      • Siphonochilus aethiopicus, a traditional remedy for the treatment of allergic asthma

        Gerda Fouche,Schalk van Rooyen,Teresa Faleschini 셀메드 세포교정의약학회 2013 TANG Vol.3 No.1

Asthma is a chronic inflammatory disease of the lungs, characterized by increased sensitivity to bronchoconstriction associated with infiltration of immune cells and mucus hyper secretion. In South Africa, the indigenous plant Siphonochilus aethiopicus, is used by traditional health practitioners to treat colds and flu, wheezing of the chest, coughs, influenza, sinus problems and mild asthma. In this study we aimed to investigate the potential anti-inflammatory and immune-modulating properties of S. aethiopicus in vitro. The dried and powdered S. aethiopicus plant material was extracted with organic solvents. The dried extracts were screened in vitro in the transcription response, NF-B and a cytokine assay. Significant activity was observed for organic extracts of the plant in these assays. This study provides evidence that S. aethiopicus has anti-inflammatory and immune-suppressing properties in vitro. These findings may support anecdotal accounts of its effectiveness against allergic asthma.

Review : NASH is an Infl ammatory Disorder: Pathogenic, Prognostic and Therapeutic Implications

( Geoffrey C. Farrell ),( Derrick Van Rooyen ),( Lay Gan ),( Shivrakumar Chitturi ) The Editorial Office of Gut and Liver 2012 Gut and Liver Vol.6 No.2

While non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is highly prevalent (15% to 45%) in modern societies, only 10% to 25% of cases develop hepatic fibrosis leading to cirrhosis, end-stage liver disease or hepatocellular carcinoma. Apart from pre-existing fibrosis, the strongest predictor of fibrotic progression in NAFLD is steatohepatitis or non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH). The critical features other than steatosis are hepatocellular degeneration (ballooning, Mallory hyaline) and mixed infl ammatory cell infi ltration. While much is understood about the relationship of steatosis to metabolic factors (over-nutrition, insulin resistance, hyperglycemia, metabolic syndrome, hypoadiponectinemia), less is known about infl ammatory recruitment, despite its importance for the perpetuation of liver injury and fi brogenesis. In this review, we present evidence that liver infl ammation has prognostic signifi cance in NAFLD. We then consider the origins and components of liver infl ammation in NASH. Hepatocytes injured by toxic lipid molecules (lipotoxicity) play a central role in the recruitment of innate immunity involving Toll-like receptors (TLRs), Kupffer cells (KCs), lymphocytes and neutrophils and possibly infl ammasome. The key pro-infl ammatory signaling pathways in NASH are nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB) and c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK). The downstream effectors include adhesion molecules, chemokines, cytokines and the activation of cell death pathways leading to apoptosis. The upstream activators of NF-κB and JNK are more contentious and may depend on the experimental model used. TLRs are strong contenders. It remains possible that infl ammation in NASH originates outside the liver and in the gut microbiota that prime KC/TLR responses, infl amed adipose tissue and circulating infl ammatory cells. We briefl y review these mechanistic considerations and project their implications for the effective treatment of NASH. (Gut Liver 2012;6:149-171)

Capture of Volatile Organic Iodine Species Using Mordenites

        Tejaswini Vaidya,John P. Stanford,Nicolene van Rooyen,Krishnan Raja,Vivek Utgikar,Piyush Sabharwall 한국방사성폐기물학회 2023 방사성폐기물학회지 Vol.21 No.2

The emission of off-gas streams from used fuel recycling is a concern in nuclear energy usage as they contain radioactive compounds, such as, 3H, 14C, 85Kr, 131I, and 129I that can be harmful to human health and environment. Radioactive iodine, 129I, is particularly troublesome as it has a half-life of more than 15 million years and is prone to accumulate in human thyroid glands. Organic iodides are hazardous even at very low concentrations, and hence the capture of 129I is extremely important. Dynamic adsorption experiments were conducted to determine the efficiency of sodium mordenite, partially exchanged silver mordenite, and fully exchanged silver mordenite for the removal of methyl iodide present at parts per billion concentrations in a simulated off-gas stream. Kinetic analysis of the system was conducted incorporating the effects of diffusion and mass transfer. The possible reaction mechanism is postulated and the order of the reaction and the values of the rate constants were determined from the experimental data. Adsorbent characterization is performed to investigate the nature of the adsorbent before and after iodine loading. This paper will offer a comprehensive understanding of the methyl iodide behavior when in contact with the mordenites.

Machine-to-Machine (M2M) Communications in Vehicular Networks

        ( M. J. Booysen ),( J. S. Gilmore ),( S. Zeadally ),( G. J. Van Rooyen ) 한국인터넷정보학회 2012 KSII Transactions on Internet and Information Syst Vol.6 No.2

To address the need for autonomous control of remote and distributed mobile systems, Machine-to-Machine (M2M) communications are rapidly gaining attention from both academia and industry. M2M communications have recently been deployed in smart grid, home networking, health care, and vehicular networking environments. This paper focuses on M2M communications in the vehicular networking context and investigates areas where M2M principles can improve vehicular networking. Since connected vehicles are essentially a network of machines that are communicating, preferably autonomously, vehicular networks can benefit a lot from M2M communications support. The M2M paradigm enhances vehicular networking by supporting large-scale deployment of devices, cross-platform networking, autonomous monitoring and control, visualization of the system and measurements, and security. We also present some of the challenges that still need to be addressed to fully enable M2M support in the vehicular networking environment. Of these, component standardization and data security management are considered to be the most significant challenges.
