      • Are Women in Kuwait Aware of Breast Cancer and Its Diagnostic Procedures?

Saeed, Raed Saeed,Bakir, Yousif Yacoub,Ali, Layla Mohammed Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2014 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.15 No.15

The aim of this study was to examine the knowledge and awareness of women in Kuwait with regard to risk factors, symptoms and diagnostic procedures of breast cancer. A total of 521 questionnaires were distributed among women in Kuwait. Results showed that 72% of respondents linked breast cancer factors to family history, while 69.7% scored abnormal breast enlargement as the most detectable symptom of the disease. Some 84% of participants had heard about self-examination, but knowledge about mammograms was limited to 48.6% and only 22.2% were familiar with diagnostic procedures. Some 22.9% of respondents identified the age over 40 years as the reasonable age to start mammogram screening. Risk factor awareness was independent on age groups (p>0.05), but both high education and family history increased the likelihood of postivie answers; the majority knew about a few factors such as aging, pregnancy after age 30, breast feeding for short time, menopause after age of 50, early puberty, and poor personal hygiene. In conclusion, 43.1% of participants had an overall good knowledge of breast cancer with regards to symptoms, risk factors and breast examination. Very highly significant associations (p<0.005) were evident for all groups except for respondents distributed by nationality (p=0.444). Early campaigns for screening the breast should be recommended to eliminate the confusion of wrong perceptions about malignant mammary disease.

ASPPMVSNet: A high-receptive-field multiview stereo network for dense three-dimensional reconstruction

        Saleh Saeed(Saleh Saeed ),Sungjun Lee(Sungjun Lee),Yongju Cho(Yongju Cho),Unsang Park(Unsang Park) 한국전자통신연구원 2022 ETRI Journal Vol.44 No.6

The learning-based multiview stereo (MVS) methods for three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction generally use 3D volumes for depth inference. The quality of the reconstructed depth maps and the corresponding point clouds is directly influenced by the spatial resolution of the 3D volume. Consequently, these methods produce point clouds with sparse local regions because of the lack of the memory required to encode a high volume of information. Here, we apply the atrous spatial pyramid pooling (ASPP) module in MVS methods to obtain dense feature maps with multiscale, long-range, contextual information using high receptive fields. For a given 3D volume with the same spatial resolution as that in the MVS methods, the dense feature maps from the ASPP module encoded with superior information can produce dense point clouds without a high memory footprint. Furthermore, we propose a 3D loss for training the MVS networks, which improves the predicted depth values by 24.44%. The ASPP module provides state-of-the-art qualitative results by constructing relatively dense point clouds, which improves the DTU MVS dataset benchmarks by 2.25% compared with those achieved in the previous MVS methods.

Investigating the expression pattern of the angiopoietin-Tie system in ALL and its correlation with baseline characteristics

        Saeed Zaka Khosravi,Samira Molaei Ramshe,Mehdi Allahbakhshian Farsani,Saeed Solali,Mohammadreza Moonesi,Majid Farshdousti Hagh 대한혈액학회 2021 Blood Research Vol.56 No.2

Background Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) is the most common type of leukemia in children. Several environmental and genetic factors are known to be involved in its development and progression. The angiopoietin-Tie system is one of the most critical factors in angiogenesis, and its possible role in solid tumors and leukemia has been previously investigated. In this study, we examined the expression of these genes in ALL patients (early pre-B-ALL and pre-B-ALL) and compared them with normal samples. Methods Bone marrow samples were collected from 40 patients (aged 0‒19 yr) newly diagnosed with early pre-B-ALL or pre-B-ALL using molecular and flow cytometric tests and from 15 control individuals. For molecular tests, RNA extraction and cDNA synthesis were performed, and Ang1, Ang2, Ang4, Tie1, and Tie2 gene expression was examined by real-time polymerase chain reaction. Results Ang2, Tie1, and Tie2 gene expression were significantly increased in patients with ALL, whereas Ang1 gene expression was decreased. The Ang4 gene did not show significant expression changes between the two groups. Conclusion Changes in the expression of the Ang-Tie system indicate a possible role of angiogenesis in ALL prognosis. Moreover, such changes can be considered as potential diagnostic biomarkers or therapeutic targets.

Comparison of an Adaptive Neuro-fuzzy Inference System and an Artificial Neural Network in the Cross-talk Correction of Simultaneous 99mTc / 201Tl SPECT Imaging Using a GATE Monte-Carlo Simulation

Saeed Heidary,Saeed Setayeshi,Mohammad Ghannadi-Maragheh 한국물리학회 2014 THE JOURNAL OF THE KOREAN PHYSICAL SOCIETY Vol.65 No.5

The aim of this study is to compare the adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) andthe artificial neural network (ANN) to estimate the cross-talk contamination of 99mTc / 201Tlimage acquisition in the 201Tl energy window (77 ± 15% keV). GATE (Geant4 Application inEmission and Tomography) is employed due to its ability to simulate multiple radioactive sourcesconcurrently. Two kinds of phantoms, including two digital and one physical phantom, are used. Inthe real and the simulation studies, data acquisition is carried out using eight energy windows. TheANN and the ANFIS are prepared in MATLAB, and the GATE results are used as a training dataset. Three indications are evaluated and compared. The ANFIS method yields better outcomes fortwo indications (Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient and contrast) and the two phantom resultsin each category. The maximum image biasing, which is the third indication, is found to be 6%more than that for the ANN.

The effect of antioxidant supplementation on dysmenorrhea and endometriosis-associated painful symptoms: a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized clinical trials

        Saeed Baradwan,Abdulrahim Gari,Hussein Sabban,Majed Saeed Alshahrani,Khalid Khadawardi,Ibtihal Abdulaziz Bukhari,Abdullah Alyousef,Ahmed Abu-Zaid 대한산부인과학회 2024 Obstetrics & Gynecology Science Vol.67 No.2

This study aimed to review randomized controlled trials (RCTs) investigating the effects of dietary antioxidant supplements on the severity of endometriosis-related pain symptoms. The PubMed/Medline, Scopus, and Web of Science databases were searched until April 2022. Additionally, we manually searched the reference lists. Endpoints were summarized as standardized mean difference (SMD) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) in a random-effects model. The I2 statistic was used to assess heterogeneity. Ten RCTs were included in this meta-analysis. Overall, 10 studies were related to dysmenorrhea, four to dyspareunia, and four to pelvic pain. Antioxidants significantly reduced dysmenorrhea (SMD, -0.48; 95% CI, -0.82 to -0.13; I2=75.14%). In a subgroup analysis, a significant reduction of dysmenorrhea was observed only in a subset of trials that administered vitamin D (SMD, -0.59; 95% CI, -1.13 to -0.06; I2=69.59%) and melatonin (SMD, -1.40; 95% CI, -2.47 to -0.32; I2=79.15%). Meta-analysis results also suggested that antioxidant supplementation significantly improved pelvic pain (SMD, -1.51; 95% CI, -2.74 to -0.29; I2=93.96%), although they seem not to have a significant beneficial impact on the severity of dyspareunia. Dietary antioxidant supplementation seems to beneficially impact the severity of endometriosis-related dysmenorrhea (with an emphasis on vitamin D and melatonin) and pelvic pain. However, due to the relatively small sample size and high heterogeneity, the findings should be interpreted cautiously, and the importance of further well-designed clinical studies cannot be overstated. 17-alpha hydroxyprogesterone caproate for the prevention of recurrent preterm birth among singleton pregnant women with a prior history of preterm birth: a systematic review and meta-analysis of six randomized controlled trials

( Saeed Baradwan ),( Sahar Hassan Abdulghani ),( Mohammed Abuzaid ),( Khalid Khadawardi ),( Majed Saeed Alshahrani ),( Abdulrahman Al-matary ),( May A. Alrasheed ),( Najlaa Talat Miski ),( Aroob Abdul 대한산부인과학회 2021 Obstetrics & Gynecology Science Vol.64 No.6

To perform a systematic review and meta-analysis of all randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that investigated the clinical benefits of 17-alpha hydroxyprogesterone caproate (17OHPC) in the prevention of recurrent preterm birth (PTB) among singleton pregnant women with a previous history of PTB. We searched four major databases up till April 2021 and assessed the risk of bias in the included studies. We meta-analyzed various maternal-neonatal endpoints (n=18) and pooled them as mean difference or risk ratio (RR) with 95% confidence interval (CI) using the random-effects model. Six RCTs met the inclusion criteria, comprising 2,573 patients (17OHPC=1,617, control=956). RCTs revealed an overall low risk of bias. The rates of PTB <35 weeks (n=5 RCTs; RR, 0.77; 95% CI, 0.63-0.93; P=0.008), PTB <32 weeks (n=3 RCTs; RR, 0.68; 95% CI, 0.51-0.91; P=0.009), neonates with low birth weight (<2.5 kg) at delivery (n=3 RCTs; RR, 0.63; 95% CI, 0.5-0.79; P<0.001), and neonatal death (n=4 RCTs; RR, 0.41; 95% CI, 0.20-0.84; P=0.02) were significantly reduced in the 17OHPC group compared with the control group. Moreover, 17OHPC treatment correlated with a significantly decreased rate of retinopathy (n=2 RCTs; RR, 0.42; 95% CI, 0.18-0.97; P=0.004). However, there were no significant differences in the rates of neonatal intensive care unit admission, cesarean delivery, and other pretermrelated complications between both the groups. Among singleton pregnant women with a prior history of PTB, 17OHPC may favorably decrease the risks of recurrent PTB and reduce the rate of neonatal death.

Evaluating spatial structure of annual rainfall in relation to local factors in Iran

        Saeed Balyani,Saeed Rointan,Mohammad Molaei Qelichi,Mansour Halimi,Chnour Mohamadi 대한공간정보학회 2017 Spatial Information Research Vol.25 No.3

An understanding of rainfall characteristics at multiple spatiotemporal scales is of great importance for hydrological, biogeochemical, and land surface modeling studies. The paper deals with the identification of rainfall spatial patterns and its relationship with local factors (altitude, longitude, and latitude) and rainfall of Iran. The employed data consists of rainfall values measured by the rainfall gauge network, spread over the country. The statistical test performed on the collected data included spatial auto-correlation, global Moran’s index, local Moran’s index, and hotspots. The results showed that the precipitation variation in Iran followed a clustering pattern with high concentration. Univariate Local Moran statistics of 0.92 indicates that strong spatial dependence in annual rainfall in Iran. Hotspot analysis revealed hot spots pattern in north, northwest and west and also cold spots in some parts of the center, east and south-east of Iran. Moreover we found a strong significant relationship between longitude, latitude and annual rainfall of Iran (-0.54 and 0.38 respectively) but the relation between altitude and annual rainfall is about 0.016.

      • Predicting ESP and HNT effects on the mechanical properties of eco-friendly composites subjected to micro-indentation test

        Saeed Kamarian,Ali Khalvandi,Thanh Mai Nguyen Tran,Reza Barbaz-Isfahani,Saeed Saber-Samandari,Jung-Il Song Techno-Press 2023 Advances in nano research Vol.15 No.4

The main goal of the present study was to assess the effects of eggshell powder (ESP) and halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) on the mechanical properties of abaca fiber (AF)-reinforced natural composites. For this purpose, a limited number of indentation tests were first performed on the AF/polypropylene (PP) composites for different HNT and ESP loadings (0 wt.% ~ 6 wt.%), load amplitudes (150, 200, and 250 N), and two types of indenters (Vickers or conical). The Young's modulus, hardness and plasticity index of each specimen were calculated using the indentation test results and Oliver-Pharr method. The accuracy of the experimental results was confirmed by comparing the values of the Young's modulus obtained from the indentation test with the results of the conventional tensile test. Then, a feed-forward shallow artificial neural network (ANN) with high efficiency was trained based on the obtained experimental data. The trained ANN could properly predict the variations of the mentioned mechanical properties of AF/PP composites incorporated with different HNT and ESP loadings. Furthermore, the trained ANN demonstrated that HNTs increase the elastic modulus and hardness of the composite, while the incorporation of ESP reduces these properties. For instance, the Young's modulus of composites incorporated with 3 wt.% of ESP decreased by 30.7% compared with the pure composite, while increasing the weight fraction of ESP up to 6% decreased the Young's modulus by 34.8%. Moreover, the trained ANN indicated that HNTs have a more significant effect on reducing the plasticity index than ESP.
