        Identity Grafting: The Use of Ethnic Symbols among Korean Chinese Youth in Interethnic Interaction

        China is a multiethnic country with a population of 56 ethnic groups, including the Han Chinese majority and 55 ethnic minorities, over 30 of which are cross-border ethnic groups. Members of the Korean Chinese cross-border ethnic minority can trace their migration back to the mid-nineteenth century when people migrated from the Korean peninsula and settled in the historically volatile region of Manchuria. As Korean Chinese immigrants were the regional forerunners of transnational migration, prior academic interest has been primarily focused on how unskilled Korean Chinese labourers and marriage migrants experience confusion, frustration, and contradiction when confronted with their ancestral homeland (the Korean peninsula) and natal homeland (China) and how they grapple with a sense of a torn identity. However, there is limited knowledge regarding the generation of Korean Chinese youth and how they balance the Chinese and Korean aspects of their identities in daily interethnic interactions in China. This article conceptualises interethnic interaction as a process of identity grafting, wherein ethnic symbols are used by Korean Chinese youth to balance cultural differences and proximity when interacting with individuals of different ethnic backgrounds. Via a thematic analysis of ethnographic data collected at a multiethnic university campus in China and through interviews with 10 Korean Chinese university students, this article reveals that Korean Chinese university students draw on ethnic symbols to reconcile cultural differences in various ways, fostering a differential sense of ethnic belonging. The Korean ethnic minority has experienced increased geographical mobility since the late 1980s, with younger generations growing up in diversified surroundings due to migration from ethnic enclaves to coastal or metropolitan areas in China. This study adds to the existing literature by exploring the persistence of Korean Chinese ethnicity among this generation of young people and their ways of practising symbolic ethnicity.

        Adsorption properties of silica surface-grafted with a salicylhydroxamic acid-functionalized polymer toward lead ions

        Salicylhydroxamic acid (SHA), functionalized composite chelating adsorbing material SHA-PHEMA/SiO2, was prepared through the nucleophilic substitution reaction of 5-chloromethyl-salicylhydroxamic acid with poly (2- hydroethyl methacrylate) (PHEMA) modified silica gel particles PHEMA/SiO2. The SHA-PHEMA/SiO2 composites were characterized by FT-IR, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and nitrogen absorption. The adsorption behavior, adsorption thermodynamic, and adsorption mechanism of SHA-PHEMA/SiO2 for Pb2+ ions were studied, and the pH value of the medium on the adsorption property and chelating adsorption ability of SHA-PHEMA/SiO2 for Pb2+ ions was also investigated. The experimental results show that SHA-PHEMA/SiO2 possesses strong chelating adsorption ability for Pb2+ ions, and the adsorption capacity for Pb2+ ions at 308K reached 57 mg/g. The adsorption process is a chemical adsorption process driven by entropy, and the adsorption capacity increases with rising temperature. In pH range that can inhibit the hydrolysis of heavy metal ions, increasing the pH value of the medium strengthens the adsorption ability of SHA-PHEMA/SiO2 toward Pb2+ ions. The adsorption behavior is monomolecular and follows Langmuir isotherm. The adsorption capacity is almost the same after ten consecutive adsorption- desorption experiments of SHA-PHEMA/SiO2 for Pb2+ ions, indicating that SHA-PHEMA/SiO2 has excellent elution property and reusability.

Relying on its unique cultural and resource advantages, the ethnic characteristic cultural industry has comprehensively empowered rural revitalization from aspects such as “industrial prosperity, ecological livability, rural civilization, effective governance, and affluent living”, forming industrial empowerment models such as “culture+digital technology”, “culture+tourism”, “culture+agriculture”, and “culture+public services”. On the basis of grasping the characteristics of the cultural industry, effective measures such as optimizing the supply and demand sides of the cultural industry, cultivating creative composite talents, leading the digital construction of the cultural industry, and promoting the ecological development of rural areas are supposed to take to help empower the national cultural industry to revitalize rural areas.

        중국 예비유아교사가 생각하는 가르침의 의미

        목적 본 연구는 중국의 예비유아교사가 가진 가르침의 의미가 무엇인지를 드러내는 데에 그 목적이 있다. 방법 이를 위하여 중국 길림성 S지역 4년제 사범대학 유아교육과의 3학기 유아교사론을 수강하고 있는 예비교사 102명 중에서 지속적으로 수업에 참여한 90명의 학생을 연구 참여자로 하여 주제토의, 이미지분석, 유치원 수업 동영상 분석 등의 다양한 방법으로 자료를 수집하였다. 결과 중국 예비유아교사가 생각하는 가르침의 의미는 단지 목적을 위한 수단이 아니라 그 자체로서의 선을 추구하는 관계적 실천이며 반응하는 능력인 ‘쌍방향 상호작용’이었으며 학습자에게 나아가야 할 방향을 알려주고 판단해야 할 방향을 전수해주는 ‘사회적 책임과 사명’이었다. 또한 가르침은 ‘일상의 문제해결 상황과 직접적으로 연관된 활동’으로서 실천적 지식이 보다 강조되고 개발되어야 할 필요성이 드러났으며, ‘긍정적이고도 조화로운 정서와 연관된 행위’로 가르침에 대한 인식과 긍정적 직업정체성의 중요함이 나타났다. 결론 교사는 진정한 의미로 학습자에 대해 반응하고 관계적 실천을 추구하여야 하며 교사 스스로 가르침의 의미를 인식하고 판단할 수 있는 능력을 가지고 실천적 지식이 능동적으로 개발되도록 교육과정을 변화시켜나가야 한다. 가르침의 의미를 파악하는 것은 긍정적인 교사 역할 수행과 관련 있으므로 교사 역할을 수행하기 전 예비 유아교사 단계에서 가르침의 신념에 대해 인식하는 것이 중요하며 가르침에 대한 철학적 성찰이 필요함을 시사한다. Objectives This study aims to understand preservice kindergarten teachers’ belief systems on teaching and their recognized meaning of teaching so that they can redefine their own perceptions of teaching. Methods To this end, this study selected 90 consistently participatory students out of a total of 102 students enrolled in the childhood education program’s third term early childhood teacher education course at a 4-year college of education in the S district of Jilin province, China, and collected data through multiple methods including conducting discussions, image analysis, and kindergarten class video analysis. Results The study’s results showed that Chinese preservice kindergarten teachers’ understanding of the meaning of teaching can be broadly categorized into: two-way interaction, social responsibility and duty, problem-solving situations in daily life and directly related activities, and optimistic and harmonious emotional development and related activities. Conclusions The findings show that first, teaching is not merely a means to an end but an act pursuing goodwill in and of itself, is a practical execution that goes beyond being a tool, and is a “relative” practical execution that requires the responsibility of having the ability to react. Second, as an act that tells the learner the direction they should go in and passes on an understanding of the directionality learners ought to make judgments with, teaching is an act that requires responsibility and a sense of duty. Thus, the meaning of teaching to a teacher must expand and teachers must develop the ability to independently recognize and judge the way they teach. Third, as the act of teaching is related to problem-solving in daily life, practical knowledge must be emphasized and developed. Fourth, since the act of teaching is related to optimistic and harmonious emotional development, the perception of teaching and a positive job identity are very important. The conclusion of this study suggests that recognizing teaching morality before executing the teaching role at the preservice kindergarten teacher stage and making philosophical reflections about teaching are necessary.

        Numerical simulation of a regenerative thermal oxidizer for volatile organic compounds treatment

        As regulations governing the control of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) have become increasingly stringent in China, regenerative thermal oxidizers (RTOs) have been more frequently applied in medium- and high-concentration VOCs treatments. However, due to the lack of existing RTO-related research, experience remains a dominant factor for industrial application. This paper thus aimed to establish a model for industrial RTOs, using a transient simulation method and thermal equilibrium model to simulate the internal velocities and temperature distributions of an RTO across multiple cycles. A comparison showed an error of less than 5% between most correlating simulated and experimental measurement points, verifying that the simulation method was accurate. After verification, the velocity and temperature fields inside the RTO were simulated to study the uniformity of temperature and velocity within the packed beds: both fields displayed high uniformity after gas flowed through the honeycomb regenerator. The effects of air volume, VOCs concentrations, and valve switching times on the oxidation chamber temperature, RTO outlet temperature, and thermal efficiency (as well as their averages) were studied. The VOCs removal rate in this study was constantly above 98%, and the average thermal efficiency reached 90%.

        Review of three black fungus gnat species (Diptera: Sciaridae) from greenhouses in China Three greenhouse sciarids from China

        Bradysia odoriphaga Yang et Zhang, 1985 syn. nov. is proposed as new synonym of Bradysia cellarum Frey 1948, and Lycoriella pleuroti Yang et Zhang, 1987 syn. nov. as new synonym of Lycoriella ingenua (Dufour, 1839). These results were confirmed by cytochrome oxidase I (COI) DNA barcodes, neighbor-joining (NJ) trees, and a revision of their characters. Illustrations of the morphological characteristics of these two species are provided. Former published records of Bradysia difformis Frey 1948 fromChina accord with Bradysia impatiens (Johannsen, 1912), as also shown by COI NJ tree in this paper.
