Evaluation of Liquid Pressure Amplifier Technology
Reindl Douglas T.,Hong Hiki The Society of Air-Conditioning and Refrigerating 2005 International Journal Of Air-Conditioning and Refr Vol.13 No.3
Liquid pressure amplifiers have been proposed as an energy saving technology for vapor compression refrigeration systems configured with direct-expansion evaporators. The technology utilizes a refrigerant pump in the high pressure liquid line as a means of maintaining a suitable pressure differential across the expansion valve while lowering condensing pressure to achieve the reduction of compressor energy consumption. Applications have been proposed on systems ranging from small unitary air-conditioning to large supermarket and commercial refrigeration systems. This paper clarifies the role of such a device in a vapor compression refrigeration system. Limitations are presented and discussed. Finally, results of detailed analyses are presented to quantify the energy consumption both with and without a liquid pressure amplifier in a unitary air conditioning system. The estimated energy savings associated with the installation of a liquid pressure amplifier are minimal.
Experimental verification of a solar hot water heating system with a spiral-jacketed storage tank

Simplifying solar thermal systems offers a number of potential benefits, including lower initial investment, lower maintenance costs, and reduced likelihood of operating faults. Reduced capital cost leads to increased competitiveness in the energy market. With appropriate care, a simplified solar thermal system design can maintain competitive energy performance with more complicated designs. We propose to simplify small-scale thermal storage systems by the use of a spiral-jacketed storage tank that combines the function of both the heat exchanger and storage tank. The new storage tank is designed and manufactured to maintain performance comparable to a conventional system, and its functional performance validated by retrofitting an existing system and operating it under real conditions over a multiple month period. The system retrofitted with a spiral-jacketed storage tank showed performance competitive with the previous system that utilized a typical storage tank and heat exchanger during a day with a good solar radiation but experienced somewhat diminished performance during a month that included cloudy days.

The effect of manifold in liquid storage tank applied to solar combisystem
손효석,김철,Douglas Reindl,홍희기 대한기계학회 2015 JOURNAL OF MECHANICAL SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY Vol.29 No.3
There exists a return piping in solar combi-system for heating and hot water supply. When the temperature of water returning from theload is mixed with the lower side cold water of the storage tank, useful energy is reduced. This paper describes a diffuser and manifoldfor preventing this mixing and maintaining temperature stratification. Results from experiments show that manifold holes are optimum at8.5 mm in diameter with a total of 96 in number of holes at a flow rate of 0.3 lpm.
FREEZE PROTECTION METHOD USING HOT WATER FOR PASSIVE SOLAR WATER HEATING SYSTEM
홍희기,김종현,정재동,HIROYUKI KUMANO,Douglas Reindl 대한설비공학회 2012 International Journal Of Air-Conditioning and Refr Vol.20 No.4
In the present work, a new freeze protection method is introduced with intended applications for passive solar water heaters. Though electro-thermal wire heat tracing is popularly used to prevent freezing with subsequent risk of burst, this approach is problematic due to resistance heater failure and excessive electric power consumption. In the experimental device, hot water in thermal storage tank is used to heat the outlet pipe from the tank when the surface temperature of the pipe falls lower than a pre-determined set point. The cold water pipe to the thermal storage tank is installed in direct contact with the hot water pipe, controlling its temperature by conduction with the hot water pipe.

Piperlongumine (PL), an alkaloid obtained from long peppers, displays antitumorigenic properties for a variety of human cell- and animal-based models. The aim of this study was to identify the underlying molecular mechanisms for PL anticancer effects on human pancreatic cancer cells. RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) was used to identify the effects of PL on the transcriptome of MIA PaCa-2 human pancreatic cancer cells. PL treatment of pancreatic cancer cells resulted in differential expression of 683 mRNA transcripts with known protein functions, 351 of which were upregulated and 332 of which were downregulated compared to control-treated cells. Transcripts associated with oxidative stress, endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress, and unfolded protein response pathways were significantly overexpressed with PL treatment. Reverse transcription-quantitative polymerase chain reaction and western blotting were used to validate the RNA-seq results, which included upregulation of HO-1, IRE1α, cytochrome c, and ASNS. The results provide key insight into the mechanisms by which PL alters cancer cell physiology and identify that activation of oxidative stress and ER stress pathways is a critical avenue for PL anticancer effects.
