Shamanism Crossing Boundaries A Case Study of First-Generation Korean Women Living in Japan
( Ryoko Miyashita ) 서울시립대학교 도시인문학연구소 2010 Studies in Urban Humanities Vol.1 No.-
The example of K, practice of the folk custom, multicultural situation of the folk of Koreans living in Japan where food, clothing, and shelter of everyday life mixes, and creates together something that surpasses the ethnic identity. In other words, words, ceremonies, and the techniques used for ceremonies are Korean context, but spirits of the dead, Snake Gods, ancestors, Well Gods, and evil spirits as a religious service subject are Japanese context, and as this case as an example creating a new shamanism as they both mix. The ideal method of a sound articulation of the human world that directed behaviors and lives of the people before the modem nation states, formation depended on the imagination of the collaboration of a flexible inside with individuals in the center (us nature) such as like the relative master servant relationship or other networks, and the otherness (they nature). However, in many situations of life now, behavior is directed by imaging various flexible us and they. Only with a concept of people related deeply to nation states, and culture the combination as such as this example can be over looked. This example points out the consideration that the human life by the objectification of these premises restricting the viewpoint, and the point of view where dynamic otherness and collaboration forms.

The present study examined the effects of speech rate and background noise on EFL learners’ listening comprehension of film and textbook materials. The participants listened to eight different types of dialogues with different conditions in the speech rate, the background noise, and the types of learning materials, and their listening comprehensibility was measured. For the speech rate factor, either a fast or a slow speech rate was used. The background noise effect was executed by adding crowd talking noise to the dialogue. The script was adapted from either textbook materials or film materials. The results showed that each factor had an influence on learners’ listening comprehension. Though the readability, word levels, and the number of words were at the same level, the scores when textbook materials were used were significantly higher than that of the film materials. Regarding the textbook materials, they had higher scores with the slow speech than the fast speech, and also the scores in the silent condition were higher than that of the noise condition. The students’ listening comprehension score was the lowest where there was background noise and a fast speech rate.
Symptomatic Change of an Intracranial Neuroepithelial Cyst 7 Years After Its Incidental Finding
Ryoko Niwa 대한뇌종양학회 2022 Brain Tumor Research and Treatment Vol.10 No.1
A natural course of asymptomatic neuroepithelial cysts (NECs) is poorly understood due to its rarity. Herein we report a 23-year-old female patient of an asymptomatic NEC which grew in size from 1 cm to 5 cm and caused progressive symptoms seven years after its incidental finding. Partial resection of the cyst was performed for decompression and pathological examination and effectively achieved symptoms alleviation and regression of the cyst. Our case showed the importance of regular follow-up because NECs may show symptomatic change even in the late phase.
Building Connections to Protect Ethnic Education: The Chōsen Schools’ Intercultural Network
( Ryoko Okamura ),( Hosok O ) 서울대학교 규장각한국학연구원 2023 Seoul journal of Korean studies Vol.36 No.1
Prompted by the desire to return to their homeland and reclaim their ethnic identity after the end of Japan’s colonial rule, Zainichi Koreans taught their children the Korean language and educated them about their cultural heritage at what later became known as Chōsen schools. While neither the Japanese nor the South Korean government supported the Chōsen schools, the North Korean government provided them with financial support through an organization called Chongryun. Despite enduring suppression and discriminatory treatment by the Japanese government, Chōsen schools have managed to survive, becoming the largest foreign school system in Japan. This article examines the impact of activism by the Chōsen school community in protecting ethnic education and promoting intercultural engagement between Zainichi Koreans, Japanese, and foreign school communities. Focusing on three key events, the article examines efforts by the Chōsen school community to resolve bias and misunderstanding among members of the Japanese public concerning the ethnic education they provide. It argues that Zainichi Koreans’ grassroots activities have helped to build intercultural connections with local communities and other foreign schools in Japan.

Purpose: This study aimed to clarify the attitudes, behaviors, and learning experiences of first-year medical students participating in a nursing practice training aimed at enhancing their professionalism. Methods: A questionnaire survey was conducted among first-year medical students after their nursing practical training to understand their learning experiences. Descriptive statistics was performed for each questionnaire item. For free-text responses, descriptions were grouped by input data with similar content and meaning, and analyzed qualitatively. Others’ evaluation and self-evaluation were analyzed quantitatively. Results: Most students were actively engaged and fulfilled in the training. The free comments generated these categories: “nursing care,” “roles of nurses,” “patient impressions,” “multidisciplinary cooperation,” “communication,” and “what is required of physicians. On the first day, all items evaluated had higher mean scores in the others’ evaluation than in the self-evaluation. On the second day, for “maintains standards of personal appearance (including uniform, hair, and name tag),” the others’ evaluation means were higher than the self-evaluation means. T-tests showed a significant difference in “maintains standards of personal appearance (including uniform, hair, and name tag)” (t=-2.103, degrees of freedom [df]=71.104, p<0.05) and “attends to patients with a polite manner” (t=-2.087, df=74, p<0.05) for both the high and low groups. Conclusion: Greeting, appearance, communication skills, and attitude were found to be the important bases of attitude education in the nursing training ideally involving multidisciplinary professionals. The medical students were able to grasp what is required of doctors and objectively view such position from the viewpoints of nurses and patients.

Objective: Although a retro-odontoid pseudotumor associated with rheumatoid arthritis is a well-known clinical entity, little is known about retro-odontoid pseudotumors not associated with rheumatoid arthritis due to their rarity. Methods: Between 2006 and 2019, consecutive patients with nonrheumatoid pseudotumors were included and retrospectively compared with patients with rheumatoid pseudotumors. Results: Nineteen patients had nonrheumatoid pseudotumors (mean age, 73±6 years; male, 53%). All had cervical lesions including ossified anterior and posterior longitudinal ligaments with a history of cervical surgery in 5. The mean thickness of the pseudotumors at diagnosis was 8.1 mm (range, 4.2–17.2 mm). Pseudotumor thickness had a significant negative correlation with the atlantodental interval (p=0.008) and the subaxial range of motion (p=0.049). In comparison with 7 rheumatoid pseudotumor patients, nonrheumatoid pseudotumor patients were older (p=0.042), had a higher proportion of males (p=0.023), had a smaller atlantodental interval (p=0.007), and had larger pseudotumors at diagnosis (p=0.030). Of the 19 patients, 18 received posterior fixation with or without C1 laminectomy, while the other received C1 laminectomy alone. The percent pseudotumor thickness at follow-up to those at diagnosis was 91%, 77%, 68%, 46%, 58%, and 49% at 1, 3, 6, 12, 24, and 36 months after surgery, respectively. Conclusion: This study revealed markedly clinical and radiological differences between nonrheumatoid and rheumatoid pseudotumors. The main etiology for nonrheumatoid pseudotumors was subaxial cervical degeneration and ossified lesions. There were good outcomes following posterior fixation and time-dependent pseudotumor regression within 12 months.

On September 1, 1923, a massive earthquake of 7.9 magnitude struck Japan, damaging most of the Kantō region. While Japan had to recover from the devastation caused by the earthquake, it also faced a challenge: to record the violence against Korean migrants by Japanese during the earthquake. Despite the massacre of several thousands of Koreans, the Japanese government has refused to investigate the incident for over ninety years. This paper examines the relationship between the remembrances of Korean massacre among Japanese by tracing school children’s essays written after the earthquake, the government’s earthquake records, and the oral interviews conducted in postwar years. Combined with an analysis on the modifications in children’s essays and the narrative patterns in the oral interviews, it highlights the indifference of Japanese people toward the victims of massacre and argues that the Japanese government and its people in general have deliberately denied responsibility of the massacre.
