Screening, Characterization, and Biocatalytic Capacity of Lipases Producing Wild Yeasts from Brazil Biomes

Rosana Goldbeck,Francisco Maugeri Filho 한국식품과학회 2013 Food Science and Biotechnology Vol.22 No.suppl1

The main goal of this work was to select and characterize lipase producing wild yeasts isolated from different biomes of Brazil. A total of 372 wild yeasts were tested for their lipase producing potential and 3 strains were selected and characterized according to their substrate specificity, pH, and temperature effects and biocatalytic capacity for synthesis in organic media. For the AC02strain, the optimal enzymatic conditions were pH 7.0 and temperature 44ºC, whilst for AAV1 strain, pH 7.0 was also better, but the optimal temperature was 47ºC, and for AY3strain the optimal temperature was 37ºC and pH 6.6. About substrate specificity, the lipase from AY3 strain showed higher specificity for short-chain triglycerides. The AC02strain showed the highest lipolytic activity among the 3selected, and was molecularly identified by sequencing the ITS1-5.8S-ITS2 and D1/D2 domains of the subunit (26 S)ribosomal DNA as Metschnikowia pulcherrima.

Correction of Class III malocclusion with alternate rapid maxillary expansions and constrictions using a hybrid hyrax–mandibular miniplate combination and simultaneous orthodontic treatment: A case report

        Rosana Martínez-Smit,Juan Fernando Aristizabal,Valfrido Antonio Pereira Filho 대한치과교정학회 2019 대한치과교정학회지 Vol.49 No.5

In this report, we describe the successful use of alternate rapid maxillary expansions and constrictions with a hybrid hyrax–mandibular miniplate combination and simultaneous orthodontic treatment for the management of severe Class III malocclusion due to maxillary hypoplasia in an 11-year-old girl. The devices were removed after 20 months of treatment, and the family was instructed about a careful control and retention program that should be followed in accordance with the patient’s growth. The final result included the correction of Class III malocclusion with adequate function and excellent facial esthetics, which restored the patient’s self-esteem and provided personal motivation. The outcomes showed good stability after 24 months of retention. The decrease in the duration of active treatment is the most important finding from the present case. Considering that facial esthetics in adolescence is a determining factor for the development of a personality and interpersonal relationships, we recommend the use of this protocol for growing patients, who will exhibit not only an improved physical appearance but also a better quality of life.

International Exhibitions as a Cultural Link: Conservation of Cultural Heritage

( Rosana Calderón Martin Del Campo ) 부경대학교 글로벌지역학연구소 2018 Journal of Global and Area Studies(JGA) Vol.2 No.1

The cultural heritage of a nation is everything that affirms the values, ways of life, representations of the world, ideas, knowledge, customs, traditions and dreams of the social group that composes it. Cultural heritage, therefore, encompasses both materials and immaterial entity which includes all the possible visions to illustrate how human beings are linked to different customs, social status, educational levels, ethnic origins within a society. The preservation of cultural heritage is not only based on national and international legal provisions, but also on direct activities to prevent, stop, and, reverse the physical deterioration of archaeological, historical and artistic monuments. Moreover, its preservation only makes sense if it fulfills the function as a binding element of rootedness to the present and future generation. Mexico is a country of great cultural and ethnic diversity, so its cultural heritage is extremely broad and diverse. The conservation-restoration of cultural heritage in Mexico is an activity of great importance, which has required specialization in diverse efforts from the relevant fields. In this context, the Universal Exhibition can be a good example to discuss the current issues addressed here in this article. The purpose of the exhibition which is held every five years is to promote economic, touristic, and cultural significance of each participating country. Additionally, the exhibition includes multiple forums to discuss such as iconic objects of the pre-Hispanic cultures, vice regal period, and modern and contemporary art. This type of exhibition requires preventive conservation strategies to control environmental conditions around collections and to minimize any possible alteration during their exhibition period. It provides a great opportunity to share and compare experiences with professionals in this field regarding scientific and technical advances. Thus, the Universal Exhibition in Shanghai 2010 was mainly discussed in this article with regard to implementing preventive conservation strategies in detail.

Quality parameters of chicken breast meat affected by carcass scalding conditions

        Rosana Aparecida da Silva-Buzanello,Alexia Francielli Schuch,Andre Wilhan Gasparin,Alex Sanches Torquato,Fernando Reinoldo Scremin,Cristiane Canan,Adriana Lourenco Soares 아세아·태평양축산학회 2019 Animal Bioscience Vol.32 No.8

Objective: The influence of broiler carcass scalding conditions on chicken breast meat quality parameters was investigated. Methods: Two hundred and seventy Cobb broiler chickens from 42 to 48 days old were slaughtered according to the standard industry practice and scalded in five temperature/time combinations—T1, 54°C/210 s; T2, 55°C/180 s; T3, 56°C/150 s; T4, 57°C/120 s; T5, 58°C/90 s. Results: Scalding temperature increase resulted in higher values of external and ventral lightness and in protein functionality reduction—determined by emulsification capacity and protein denaturation—in chicken breast fillets 24 h post-mortem. Protein secondary structures had conformational changes, with a decrease of the α-helix and an increase of the β-sheet and β-turn proportions, mainly in T1 and T5 samples, determined by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy in an attenuated reflectance mode analysis. The chemical composition, pH, water holding capacity and Warner-Bratzler shear force did not differ among the treatments. In the fatty acid profile, the 18:1n-9 was lower in T5, which suggested that the high scalding-temperature could have caused the lipid oxidation. The values of the polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), such as 22:2, 20:4n-6, and 22:6n-3, were highest in the T5, thus being related to the phospholipid cellular membrane collapse in this experimental condition and subsequent release of these PUFA. Conclusion: Intermediate scalding-parameters avoided the negative changes in the chicken meat quality.

Preliminary Studies on the Antinociceptive Activity of Vaccinium ashei Berry in Experimental Animal Models

        Maria Rosana Ramirez,Leandra Guterres,Odila E. Dickel,Micheli R. de Castro,Amelia T. Henriques,Ma´rcia M. de Souza,Daniela Martı´ Barros 한국식품영양과학회 2010 Journal of medicinal food Vol.13 No.2

The aim of this study was to carry out pharmacological screening in order to evaluate the potential effects of lyophilized fruits of different cultivars of Vaccinium ashei Reade (Family Ericaceae) berries, commonly known as rabbiteye blueberries, on nociception. This was achieved using the formalin, hot plate, tail-flick, and writhing tests in mice. During this experiment the mice consumed approximately 3.2–6.4mg/kg/day (p.o.) of the anthocyanins. The extract was administered for 21 days or 60 minutes before test. Morphine and diclofenac (10mg/kg, p.o.) as the standard drug (positive control) and water (via oral gavage) as the negative control were administered before all tests. The blueberry extract produced a significant decrease in constrictions induced by acetic acid and caused graded inhibition of the second phase of formalin-induced pain. Moreover, in both the hot plate and tail-flick tests, it significantly increased the threshold. These data suggest that the extract from V. ashei produced antinociceptive effects, as demonstrated in the experimental models of nociception in mice. Additional experiments are necessary in order to clarify the true target for the antinociceptive effects of rabbiteye blueberry extract.

Identification of dietary patterns in urban population of Argentina: study on diet-obesity relation in population-based prevalence study

Laura Rosana Aballay,Sonia Alejandra Pou,María del Pilar Díaz,Ana Gabriela De La Quintana,Carla Antonella Forte 한국영양학회 2016 Nutrition Research and Practice Vol.10 No.6

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: In Argentina, obesity prevalence rose from 14.6% in 2005 to 20.8% in 2013. Although the number of studies on noncommunicable diseases and dietary patterns as a unique dietary exposure measure has increased, information on this topic remains scarce in developing countries. This is the first population-based study investigating the association between diet and obesity using a dietary pattern approach in Argentina. We aimed (a) to identify current dietary patterns of the population of Córdoba city, (b) to investigate its association with obesity prevalence, and (c) to identify and describe dietary patterns from the subgroup of people with obesity. SUBJECTS/METHODS: The Córdoba Obesity and Diet Study (CODIES) was conducted in Córdoba city by using a random sample of n = 4,327 subjects between 2005 and 2012. Empirically derived dietary patterns were identified through principal component factor analysis. A multiple logistic regression analysis was used to investigate the association of dietary patterns with obesity. RESULTS: Four dietary patterns were identified, called “Starchy-Sugar”, “Prudent”, “Western”, and “Sugary drinks”. High scores for the “Western” pattern (with strongest factor loading on meats/eggs, processed meats, and alcohol) showed a positive association with obesity (OR: 1.33, 95% CI: 1.06-1.67, for third versus first tertile of factor score). “Meats/Cheeses” and “Snacks/Alcohol” patterns emerged in people with obesity. CONCLUSIONS: The findings suggest that high adherence to the “Western” pattern promoted obesity in this urban population. In addition, people with obesity showed characteristic dietary patterns that differ from those identified in the overall population.

Sustainability indicators in the context of family farming: A systematic and bibliometric approach

        Janaina Wohlenberg,Rosana C. S. Schneider,Michele Hoeltz 대한환경공학회 2022 Environmental Engineering Research Vol.27 No.1

Actions that promote the sustainability of small-scale agricultural activities are fundamental to maintaining the supply and diversification of products, generating income, and minimizing their environmental impact. This study aimed to identify the main economic, environmental, and social indicators used in studies focused on food production by family farming. A systematic literature review was performed in the Scopus database, where 22 original articles were identified. The largest number of publications was observed in Italy and the United States of America, followed by Brazil, India, Poland, and the United Kingdom. The main aspect observed in the publications was the interrelationship of the three spheres of sustainability, highlighting the importance of integrated monitoring. Some indicators identified were: in the economic sphere, financial planning, productivity, and profitability; in the environmental sphere, soil use and quality, water, erosion, temperature, and energy; and in the social sphere, food security, job and income generation, and government subsidies. A holistic approach to the use of monitoring indicators as a tool for sustainability is fundamental, but there are few studies that evaluate these three spheres; mainly in the field of agribusiness, due to its greater diversity of activities and aspects to be monitored.

      • The Burden of Cancer in Member Countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN)

Kimman, Merel,Norman, Rosana,Jan, Stephen,Kingston, David,Woodward, Mark Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2012 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.13 No.2

This paper presents the most recent data on cancer rates and the burden of cancer in the ASEAN region. Epidemiological data were sourced from GLOBOCAN 2008 and disability adjusted life years (DALYs) lost were estimated using the standard methodology developed within the World Health Organization's Global Burden of Disease study. Overall, it was estimated there were over 700,000 new cases of cancer and 500,000 cancer deaths in ASEAN in the year 2008, leading to approximately 7.5 million DALYs lost in one year. The most commonly diagnosed cancers were lung (98,143), breast (86,842) and liver cancers (74,777). The most common causes of cancer death were lung cancer (85,772), liver cancer (69,115) and colorectal cancer (44,280). The burden of cancer in terms of DALYs lost was highest in Laos, Viet Nam and Myanmar and lowest in Brunei, Singapore and the Philippines. Significant differences in the patterns of cancer from country to country were observed. Another key finding was the major impact played by population age distribution on cancer incidence and mortality. Cancer rates in ASEAN are expected to increase with ageing of populations and changes in lifestyles associated with economic development. Therefore, ASEAN member countries are strongly encouraged to put in place cancer-control health care policies, focussed on strengthening the health systems to cope with projected increases in cancer prevention, treatment and management needs.

      • An Interactive Platform Supporting Peer-to-Peer Live Video Streaming for Synchronous Distance Education

        Mary Jesany B. Anub,Rosana J. Ferolin 대한전자공학회 2010 ICEIC:International Conference on Electronics, Inf Vol.1 No.1

Video streaming is one of the most successful technologies for sharing of digital information. Highly recognized by many institutions and individuals as a good communication tool and means of sharing information across regions, it is an alternative solution to address the shortcomings of education brought about by the limited time schedule of instructors and the distance aspect between the instructor and the students. In this study, a webbased interactive platform was developed. The aim of the platform is to provide a simple environment which enables the instructor and the students from different locations to interact and share multimedia resources such as live video and audio discussions. The features of the Video Lan Client (VLC) application to utilize itself as a streaming server was used in this study. This allows access to an active stream of a variety of video file types over a network. A routing strategy was developed in such a way that every streaming-capable member can re-transmit the captured streams over one or multiple participants. With this stream and re-streaming approach, client-server bottleneck was avoided and the network load per participant in comparison to a client-server architecture with unicast communications was reduced.

APPROXIMATION OF FIXED POINTS AND THE SOLUTION OF A NONLINEAR INTEGRAL EQUATION

        Faeem Ali,Javid Ali,Rosana Rodr´ıguez-L´opez 경남대학교 기초과학연구소 2021 Nonlinear Functional Analysis and Applications Vol.26 No.5

In this article, we define Picard’s three-step iteration process for the approximation of fixed points of Zamfirescu operators in an arbitrary Banach space. We prove a convergence result for Zamfirescu operator using the proposed iteration process. Further, we prove that Picard’s three-step iteration process is almost T-stable and converges faster than all the known and leading iteration processes. To support our results, we furnish an illustrative numerical example. Finally, we apply the proposed iteration process to approximate the solution of a mixed Volterra-Fredholm functional nonlinear integral equation.
