The accuracy of linear measurements of maxillary and mandibular edentulous sites in cone-beam computed tomography images with different fields of view and voxel sizes under simulated clinical conditions

        Rumpa Ganguly,Aruna Ramesh,Sarah Pagni 대한영상치의학회 2016 Imaging Science in Dentistry Vol.46 No.2

Purpose: The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of varying resolutions of cone-beam computed tomography images on the accuracy of linear measurements of edentulous areas in human cadaver heads. Intact cadaver heads were used to simulate a clinical situation. Materials and Methods: Fiduciary markers were placed in the edentulous areas of 4 intact embalmed cadaver heads. The heads were scanned with two different CBCT units using a large field of view (13 cm×16 cm) and small field of view (5 cm×8 cm) at varying voxel sizes (0.3 mm, 0.2 mm, and 0.16 mm). The ground truth was established with digital caliper measurements. The imaging measurements were then compared with caliper measurements to determine accuracy. Results: The Wilcoxon signed rank test revealed no statistically significant difference between the medians of the physical measurements obtained with calipers and the medians of the CBCT measurements. A comparison of accuracy among the different imaging protocols revealed no significant differences as determined by the Friedman test. The intraclass correlation coefficient was 0.961, indicating excellent reproducibility. Inter-observer variability was determined graphically with a Bland-Altman plot and by calculating the intraclass correlation coefficient. The Bland-Altman plot indicated very good reproducibility for smaller measurements but larger discrepancies with larger measurements. Conclusion: The CBCT-based linear measurements in the edentulous sites using different voxel sizes and FOVs are accurate compared with the direct caliper measurements of these sites. Higher resolution CBCT images with smaller voxel size did not result in greater accuracy of the linear measurements.

Interactive learning in oral and maxillofacial radiology

Aruna Ramesh,Rumpa Ganguly 대한영상치의학회 2016 Imaging Science in Dentistry Vol.46 No.3

Purpose: The use of electronic tools in teaching is growing rapidly in all fields, and there are many options to choose from. We present one such platform, Learning CatalyticsTM (LC) (Pearson, New York, NY, USA), which we utilized in our oral and maxillofacial radiology course for second-year dental students. Materials and Methods: The aim of our study was to assess the correlation between students’ performance on course exams and self-assessment LC quizzes. The performance of 354 predoctoral dental students from 2 consecutive classes on the course exams and LC quizzes was assessed to identify correlations using the Spearman rank correlation test. The first class was given in-class LC quizzes that were graded for accuracy. The second class was given out-of-class quizzes that were treated as online self-assessment exercises. The grading in the selfassessment exercises was for participation only and not accuracy. All quizzes were scheduled 1-2 weeks before the course examinations. Results: A positive but weak correlation was found between the overall quiz scores and exam scores when the two classes were combined (P<0.0001). A positive but weak correlation was likewise found between students’ performance on exams and on in-class LC quizzes (class of 2016) (P<0.0001) as well as on exams and online LC quizzes (class of 2017) (P<0.0001). Conclusion: It is not just the introduction of technological tools that impacts learning, but also their use in enabling an interactive learning environment. The LC platform provides an excellent technological tool for enhancing learning by improving bidirectional communication in a learning environment.

The Livelihood of Riverine People in Rural Bangladesh: Insights from climate vulnerable context

        M Zulfikar Rahman,Rumpa Rani Kundu,Md. 라미루 라이한,Mohammad Golam Farouque,타미나 첨키,Md Nazirul Islam SARKER,Toshihiro Hattori,허창덕 영남대학교 박정희새마을연구원 2023 새마을학연구 Vol.8 No.1

This study assesses the vulnerabilities and determines the livelihood status of individuals living in riverine areas. Additionally, it explores the relationships between selected characteristics of the riverine population and their vulnerability-based livelihood status. Data were collected from 70 heads of households residing in the Narail district of Bangladesh. To develop a scale for assessing vulnerability, a Focus Group Discussion was conducted to identify potential vulnerability indicators. Pearson's product-moment correlation coefficient (r) was calculated to investigate the connections between respondents' characteristics and their livelihood status within the context of vulnerability. Results revealed that the majority of respondents (90 percent) faced a moderate level of vulnerability in their living conditions. The primary vulnerabilities observed in the area included feelings of insecurity due to unsafe infrastructure, displacement caused by riverbank erosion, and disruptions to income opportunities. Regarding livelihood status, the majority of respondents (82.9%) fell into the medium category. Notably, there was considerable variation in different livelihood assets, with a significant proportion (80%) of respondents having low economic capital. Among the selected characteristics of the riverine population, including household size, household assets, household farm size, annual household income, and credit received, significant positive relationships were found with their vulnerability-based livelihood status. However, no significant relationships were observed between the remaining characteristics, namely age, years of schooling, organizational participation, decision-making ability, innovativeness, and vulnerability-based livelihood status. This study emphasizes the urgent need for interventions to address the vulnerabilities faced by riverine communities, including improving infrastructure safety, reducing riverbank erosion, and developing sustainable earning opportunities.

Suitable combination of promoter and micellar catalyst for kilo fold rate acceleration on propanol to propionaldehyde conversion in aqueous media

Aniruddha Ghosh,Bidyut Saha,Rumpa Saha 한국공업화학회 2014 Journal of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Vol.20 No.1

Oxidation of propanol by chromic acid produces propionaldehyde under kinetic condition [propa-nol]T≫ [Cr(VI)]T. This oxidation reaction is performed also in presence of micellar catalysts (anionic, cationic and neutral) and hetero-aromatic nitrogen bases promoters (picolinic acid, 2,20-bipyridine,1,10-phenanthroline) in aqueous media. The product is confirmed by 2,4-DNP test and 1H NMRspectroscopy. Anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS), neutral surfactant triton X-100 (TX-100) accelerated the reaction both in presence and absence of promoters whereas cationic surfactant Ncetylpyridinium chloride (CPC) inhibited the reaction. Combination of SDS and bipy is found to be themost efficient for this oxidation.

Merkel cell carcinoma in the community setting: a case report

        Cameron M. Callaghan,Rumpa Amornmarn 대한방사선종양학회 2018 Radiation Oncology Journal Vol.36 No.2

Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) is a rare neuroendocrine tumor of the skin initially believed to arise from the Merkel cells. In the community setting a general radiation oncologist may only encounter this pathology in a handful of cases over the course of their career. Due to the low incidence of this malignancy, few prospective randomized controlled trials have ever been conducted and therefore guidelines are based on relatively lower levels of evidence upon which the clinical recommendations are made. We discuss the case of a female in her 90s presenting with a classic MCC primary lesion, as well as satellite lesions proximal to both the primary and the draining regional lymph nodes with no evidence of nodal involvement. Here we discuss the presentation, management, treatment planning, underlying pathology, results and sequelae of treatment. We also review new treatment modalities, and the most current staging systems and guidelines.

Coincidence of calcified carotid atheromatous plaque, osteoporosis, and periodontal bone loss in dental panoramic radiographs

        Aruna Ramesh,Sheila Soroushian,Rumpa Ganguly 대한영상치의학회 2013 Imaging Science in Dentistry Vol.43 No.4

Purpose: This study was performed to assess the correlation of calcified carotid atheromatous plaque (CCAP), the mandibular cortical index, and periodontal bone loss in panoramic radiographs. Materials and Methods: One hundred eighty-five panoramic radiographs with CCAP and 234 without this finding were evaluated by 3 observers for the presence of osseous changes related to osteoporosis and periodontal bone loss. Chi-squared and Mann-Whitney U tests were used to compare the two groups for an association of CCAP with the mandibular cortical index and periodontal bone loss, respectively. Results: There was a statistically significant coincidence of CCAP and osseous changes related to osteopenia/osteoporosis, with a p-value ⁄0.001. There was no statistically significant coincidence of CCAP and periodontal bone loss. When comparing the 2 groups, “With CCAP” and “Without CCAP”, there was a statistically significant association with the mean body mass index (BMI), number of remaining teeth, positive history of diabetes mellitus, and vascular accidents. There was no statistically significant association with gender or a history of smoking. Conclusion: This study identified a possible concurrence of CCAP and mandibular cortical changes secondary to osteopenia/osteoporosis in panoramic radiographs. This could demonstrate the important role of dental professionals in screening for these systemic conditions, leading to timely and appropriate referrals resulting in early interventions and thus improving overall health.
