The Epoxy-metal Interphase and Its Incidence on Practical Adhesion

Epoxy-amine liquid prepolymers are extensively applied onto metallic substrates and cured to obtain painted materials or bonded joint structures. Overall performances of such systems depend on the created interphase between the organic layer and the substrate. When epoxy-amine liquid mixtures are applied onto more or less hydrated metallic oxide layer, concomitant amine chemical sorption and hydroxide dissolution appear lending to the chelate formation. As soon as the chelate concentration is higher than the solubility product, these species crystallize as sharp needles. Moreover, intrinsic and thermal residual stresses are developed within painted or bonded systems. When residual stresses are higher than the organic layer/substrate adhesion, buckling, blistering, debonding may occur leading to a catastrophic drop of system performances. Practical adhesion can be evaluated with either ultimate parameters (Fmax or Dmax) or the critical strain energy release rate, using the three point flexure test (ISO 14679-1997). We observe that, for the same system, the ultimate load decreases while residual stresses increase when the liquid/solid time increases. Ultimate loads and residual stresses depend on the metallic surface treatment. For these systems, the critical strain energy release rate which takes into account the residual stress profile and the Young's modulus gradient remains quite constant whatever the metallic surface treatment was. These variations will be discussed and correlate to the formation mechanisms of the interphase.

Family Matters: The Making and Remaking of Family during Conflict Periods in Central Asia

The family as a social institution has survived most diverse political periods and appears resilient or at least able to reconstitute itself even in the aftermath of destructive events such as wars. Age at first marriage is one possibility to systematize the strategies that families follow in times of internal conflicts (e.g., civil wars), external interventions or peaceful times. The authors found that age at first marriage correlates with socio-political events whereas perceptions of insecurity lead to a decline in marital age. This paper is based on three case studies that the authors have conducted through ethnographic methods among Tajiks in the cities Kulob, Khujand, and Mazar-e Sharif in Tajikistan and Afghanistan. Combining Grounded Theory with the genealogical methods from social anthropology in order to generate demographic data, the authors introduce the method of grounded demography as a way to generate demographic data through ethnographic methods. Grounded demography offers a way to produce statistical data grounded in ethnographic research.

Men, Work, and Mental Health: A Systematic Review of Depression in Male-dominated Industries and Occupations

Among men, depression is often unrecognised and untreated. Men employed in male-dominated industries and occupations may be particularly vulnerable. However, efforts to develop tailored workplace interventions are hampered by lack of prevalence data. A systematic review of studies reporting prevalence rates for depression in male dominated workforce groups was undertaken. Studies were included if they were published between 1990 - June 2012 in English, examined adult workers in male-dominated industries or occupations (> 70% male workforce), and used clinically relevant indicators of depression. Twenty studies met these criteria. Prevalence of depression ranged from 0.0% to 28.0%. Five studies reported significantly lower prevalence rates for mental disorders among male-dominated workforce groups than comparison populations, while six reported significantly higher rates. Eight studies additionally found significantly higher levels of depression in male-dominated groups than comparable national data. Overall, the majority of studies found higher levels of depression among workers in male-dominated workforce groups. There is a need to address the mental health of workers in male-dominated groups. The workplace provides an important but often overlooked setting to develop tailored strategies for vulnerable groups.

ACCESSIBLE PRE-DESIGN CALCULATION TOOL TO SUPPORT THE DEFINITION OF EV COMPONENTS

The new freedoms in design that electric powertrains offer lead to a wide variety of configurations to consider when developing an electric vehicle (EV) from scratch. Furthermore, the strong relation of the battery size with vehicle weight, range and performances leads to a set of interrelated dependencies that can result in many design loops to fulfil the vehicle targets, market constraints and regulations simultaneously. The paper presents a pre-design tool to assist the electric vehicle development process by representing the different constraints and the possible feasible solutions in a single plot with the need of a small amount of inputs accesible to assess at pre-design phase. As a result, the tool depicts a set of feasible vehicle configurations that could fulfil the targets easing the interaction and loops among different expertise areas. To better assist selection, it also provides a sensitivity analysis of the performances to selected inputs and the user can introduce a cost function depending on vehicle weight and battery size. The tool is based on the vehicle longitudinal dynamics equations and equations that model the market and regulations constraints. It is aimed at providing an overview of the main specifications for component selection avoiding detailed vehicle modelling in the early pre-design phase at which the vehicle characteristics and even powertrain architecture are unknown. Finally, the tool results quality is evaluated by further developing one of its solutions for passenger car in four different vehicle configurations with the simulation software vemSim and AVL Cruise. The results of the simulations are compared to the solution of the pre-design tool to evaluate the level of fidelity and the deviations in the final result that can appear depending on the final architecture, components characteristics and control strategy.

Yeats, Beckett and Friel : Tradition or Counter-Tradition?

Yeats argued that the mainstream tradition of Irish theatre was realist, and that his drama was the opposite; subjective rather than objective, anti-naturalistic and symbolic. This article traces the profound influence of Yeats's drama on the two greatest Irish playwrights to have emerged since his death: Samuel Beckett and Brian Friel. Beckett was present at the production of Yeats's last staged play, Purgatory, at Dublin's Abbey Theatre in 1938. Its impact is evident in the minimalist staging, stylisation and dramaturgy of Beckett's two great plays in the 1950s: Waiting for Godot and Endgame. Brian Friel quotes Yeats's poetry extensively in his 1966 play, The Loves of Cass McGuire but it is the impression of his dramaturgy that is stronger, in this play and throughout Friel's lengthy career. Particular attention is paid to the presence of live people on stage who turn out to be dead, one of the main ways Friel draws on Yeats to avoid 'the tawdry device of realism'. The article concludes that what was once the counter-tradition of Yeats is now the tradition of Irish theatre.

Assessing the Parasitic Burden in a Late Antique Florentine Emergency Burial Site

Excavation (2008-2014) carried out under the Uffizi Gallery (Florence, Italy) led to the discovery of 75 individuals, mostly buried in multiple graves. Based on Roman minted coins, the graves were preliminarily dated between the second half of the 4th and the beginning of the 5th centuries CE. Taphonomy showed that this was an emergency burial site associated with a catastrophic event, possibly an epidemic of unknown etiology with high mortality rates. In this perspective, paleoparasitological investigations were performed on 18 individuals exhumed from 9 multiple graves to assess the burden of gastrointestinal parasitism. Five out of eighteen individuals (27.7%) tested positive for ascarid-type remains; these are considered as “decorticated” Ascaris eggs, which have lost their outer mammillated coat. Roundworms (genus Ascaris) commonly infest human populations under dire sanitary conditions. Archaeological and historical evidence indicates that Florentia suffered a period of economic crisis between the end of 4th and the beginning of the 5th centuries CE, and that the aqueduct was severely damaged at the beginning of the 4th century CE, possibly during the siege of the Goths (406 CE). It is more than plausible that the epidemic, possibly coupled with the disruption of the aqueduct, deeply affected the living conditions of these individuals. A 27.7% frequency suggests that ascariasis was widespread in this population. This investigation exemplifies how paleoparasitological information can be retrieved from the analysis of sediments sampled in cemeteries, thus allowing a better assessment of the varying frequency of parasitic infections among ancient populations.

The Importance of Real-life Research in Respiratory Medicine
