicting different organ absorbed dose following their injection. The present study aims at extrapolating dosimetry estimates to a female phantom from the animal data of 89Zr radionuclide accumulation using the Sparks-Idogan relationship. The absorbed dose of 89Zr radionuclide in different organs of the human body was calculated based on its distribution data in mice using both MIRD method and the MCNP simulation code. In this study, breasts, liver, heart wall, stomach, kidneys, lungs and spleen were considered as source and target organs. The highest and the lowest absorbed doses were respectively delivered to the liver (4.00E-02 and 3.43E-02 mGy/MBq) and the stomach (1.83E-03 and 1.66E-03 mGy/MBq). Moreover, there was a good agreement between the results obtained from both MIRD and MCNP methods. Therefore, according to the dosimetry results, [89Zr] DFO-CR011-PET/CT seems to be a suitable for diagnostic imaging of the breast anomalies for CDX-011 targeting gpNMB in patients with TNBC in the future.

The effect of vitamin C on the gene expression profile of sperm protamines in the male partners of couples with recurrent pregnancy loss: A randomized clinical trial

        Hamidian, Saeideh,Talebi, Ali Reza,Fesahat, Farzaneh,Bayat, Mohammad,Mirjalili, Ali Mohammad,Ashrafzadeh, Hamid Reza,Rajabi, Mahya,Montazeri, Fateme,Babaei, Saeid The Korean Society for Reproductive Medicine 2020 Clinical and Experimental Reproductive Medicine Vol.47 No.1

Objective: Since sperm abnormalities are known to be a major reason for recurrent pregnancy loss (RPL), any defects in DNA structure and chromatin condensation can place embryos at risk in the early stage of development and implantation. As antioxidants such as vitamin C may play a protective role against the destruction of protamine genes in sperm chromatin, this study was conducted to evaluate the effects of vitamin C on chromatin and the expression of protamine genes in the male partners of couples with RPL. Methods: Twenty male partners of couples with RPL were selected as the intervention group and received vitamin C supplementation (250 mg daily for 3 months). Healthy fertile men (n = 20) were included as controls. Sperm chromatin, DNA integrity, and the expression levels of protamine genes were evaluated before and after treatment. Results: Significant differences were found in sperm morphology, protamine deficiency, and apoptosis between the two groups and before and after vitamin C administration. A significant change was found in mRNA levels of PRM1, PRM2, and the PRM1/PRM2 ratio after treatment. Conclusion: Daily oral administration of vitamin C may improve human sperm parameters and DNA integrity by increasing protamine gene expression levels in the male partners of couples with RPL. The beneficial effects of vitamin C supplementation as an antioxidant for the male partners of couples with RPL could lead to improved pregnancy outcomes in these cases.

Evaluating the effect of conditioned medium from endometrial stem cells on endometriosis-derived endometrial stem cells

        Seyedeh Saeideh Sahraei,Ali Kowsari,Faezeh Davoodi Asl,Mohsen Sheykhhasan,Leila Naserpoor,Azar Sheikholeslami 대한해부학회 2022 Anatomy & Cell Biology Vol.55 No.1

Endometriosis is a common, benign gynecological disease which is determined as an overspreading of endometrial tissue in exterior region of the uterine cavity. Evidence suggests that retrograde menstrual blood which contains mesenchymal stem cells with differential gene expression compared to healthy women may play a role in endometriosis creation. We aimed to identify whether the conditioned medium (CM) from menstrual blood-derived mesenchymal stem cells (MenSCs) of healthy women can affect the expression level of inf lammatory and stemness genes of MenSCs from endometriosis women. Endometriosis-derived MenSCs (E-MenSCs) were treated with CM derived from healthy women’s MenSCs (non-endometriosis derived MenSCs [NE-MenSCs]). Some CD markers were analyzed by flow cytometer before and after treatment compared with NE-MenSCs, and the expression level of inflammatory and stemness genes was evaluated by real-time PCR. E-MenSCs show different morphology in vitro culture in comparison with NE-MenSCs, which were changed in the presence of CM, into a morphology more similar to normal cells and showed significant decrease expression of CD10 after CM treatment. In our results, the interleukin-1, cyclooxygenase-2, and hypoxia-inducible factor 1α as inflamaturay genes and octamer-binding transcription factor 4, NANOG, and sex determining region Y-box 2 as stemness genes showed significantly different expression level in E-MenSCs after treating with CM. Our study indicates that the expression level of some inflammatory- and stemness-related genes which have differential expression in E-MenSCs compared with NE-MenSCs, could be changed to normal status by using CM derived from NE-MenSCs.

Simulation and optimization of ethanol amine production plant

Gholamreza Zahedi,Saeideh Amraei,Mazda Biglari 한국화학공학회 2009 Korean Journal of Chemical Engineering Vol.26 No.6

An industrial Ethanol Amine (EA) production plant was simulated and optimized. Due to lack of accurate reaction rate information, the first step involved obtaining reliable kinetic data from the SRI (Stanford Research Institute) industrial database and calculation using error minimization method. In the next step, by implementing the obtained reaction kinetics the whole plant was simulated using Hysys software. Simulation results were compared with the SRI data and showed that there is acceptable agreement between simulation and the measured industrial data. In the next step of study by applying the gradient search (GS) optimization technique the plant was optimized using: feeding ammonia to ethylene oxide (EO) molar ratio, water flow rate in the feed stream, and reactor temperature as optimization variables. Employing process profit as objective function the optimal operating conditions were found to be: ammonia to EO ratio of 5 (mol/mol), water flow rate of 52.59 kg mol/hr and reactor temperature of 85 ℃.

Experimental and computational fluid dynamics modeling of mixing by Visco-jet impellers

Masoud Rahimi,Saeideh Amraei,Ammar Abdulaziz Alsairafi 한국화학공학회 2011 Korean Journal of Chemical Engineering Vol.28 No.6

This paper reports experimental and computational frluid dynamics (CFD) studies on an impeller called Visco-jet with the aim of finding the effect of two side diameters ratio of its blade, which has a semi-conical shape,on drawdown process of floating polymericparticles into high viscosity glycerin solution. Nine different geometries were examined experimentally, and there were significant differences in their performance. The results reveal that when diameter of smaller side of semi-cone impeller is half of the other side, mixing was performed in a more efficient way. The CFD-predicted results have been used for explaining the experimental observation. The CFD-predicted hydrodynamics parameters confirm superiority of this geometry compared with the other ones.
