      • Tourist Destination Selections Shaped by Lifestyle

        Santillan,Katerine May M,Dela Cruz,Rexter Marco G,Paredes,Neil Owen M,Tabuyo,Jimford 한국문화관광학회 2019 문화관광연구 Vol.21 No.2

This study focused on the significant differences in choosing a destination brought by the socio-demographics of DLSU-D employees using a theoretical framework formulated in relation to Push-Pull theory. Unlike other studies, this considered all the demographics in examining its differences. Through Analysis of Variance and t-test, income and religion were known to show a significant difference in destination selection. Moreover, the results reveal that international destinations appeal to the respondents the most. The demographics that brought a significant difference in choosing a destination were religion and trip expenditure. In line with this, a Vietnam tour package is proposed.

Origin of the Cometary Structure of the HVCs: 3D-MHD Numerical Simulations

SANTILLAN ALFREDO,FRANCO JOSE,KIM JONGSOO The Korean Astronomical Society 2001 Journal of The Korean Astronomical Society Vol.34 No.4

Here were continue the MHD study started by Santillan et al (1999) for the interaction of high-velocity clouds (HVCs) with the magnetized thick gaseous disk of our Galaxy. We use the MHD code ZEUS-3D and perform 3D-numerical simulations of this interaction, and study the formation of head-tail structures in HVCs. Our results show that clouds located above 2 kpc from mindplane present velocity and column density gradients with a cometary structure that is similar to those observed in 21 cm emission

INTERACTION OF HIGH VELOCITY CLOUDS WITH MAGNETIZED DISKS: THREE-DIMENSIONAL NUMERICAL SIMULATIONS

SANTILLAN ALFREDO,FRANCO JOSE,KIM JONGSOO The Korean Astronomical Society 2004 Journal of The Korean Astronomical Society Vol.37 No.4

High-velocity clouds are flows of neutral hydrogen, located at high galactic latitudes, with large velocities ($[VLSR]{\ge} 100 km/s$) that do not match a simple model of circular rotation for our Galaxy. Numerical simulations have been performed for the last 20 years to study the details of their evolution, and their possible interaction with the Galactic disk. Here we present a brief review of the models that have been already published, and describe newly performed three-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic simulations.

Livelihoods for women in Mindanao : A post-conflict reconstruction approach

        Karina R. SANTILLAN 이화여자대학교 아시아여성학센터 2015 Asian Journal of Women's Studies(AJWS) Vol.21 No.1

The conflict inMindanao has displaced over two million people in the period 2000 to 2009. As it subsides, the displaced return to their communities and begin the process of reconstruction. This paper studies how women contributed to the post-conflict reconstruction of Mindanao by engaging in livelihood activities. It explores five different livelihood intervention projects implemented in Mindanao between 2000 and 2010. The extent of women’s contribution to post-conflict reconstruction is measured by identifying the benefits gained at household and community levels, generated by women’s livelihood work. I argue that women’s participation in such activities have led to economic, social and political reconstruction of the communities affected by in Mindanao. This paper also compares the women’s livelihoods approach with other reconstruction strategies. It also illustrates that interventions for reconstruction therefore must include livelihood programs that encourage women’s participation, as exemplified by the experience of Mindanao.

Dense mullite from attrition milled kyanite and α-alumina

Joaquin Aguilar-Santillan,Heberto Balmori-Ramirez,Richard C. Bradt 한양대학교 세라믹연구소 2007 Journal of Ceramic Processing Research Vol.8 No.1

Effects of attrition milling on the decomposition of kyanite (Al2SiO5) and its reaction with α-alumina (Al2O3) to form stoichiometric mullite (3Al2O3·2SiO2) are reported. Kyanite-alumina mixes were attrition milled for times from 1 h to 12 h. With increasing milling time, the kyanite decomposition was accelerated and secondary mullite formation from the reaction between the rejected silica and the added alumina was enhanced. Milling reduced the decomposition expansion from +15.0% to +0.1% and the final contraction or densification from +2.5% to −13.7%. During firing complete mullite formation occurred after firing at only 1623 K/1h (1350oC/1 h) to produce a dense mullite ceramic with a fine grain size (~1 μm). TURBULENCE IN THE OUTSKIRTS OF THE MILKY WAY

Sanchez-Salcedo, F.J.,Santillan, A.,Franco, Jose The Korean Astronomical Society 2007 Journal of The Korean Astronomical Society Vol.40 No.4

In external galaxies, the velocity dispersion of the atomic hydrogen gas shows a remarkably flat distribution with the galactocentric radius. This has been a long-standing puzzle because if the gas velocity dispersion is due to turbulence caused by supernova explosions, it should decline with radius. After a discussion on the role of spiral arms and ram pressure in driving interstellar turbulence in the outer parts of galactic disks, we argue that the constant bombardment by tiny high-velocity halo clouds can be a significant source of random motions in the outer disk gas. Recent observations of the flaring of H I in the Galaxy are difficult to explain if the dark halo is nearly spherical as the survival of the streams of tidal debris of Sagittarius dwarf spheroidal galaxy suggests. The radial enhancement of the gas velocity dispersion (at R > 25 kpc) due to accretion of cloudy gas might naturally explain the observed flaring in the Milky Way. Other motivations and implications of this scenario have been highlighted.

      • Dendronic trimaltoside amphiphiles (DTMs) for membrane protein study

        Sadaf, Aiman,Du, Yang,Santillan, Claudia,Mortensen, Jonas S.,Molist, Iago,Seven, Alpay B.,Hariharan, Parameswaran,Skiniotis, Georgios,Loland, Claus J.,Kobilka, Brian K.,Guan, Lan,Byrne, Bernadette,Cha Royal Society of Chemistry 2017 Chemical Science Vol.8 No.12

<▼1><P>A novel amphiphile with a dendronic hydrophobic group (DTM-A6) was markedly effective at stabilizing and visualizing a GPCR-Gs complex.</P></▼1><▼2><P>The critical contribution of membrane proteins in normal cellular function makes their detailed structure and functional analysis essential. Detergents, amphipathic agents with the ability to maintain membrane proteins in a soluble state in aqueous solution, have key roles in membrane protein manipulation. Structural and functional stability is a prerequisite for biophysical characterization. However, many conventional detergents are limited in their ability to stabilize membrane proteins, making development of novel detergents for membrane protein manipulation an important research area. The architecture of a detergent hydrophobic group, that directly interacts with the hydrophobic segment of membrane proteins, is a key factor in dictating their efficacy for both membrane protein solubilization and stabilization. In the current study, we developed two sets of maltoside-based detergents with four alkyl chains by introducing dendronic hydrophobic groups connected to a trimaltoside head group, designated dendronic trimaltosides (DTMs). Representative DTMs conferred enhanced stabilization to multiple membrane proteins compared to the benchmark conventional detergent, DDM. One DTM (<I>i.e.</I>, DTM-A6) clearly outperformed DDM in stabilizing human β2 adrenergic receptor (β2AR) and its complex with Gs protein. A further evaluation of this DTM led to a clear visualization of β2AR-Gs complex <I>via</I> electron microscopic analysis. Thus, the current study not only provides novel detergent tools useful for membrane protein study, but also suggests that the dendronic architecture has a role in governing detergent efficacy for membrane protein stabilization.</P></▼2>

Nano-milling of the sillimanite mineral, kyanite, and its reactions with alumina to form mullite

        Richard C. Bradt,Joaquin Aguilar-Santillan,Heberto Balmori-Ramirez 한양대학교 세라믹연구소 2005 Journal of Ceramic Processing Research Vol.6 No.4

The sillimanite group of minerals, kyanite, andalusite and sillimanite, the three polymorphs of Al2SiO4, is a natural raw material for the production of mullite in many traditional ceramics. However, the sillimanites form at high pressures and are alumina-deficient relative to mullite. This paper addresses the effects of attrition milling kyanite, the most common of the three to the nanoscale. Additions of aluminum metal, that is then oxidized to alumina and an independent addition of pure alumina to yield a phase-pure mullite after firing, are also described. The attrition milling size reduction of natural kyanite to the nanoscale has several pronounced beneficial effects. It reduces the phase decomposition temperature, it eliminates the large volume expansion of the decomposition and it produces a highly reactive form of the rejected silica. When fired with alumina additions adjusted to the mullite stoichiometry, the resulting phase-pure mullite is a high density, fine grain size ceramic body.
