      • Philosophical Practice and Scientific Research : Controversies and Proposals

Roxana Kreimer 강원대학교 인문과학연구소 2012 Journal of Humanities Therapy Vol.3 No.-

Participants in this Master Class can expect to have more tools for Philosophical Counseling based on scientific evidence. There will be an analysis of case studies and a discussion of some skills that can be used to think about different kinds of problems. We will recommend the work of some researchers whose observational and experimental studies offer relevant insights about philosophical topics, and we will propose the development of a new field of study that can be extremely valuable for Philosophical Counseling, suggesting experimental study designs that can enrich the discipline with resources and procedures that are not based merely on personal opinions or on the authority of philosophical traditions. Finally, we will review some cultural and philosophical assumptions about happiness that have been supported by scientific evidence, and others that might be harmful if they are uncritically adopted by the consultant and/or the philosophical counselor.

Multifocal kaposiform hemangioendothelioma of soft tissue with bilateral pulmonary involvement in an adolescent

        Roxana Azma,Samin Alavi,Maliheh Khoddami,Mohammad Taghi Arzanian,Armin Nourmohammad,Sadaf Esteghamati 대한소아청소년과학회 2014 Clinical and Experimental Pediatrics (CEP) Vol.57 No.11

Kaposiform hemangioendothelioma (KHE) is a rare, locally aggressive vascular tumor of intermediate malignancy with resemblance to Kaposi sarcoma. It occurs predominantly in pediatric age groups as a cutaneous lesion with focal infiltration into the adjacent soft tissue and bone. Although visceral involvement is very uncommon, several cases with bone, retroperitoneal, or mediastinal involvement have been described. KHE has been reported to occasionally occur in unusual sites such as the thymus, tonsils, larynx, paranasal sinuses, deltoid muscle, spleen, uterine cervix, thoracic spine, and even the breast. Multifocal KHE is an extremely rare entity with few reports available in the literature, none of which describes pulmonary involvement. Herein, we report a unique case of multifocal KHE in a 13-year-old boy presenting with a huge soft tissue mass in the upper extremity complicated by bilateral pulmonary nodules that developed into large, necrotic tumor masses.

      • The Impact of Authority Figures in our Beliefs Experimental Studies on the “Author’s Bias”

Roxana Kreimer 강원대학교 인문과학연구소 2016 Journal of Humanities Therapy Vol.7 No.2

We've explored in the framework of Experimental Philosophy how our judgements and political ideas as fair or unfair tend to be biased by the opinions of prestigious figures. In the first study, subjects were randomly assigned to two groups, and they were asked to put a score of agreement (1-10) to several statements. In one group (“anonymous condition”) subjects didn't know the author of the statement, while in the other group (“author condition”) the statement was attributed to a prestigious person. We've found that the statements attributed to prestigious persons received higher scores than the anonymous statements. In the second study, a similar procedure was employed, and we've found that subjects assigned lower scores to the statements that were attributed to politicians that they were unwilling to vote. In the third study, we've explored people's opinions about two controversial events in Argentina that were interpreted in different ways by politicians of the governing party and of the opposition party, and we've found that most subjects agreed with the views adopted by their preferred party, even if they had little to do with politics. In the fourth study, subjects were randomly assigned to two groups (one group received previous information about the bias, while the other group didn't receive that information), and we've found that when people were aware of this “author's bias”, its influence decreased. The implications of this bias in relation to people's judgements about justice will be analyzed.

Strength and Corrosion Studies of Mortars Added with Pozzolan in Sulphate Ions Environment

Roxana I. Martínez-Rosales,Juana María Miranda-Vidales,Lilia Narváez-Hernández,Juan Manuel Lozano de Poo 대한토목학회 2020 KSCE JOURNAL OF CIVIL ENGINEERING Vol.24 No.12

The pozzolanic materials have the capacity to modify the performance of Portland cement (PC) mortars. When they are used as supplementary materials, the physical-chemical properties such as compressive-strength and resistance to aggressive environments (chloride, sulphate, acids) are improved. In this article, a study was carried out to evaluate the effects of the addition of two natural pozzolans: volcanic pumice and zeolite. Both used as substitutes for PC in mortars based on cement, considering mechanical strength and the aggressive effect of sulphate ions. Furthermore, the electrochemical behavior of the steel rebar embedded in these mortars was studied during 730 days of exposition to aggressive conditions. The results revealed that the development of the compressive strength of mortars with pozzolans added reached similar values to the reference mortar. It was possible to observe that the addition of the pozzolan suppresses the ettringite formation proportionally to the pozzolan content. The corrosion resistance of the steel improves with the addition of pozzolans after 730 days of exposition at sulphate environment. The results of this study revealed the feasibility to use natural pozzolan as an additive during the preparation of cement up to 25% without significant changes of the physical-chemical properties of the mortars.

      • A micropump controlled by EWOD: wetting line energy and velocity effects

Shabani, Roxana,Cho, Hyoung Jin Royal Society of Chemistry 2011 Lab on a chip Vol.11 No.20

<P>A Laplace pressure gradient between a droplet and a liquid meniscus was utilized to create an on-demand constant flow rate capillary pump. Electrowetting on dielectric was implemented to induce the pressure gradient in the microchannel. For an initial droplet volume of 0.3 μL and a power of 12 nW a constant flow rate of 0.02 μL s−1 was demonstrated. The effects of the wetting line energy on the static contact angle and the wetting line velocity on the dynamic contact angle in the pump operation were studied. Sample loading on-demand could be achieved by regulating an electric potential.</P> <P>Graphic Abstract</P><P>We present an EWOD micropump with a constant flow rate, and the effects of contact line energy and the velocity on regulating its flow rate. <IMG SRC='http://pubs.rsc.org/services/images/RSCpubs.ePlatform.Service.FreeContent.ImageService.svc/ImageService/image/GA?id=c1lc20440h'> </P>

Vitamin D Fortified Bread Improves Pain and Physical Function Domains of Quality of Life in Nursing Home Residents

Anca Roxana Costan,Carmen Vulpoi,Veronica Mocanu 한국식품영양과학회 2014 Journal of medicinal food Vol.17 No.5

Nursing home residents have severe vitamin D deficiency and increased risk of falls and fractures. These individuals may need 125 lg of vitamin D3 to achieve desirable 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] concentrations to improve overall health. We evaluated health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in 45 nursing home residents (28 women and 17 men, aged 58–89 years) with 25(OH)D concentrations < 50nM who consumed daily one bun that had been fortified with 125 lg vitamin D3. The Romanian version of Questionnaire of the European Foundation for Osteoporosis (QUALEFFO-41) was applied at baseline and after 12 months. Data were analyzed using repeated measures analyses of variance (ANOVA). After one year supplementation, serum 25(OH)D reached optimal status ( > 75 nM) and bone health has improved significantly. Nursing home residents who consumed daily bread fortified with 125 lg vitamin D3 reported significant (P = .02 for the effect of time) improvement in HRQoL (total score of QUALEFFO-41). The interaction time x treatment was also statistically significant on pain (P = .04), daily activities (P = .02), and locomotion (P = .04). To ensure the serum concentrations of 25(OH)D recommended by medical groups for bone- and general-health in the older nursing residents, the practical experience shows that much higher amounts of vitamin D3 are required. Fortification of bread and cereals is a feasible way to improve vitamin D nutrition.

      • Estimation of Completeness of Cancer Registration for Patients Referred to Shiraz Selected Centers through a Two Source Capture Re-capture Method, 2009 Data

Sharifian, Roxana,SedaghatNia, Mohammad Hossein,Nematolahi, Mohtram,Zare, Najaf,Barzegari, Saeed Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2015 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.16 No.13

Background: Cancer has important social consequences with cancer registration as the basis of moving towards prevention. The present study aimed to estimate the completeness of registration of the ten most common cancers in patients referred to selected hospitals in Shiraz, Iran by using capture-recapture method. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional analytical study was performed in 2014 based on the data of 2009, on a total of 4,388 registered cancer patients. After cleaning data from two sources, using capture-recapture common findings were identified. Then, the percentage of the completeness of cancer registration was estimated using Chapman and Chao methods. Finally, the effects of demographic and treatment variables on the completeness of cancer registration were investigated. Results: The results showed that the percentages of completeness of cancer registration in the selected hospitals of Shiraz were 58.6% and 58.4%, and influenced by different variables. The age group between 40-49 years old was the highest represented and for the age group under 20 years old was the lowest for cancer registration. Breast cancer had the highest registration level and after that, thyroid and lung cancers, while colorectal cancer had the lowest registration level. Conclusions: According to the results, the number of cancers registered was very few and it seems that factors like inadequate knowledge of some doctors, imprecise diagnosis about the types of cancer, incorrectly filled out medical documents, and lack of sufficient accuracy in recording data on the computer cause errors and defects in cancer registration. This suggests a necessity to educate and teach doctors and other medical workers about the methods of documenting information related to cancer and also conduct additional measures to improve the cancer registration system.

Age of Postmenopause Women: Effect of Soy Isoflavone in Lipoprotein and Inflammation Markers

Gladys Roxana Rocha Barrasa,Natalia González Cañete,Luis Emilio Valladares Boasi 대한폐경학회 2018 대한폐경학회지 Vol.24 No.3

Objectives: Menopause is associated with adverse metabolic changes in plasma lipoprotein and inflammation markers. Estrogens have beneficial effects on lipid metabolism and inflammation. Isoflavones (ISO) have structurally similar to estradiol. Our objective was analize the effect of soy-ISO on serum lipid and inflammatory markers (sP-selectin and sCD40L) in postmenopausal women. Methods: A 12-week randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled intervention with soy-ISO (50  mg, twice daily) was conducted in 35 healthy postmenopausal women (55-72 years old). The women were divided in 2 groups: 20 were allocated to soy-ISO, and 15 to a placebo group. Results: The changes of total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides, low-density lipoproteins-cholesterol (LDL-C), high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol, Apo-A1, sP-selectin and sCD40L in 2 groups before and after 12-week treatment showed no statistical significance. In subgroup analysis, soy-ISO supplementation significantly decreased the levels of TC, LDL-C and sCD40L in women under 65 years old, and with null effects on serum lipid and inflammation markers in women over 65 years old. Conclusions: Soy-ISO did not significantly favorable effects on the lipid profile and inflammatory markers in postmenopausal women. However, in women under 65 years of age, soy-ISO significantly decreased the TC, LDL-C and sCD40L, whereas, no effects on lipid profile and inflammation markers in women over 65 years old were observed.
