Extraction and concentration of cobalt from acidic leach solutions containing Co–Ni by emulsion liquid membrane using TOA as extractant

Recep Ali Kumbasar 한국공업화학회 2010 Journal of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Vol.16 No.3

The present investigation deals with carrier-facilitated membrane transport of cobalt from acidic leach solutions containing cobalt and nickel by emulsion liquid membrane (ELM). In this work, the zinc plant electrolyte purification was leached with hydrochloric acid and main acidic leach solution containing Zn(II), Cu(II), Fe(II), Cd(II), Co(II) and Ni(II) ions was obtained. After Zn(II), Cu(II), Fe(II) and Cd(II) ions in the acidic leach solution were separated, the important parameters influencing the extent of cobalt extraction were investigated and optimumconditions were determined. Cobalt transport was influenced by number of parameters like cobalt initial concentration, mixing speed, extractant concentration, surfactant concentration, the stripping solution type and concentration, and the feed solution acid concentration. After the optimum parameter values were determined, cobalt from the acidic leach solution containing 100 mg Co/L and 200 mg Ni/L was almost completely extracted within 10 min. The results showed that it is possible to extract 99% of cobalt by using ELM from the acidic leach solutions containing Zn(II), Cu(II), Fe(II), Cd(II), Co(II) and Ni(II) ions at the optimum operating conditions. 2010 The Korean Society of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry. Recep Ali Kumbasar 한국공업화학회 2010 Journal of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Vol.16 No.2

In present study, selective extraction of cadmium from acidic leach solutions, containing various heavy metal ions, by emulsion liquid membrane (ELM) is studied. For this reason, the zinc plant copper cake was leached with sulfuric acid and main acidic leach solution containing Zn(II), Cu(II), Fe(II), Cd(II), Co(II) and Ni(II) ions was obtained. After Zn(II), Cu(II), Fe(II) and Cd(II) ions in the acidic leach solution were separated, the important parameters influencing the extent of cadmium extraction were investigated and optimum conditions were determined. Cadmium extraction was influenced by number of parameters like initial metal ion concentration, mixing speed, phase ratio, extractant concentration, surfactant concentration, the stripping solution type and concentration, and the feed solution acid concentration. The optimumvalues of parameter abovementioned were used and cadmium in the acidic leach solution containing 650 mg Cd/L, 365 mg Co/L, 535 mg Ni/L, and 1260 mg Zn/L was almost completely extracted within 10 min. The results showed that it is possible to extract 99% of cadmium after 10 min contact time by using ELM from aqueous solutions, containing Fe(II), Al(III), Cu(II), Zn(II), Pb(II), Co(II) and Ni(II) ions, at the optimum operating conditions.

Prediction assessment and validation of multiscale models for additively manufactured lattice structures under uncertainty

        Recep M. Gorguluarslan,Ramana V. Grandhi,최해진,최승겸 대한기계학회 2019 JOURNAL OF MECHANICAL SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY Vol.33 No.3

In the design of lattice structures fabricated by additive manufacturing, a multiscale modeling process is usually required to effectively account for fine scale uncertainties. The validation of the multiscale model predictions, on the other hand, is a challenging task. In this research, two prediction assessment approaches, namely the area validation metric and the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test, are presented in a systematic validation pyramid approach with u-pooling method to address this issue. The use of these two approaches are evaluated in terms of being an unbiased decision criterion for the prediction assessment and validation of the multiscale models. The fine scale material and geometry uncertainties are propagated onto homogenized properties using a stochastic upscaling method at each scale of interest. The homogenized model predictions are validated using the experimental data obtained for the lattice structure example fabricated by material extrusion process. The results indicate that the presented approach is capable of effectively validate the predictions of the multiscale models under uncertainty.

Exposure of Surgical Staff to Radiation During Surgical Probe Applications in Breast Cancer

        Recep Bekis,Pinar Celik,Banu Uysal,Mehmet Ali Kocdor,Ali Sevinc,Serdar Saydam,Omer Harmancioglu 한국유방암학회 2009 Journal of breast cancer Vol.12 No.1

Purpose: The aim of study was to determine the level of the radiation exposure of surgical staff during surgical probe applications in breast cancer. Methods: Three operations of a sentinel lymph node biopsy were randomly selected. Spaced circles (50 cm apart) were drawn surrounding the operation bed on the floor. Tc-99m nanocolloid was injected peritumorally and intradermally into a patient. The radiation dose was measured with a GeigerMueller counter placed according to the drawn circles at distances of 50-200 cm from the side of patient's head and bilateral chest while the patient lay on the operation bed. All of the surgical procedures were recorded with a video camera and were monitored. Results: The whole body dose to the senior surgeon was calculated as 2.00-4.70 µSv which means that a senior surgeon can perform 212-500 procedures per year to reach the annual International Commission on Radiological Protection radiation dose limit for a member of the public. Conclusion: We concluded that radiation risk to the surgical staff is low from sentinel node detection with the use of radiocolloids.

The Effect of the Addition of Encapsulated Collagen Hydrolysate on Some Quality Characteristics of Sucuk

        Recep Palamutoğlu,Cemalettin Sariçoban 한국축산식품학회 2016 한국축산식품학회지 Vol.36 No.6

The effect of addition commercial fish collagen hydrolysate and encapsulated fish collagen hydrolysate on the quality characteristics of sucuk (a traditional Turkish dry-fermented sausage) was investigated. Fish collagen hydrolysates were encapsulated with maltodextrin (MD) which has two different dextrose equivalent (12DE and 19 DE), with two different types of core/coating material ratios (10% peptide : 90% MD, 20% peptide : 80% MD). Than six group of sucuk dough (control, peptide, MD1210, MD1220, MD1910, MD1920) prepared and naturally fermented. The effects of the ripening period (28 d), treatment (peptide and encapsulated peptide addition) ‘ripening period × treatment’ interaction on sucuk’s pH, lactic acid contents, aw values and moisture contents were statistically significant (p<0.01). The pH, moisture and aw decrease and lactic acid concentration increses during ripening period. The highest pH was observed with peptide added group (5.41), and encapsulated peptide added groups (4.76-4.77) were lower than the control group (5.26). Lactic acid concentration was affected from treatment and all treatment groups lactic acid concentration (0.185-0.190%) were higher than the control group (0.164%). Antioxidant and Angiotensin converting enzyme inhibition activities of water soluble protein extracts were significantly (p<0.01) increased during ripening time. Antioxidant activity reached the highest level at 28th d. There was no significant increase observed after fermentation for both activities. Antioxidant activity of encapsulated peptide added (%39.56-40.48) groups were higher than control (34.28%) and peptide added (33.99%) groups except MD1920 (38.30%). The effect of the ripening period of the sucuk samples on TBA values was found to be statistically significant (p<0.01) while treatment and ‘ripening period × treatment’ interaction were not to be significant (p<0.05). The value of hardness was the highest in the encapsulated peptide added groups (29.27, 35.83 N), and it was 20.40 N and 15.41 N in the peptide added group and the control group respectively.

Genome-wide Analysis of Iron-Regulated Transporter 1 (IRT1) Genes in Plants

Recep Vatansever,Ertugrul Filiz,Ibrahim Ilker Ozyigit 한국원예학회 2015 Horticulture, Environment, and Biotechnology Vol.56 No.4

Iron (Fe) is an essential micronutrient required in a number of biological processes in plant species. Fe transporters are a type of broad-range metal transporter and have different families functioning in different compartments. This study focused on iron-regulated transporter 1 (IRT1), which are mainly responsible for Fe uptake from root, in 17 selected plant species with an emphasis on Brachypodium distachyon, Chlamydomonas reinhardtii, Solanum lycopersicum and Populus trichocarpa species. All IRT1 proteins were observed to belong to the ZIP (PF02535) protein family with eight transmembrane (TM) domains, and have a similar molecular weight (33.86-42.72 kDa, except for C. reinhardtii with 65.83 kDa) and amino acid length (324-408 aa, except for C. reinhardtii with 639 aa), with pI values of 5.31-7.16. The sub-cellular localization of these proteins was predicted to be the plasma membrane. Similar exon numbers were also detected with most genes having 2-3, except for C. reinhardtii (5), Physcomitrella patens (5) and Vitis vinifera (4). In a phylogenetic tree, monocot-dicot separation was not observed in main groups but some subgroups included only monocot or dicot proteins. Predicted interaction partner analysis of AtIRT1 (AT2G30080.1) pointed to main interaction partners either directly related with iron transport or that of other metal ion. The results of this study provide a theoretical reference for elucidating the structural and biological role of IRT1 genes/proteins in plant species.

Selective extraction and concentration of chromium(VI) from acidic solutions containing various metal ions through emulsion liquid membranes using Amberlite LA-2

Recep Ali Kumbasar 한국공업화학회 2010 Journal of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Vol.16 No.5

Chromium(VI) is a very harmful metal, highly toxic and carcinogenic in nature. Its separation from industrial effluents is of primordial importance. An extensive study on selective extraction and concentration of chromium(VI) from the acidic solutions containing various metal ions using an emulsion liquid membrane (ELM) technique is presented. The ELM consists of Amberlite LA-2 as an extractant, commercial kerosene as organic solvent, ECA 4360J as a surfactant and 0.5 M ammonium carbonate solution as stripping phase. The study has highlighted the importance and influence of membrane composition for maximizing the extraction of chromium(VI). For this reason, effects of various parameters such as chromium(VI) concentration in the acidic solution, mixing speed, type and concentration of stripping solution, type and acid concentration of the acidic solution, extractant and surfactant concentrations, phase ratio and treatment ratio were studied and optimum conditions were determined. The results showed that it is possible to extract 99% of chromium(VI) from the acidic solution containing Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II), Zn(II), and Cd(II) ions, at the optimum conditions. 2010 The Korean Society of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry. Selective transport of cobalt (II) from ammoniacal solutions containing cobalt (II) and nickel (II) by emulsion liquid membranes using 8-hydroxyquinoline

Recep Ali Kumbasar 한국공업화학회 2012 Journal of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Vol.18 No.1

The selective transport of cobalt (II) from ammoniacal solutions containing nickel (II) and cobalt (II) by emulsion liquid membranes (ELMs) using 8-hydroxyquinoline (8-HQ) as extractant has been presented. Membrane solution consists of a diluent (kerosene), a surfactant (ECA 4360J), and an extractant (8-HQ). Very dilute sulphuric solution buffered at pH 5.0 has been used as a stripping solution. The ammoniacal feed solution pH was adjusted to 9.0 with hydrochloric acid. The important variables governing the permeation of cobalt (II) have been studied. These variables are membrane composition, pH of the feed solution, cobalt (II) and nickel (II) concentrations of the feed solution, stirring speed, surfactant concentration, extractant concentration, complexing agent concentration and pH of the stripping solution, and phase ratio. After the optimum conditions had been determined, it was possible to selectively transport 95.0% of cobalt (II) from ammoniacal feed solution containing Co2+ and Ni2+ ions. The separation factors of cobalt (II) with respect to nickel (II), based on initial feed concentration, have experimentally found to be of as high as 31 for equimolar Co(II)–Ni(II) feed solution.

Spinal Intradural Hematoma and Permanent Paraparesis after a Lumboperitoneal Shunt Operation: An Unusual Complication

        Recep Basaran,Mustafa Efendioglu,Fatih Han Bolukbasi,Sahin Aslan,Nejat Isik,Tuncay Kaner 대한척추외과학회 2014 Asian Spine Journal Vol.8 No.4

Pseudotumor cerebri is a condition of increased intracranial pressure in the absence of clinical, laboratory or radiological pathology. Spinal intradural hematoma formation after lumboperitoneal shunt (LPS) implantation is very rare, but it can cause sudden and serious deterioration. In this report, we present a patient who developed an intradural hematoma following LPS operation. A 27-year-old male patient suffering from headaches and progressive vision loss was diagnosed with pseudotumor cerebri. He underwent LPS operation in January 2009. Four hours after the operation, he developed urinary and fecal incontinence with paraparesis (1/5). Lumbar magnetic resonance imaging identified an intradural hematoma at the level of L2–L3, and he was reoperated. The intradural hematoma was removed. Physical therapy was started because of paraparesis. Two months later, the patient’s muscle strength had increased to 3/5. Surgeons must remember that, LPS implantation can cause a spinal intradural hematoma in a small percentage of patients, with catastrophic results.
