      • PHYTOREMEDIATION POTENTIAL OF IXORA COCCINEA IN PB CONTAMINATED SOILS

Sacramento. Jan Vincent A,Javier. Karlo John,Geronimo. Franz Kevin F,Cleofas. Dolores. S.D,Rubio Christabel Jane P. 한국방재학회 2017 Journal of Disaster Management Vol.2 No.3

Numerous methods have been operated to relieve the environment of contamination of heavy metals. One of which is the use of chemical and thermal technology. However, this method was proven to be costly and operates far less than the optimum. It was discovered that plants can detoxify soils, therefore resulting in cleaner groundwater free from heavy metal contamination, a method referred to as phytoremediation. In this study, the ability of Ixora Coccinea to aid in phytoremediation was evaluated. Sixty-day old Ixora Coccinea plants were replanted in pots containing 1.3kg of soil mixed thoroughly with a lead (Pb) and distilled water solution with a concentration of 16.9 mg/ml. Every 15 days, for a period of 90 days, three plants were harvested for laboratory analysis testing. The samples were acid digested and analyzed of its Pb content using Inductively Coupled Plasma (ICP). The reduction of Pb gradually increased with respect to time, attaining a maximum of 38.1% reduction on day 60 of culture, but declined afterwards. On average, the Pb uptake rate of Ixora Coccinea was 15.3%. In a patch of land, plants spaced 240mm away from each other would absorb a maximum of 127.1 mg/kg of Pb with a depth of 200mm.

Ethnobotanical knowledge of medicinal plants used in the treatment of male infertility in southern Benin

        Agbodjento Eric,Klotoé Jean Robert,Sacramento Téniola Isabelle,Dougnon Victorien,Frontenel Lopez Tchabi,Déguénon Esther,Atègbo Jean-Marc 경희대학교 융합한의과학연구소 2021 Oriental Pharmacy and Experimental Medicine Vol.21 No.4

Infertility is a concern for couples, families and society. In almost half of the cases, it is due to male infertility. This infertility, in developing countries like Benin, often cured by the use of medicinal plants. This study aimed to enlist knowledge about medicinal plants used in the treatment of male infertility in southern Benin. An ethnomedicinal investigation has been conducted in southern Benin by questioning traditional healers and market herbalists using the method of semi-structured interview. Ethnopharmacological data has been analyzed by ethnobotanical indices such as informant consensus factor (ICF), frequency of citation for each plant species and contribution of each plant to drug recipes. 90 respondents including 36 market herbalists and 54 traditional healers participated in this study. Data collected allowed us to list 60 plant species belonging to 56 genera and 38 botanical families. Informants had a high degree of consensus (ICF = 0.58) on plants used for treatment of male infertility. The most plants cited by market herbalists were Garcinia kola (10.09%), Cissus populnea (10.09%), Carpolobia lutea (07.40%) and the parts of plants most used were roots and fruits. For traditional healers, Garcinia kola (10.15%), Cyperus esculentus (06.09%), Citrus aurantiifiola (06.09%) were the most plants cited and parts of plants the most used were leaves and roots. This study provided a list of medicinal plants used for the treatment of male infertility in southern Benin. Further pharmacological and toxicological studies will assess the therapeutic efficacy of these medicinal plants.

Natural Products from Garcinia brasiliensis as Leishmania Protease Inhibitors

        Ivan O. Pereira,Diego M. Assis,Maria A. Juliano,Rodrigo L.O.R. Cunha,Clara L. Barbieri,Luis V.S. do Sacramento,Marcos J. Marques,Marcelo H. dos Santos 한국식품영양과학회 2011 Journal of medicinal food Vol.14 No.6

The infections by protozoans of the genus Leishmania are a major worldwide health problem, with high endemicity in developing countries. The drugs of choice for the treatment of leishmaniasis are the pentavalent antimonials, which cause renal and cardiac toxicity. As part of a search for new drugs against leishmaniasis, we evaluated the in vitro Leishmania protease inhibition activity of extracts (hexanic, ethyl-acetate, and ethanolic) and fukugetin, a bioflavonoid purified from the ethyl-acetate extract of the pericarp of the fruit of Garcinia brasiliensis, a tree native to Brazilian forests. The isolated compound was characterized by using spectral analyses with nuclear magnetic resonance, mass spectroscopy, ultraviolet, and infrared techniques. The ethyl-acetate extract and the compound fukugetin showed significant activity as inhibitors of Leishmania's proteases, with mean (±SD) IC50 (50% inhibition concentration of protease activity) values of 15.0±1.3 μg/mL and 3.2±0.5 μM/mL, respectively, characterizing a bioguided assay. In addition, this isolated compound showed no activity against promastigote and amastigote forms of L. (L.) amazonensis and mammalian cells. These results suggest that fukugetin is a potent protease inhibitor of L. (L.) amazonensis and does not cause toxicity in mammalian or Leishmania cells in vitro. This study provides new perspectives on the development of novel drugs that have leishmanicidal activity obtained from natural products and that target the parasite's proteases.

Carcass characteristics and meat quality of lambs that are fed diets with palm kernel cake

        Rozilda da Conceicao dos Santos,Daiany Iris Gomes,Kaliandra Souza Alves,Rafael Mezzomo,Luis Rennan Sampaio Oliveira,Darley Oliveira Cutrim,Samara Bianca Moraes Sacramento,Elizanne de Moura Lima,Franci 아세아·태평양축산학회 2017 Animal Bioscience Vol.30 No.6

Objective: The aim was to evaluate carcass characteristics, cut yield, and meat quality in lambs that were fed different inclusion levels of palm kernel cake. Methods: Forty-five woolless castrated male Santa Inês crossbred sheep with an initial average body weight of 23.16±0.35 kg were used. The experimental design was a completely randomized design with five treatments, with palm kernel cake in the proportions of 0.0%, 7.5%, 15.0%, 22.5%, and 30.0% with nine replications per treatment. After slaughter, the gastrointestinal tract was weighed when it was full, after which it was then emptied. The heart, liver, kidney, pancreas perirenal fat were also collected and weighed. The carcass was split into two identical longitudinal halves and weighed to determine the quantitative and qualitative characteristics. Results: The empty body weight, carcass weight and yield, and fat thickness decreased linearly (p<0.05) as a function of palm kernel inclusion in the diet. There was no difference (p>0.05) for the rib eye area of animals that were fed palm kernel cake. There was a reduction in the commercial cut weight (p<0.05), except for the neck weight. The weights of the heart, liver, kidney fat, small, and large intestine, and gastrointestinal tract decreased. Nevertheless, the gastrointestinal content was greater for animals that were fed increasing levels of cake. For the other organs and viscera, differences were not verified (p>0.05). The sarcomere length decreased linearly (p<0.05), although an effect of the inclusion of palm kernel cake was not observed in other meat quality variables. It is worth noting that the red staining intensity, indicated as A, had a tendency to decrease (p = 0.050). Conclusion: The inclusion of palm kernel cake up to 30% in the diet does not lead to changes in meat quality characteristics, except for sarcomere length. Nevertheless, carcass quantitative characteristics decrease with the use of palm kernel cake.
