A general exergy-based environmental impact index
Sósimo E. Díaz-Méndez,José María Rodríguez-Lelis,Abel Hernández-Guerrero 대한기계학회 2011 JOURNAL OF MECHANICAL SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY Vol.25 No.8
An ecosystem is a complex system in which biotic and abiotic factors interact and influence each other both directly and indirectly. Each of these factors has to comply with a specific function in the different processes that occur inside the ecosystem, whether transporting or transforming energy or both. When anthropogenic emissions are produced, part of the useful energy of the ecosystem is used to assimilate or absorb those emissions, and the energy spent, loses its function and becomes lost work in accordance with the Gouy-Stodola theorem. Thus, the work that an ecosystem can carry out varies as a function of the lost work produced by anthropogenic sources. The permanency or loss of the ecosystem depends on how many irreversibilities it can support. The second law of thermodynamics through a systematic use of the exergy and lost work is the basis of this paper where a general environmental impact index, based on exergy, is proposed. For the purpose of this work, the ecosystem is divided in subsystems--water, soil, atmosphere, organisms and society--all of them inter-related. The ideal work variation can be obtained from each subsystem within the selected ecosystem, and a global index can be determined by adding the partial lost work of each subsystem. This global index is then used to determine the trend followed by the ecosystem from its pristine, original or environmental line base state. This environmental impact index applicability is presented for a simple combustion example.

In an attempt to castlight on the complex problems of diagnosis in severely disturbed adolescents, 101 hospitalized adolescents diagnosed schizophrenic were retrospectively compared by chart review with a matched group given other diagnoses. Symptoms appearing in at least 30% of patients in each group were subjected to chi-squ are analysis. Four symptoms (auditory hallucina tions, in a ppropriate affective behavior, ideas of reference and phsycial attacks) were reliab ly related w ith schizophrenia; six symptoms (disobedience, stealing, narc otic abuse, fighting , man ifest anxiety and hyperkine sis) distinguished the non-schizop hre nice population. An additional eleven symptoms, though not occurring as freq 니ently as the above, appeared almost exclusively in schizo phrenics. The relevalnce of these finding s to the adolescent phase of development is explored.

In this paper, we construct inequivalent Hadamard matrices based on several new and old full orthogonal designs, using circulant and symmetric block matrices. Not all orthogonal designs produce inequivalent Hadamard matrices, because the corresponding systems of equations do not possess solutions. The systems of equations arising when we search for inequivalent Hadamard matrices from full orthogonal designs using circulant and symmetric block matrices, can be concisely described using the periodic autocorrelation function of the generators of the block matrices. We use Maple, Magma, C and Unix tools to find many new inequivalent Hadamard matrices.

One hundred one hospitalized adolescents diagnosed schizophrenics were compared with an identical number of non-schizophrenics. Symptoms appearing in 30 % or more of each group were subjected to chi-square analysis with the result that a total of four symptoms were reliably identified with schizophrenics, six with non-schizophrenics. Another eleven less frequently occurring symptoms appeared to occur almost exclusively in schizophrenics.

Recently, the P2X_7 receptor has been reported to be associated with chronic inflammatory and neuropathic pain. Because Rheedia longifolia extract has analgesic and anti-inflammatory activity, we evaluated the in vitro inhibitory potential of methanol extract and fractions from its leaves on the P2X_7 purinergic receptor. The activity of P2X_7 was studied with a dye uptake assay and with the whole-cell patch clamp technique in mouse peritoneal macrophages treated with methanol extract of R. longifolia leaves and fractions. The dye uptake was evaluated by flow cytometry and fluorescence microscopy. The R. longifolia extract and some fractions showed an inhibitory effect on the P2X_7 purinergic receptor in a dose-dependent manner. The ethyl acetate fraction exhibited the most potent inhibitory effects. The methanol extract and the butanol fraction showed the same inhibitory effects, despite their lower potency compared with the other fractions. The R. longifolia extract and some of its fractions may be anti-inflammatory because of their inhibitory effect on the P2X_7 receptor. Further investigation is needed to determine the pattern of inhibition and selectivity. Chromatographic analysis indicated the presence of bisflavonoids in the methanol extract fractions. A member of this chemical family is the most probable active compound responsible for the P2X_7 inhibitory effects present in the R. Longifolia extract and fractions.

<P>High temperature low friction materials are sought for use in engines in order to reduce energy consumption of the machines. Due to the high service temperatures solid lubricating materials are necessary. This study is designed to find the optimal processing conditions for preparing these materials by pulsed electric current sintering. In this study, the Al2O3- 15wt% ZrO2(AZ) nanocomposite was modified with 3 wt% of self-lubricating component (CaF2, BaF2, MoS2, WS2, h-BN, or graphite). After the preparation of the alumina-zirconia powder mixture solid lubricant powder was added. Powders were then mixed in ethanol for 24 h, dried in a rotary evaporator, and in oven at 80°C for 24 h. The particle size distribution of the powders was established with the laser method. Powders were compacted by using pulsed electric current sintering technique at 1300 °C with 50 MPa for 5 min in vacuum. The structure of the materials was studied with XRD and SEM. Density of the compacts was measured with the Archimedes method and their hardness was evaluated by applying HV1 hardness with the instrumented indentation techniques. Their mechanical behavior was further studied with the instrumented scratch testing.</P>
