        THE DEPENDENCE OF MARKET RETURN VOLATILITY ON TRADING VOLUME IN KOREA AND THAILAND

        The objective of this paper is to examine if the heteroskedasticity in stock market return data can be explained by incorporating trading volume as a mixing variable in the conditional variance equation. This study relies on daily returns and volumes of two developing markets in Asia, namely, the Korean Stock Exchange and the Stock Exchange of Thailand over the 9-year tumultuous period of 1990-1998. The results strongly suggest that the GARCH model adequately describes the two index return series in the absence of volume as a mixing variable. However, the introduction of volume does not succeed in eliminating or for that matter significantly reducing the ARCH and GARCH effects.

      • The Local Small Business Community Development and their Perception of Island Tourism in Penang, Malaysia

        This paper presents the perception of local small-business community of Island Tourism in Penang, Malaysia. A study was conducted at Batu Ferringhi Beach, a popular destination in Penang, Malaysia for both local and foreign tourists wanting to experience the sun, sea, sand and water sports along the coast line of Batu Ferringhi. The Naturalistic Method of inquiry was used for qualitative data collection. This method is used to help the researchers understand the host-tourism relationship before conducting further investigation. There are some issues highlighted by the local business community that need to be addressed by the authorities. Investigation conducted at the Batu Ferringhi Beach, Penang revealed that the local business community received very little support from the local tourism development authorities. It is hoped that the findings of this study will contribute to the existing literature in the field of island tourism development that could contribute to the sustainability of the local small business community at the beach area.

      • Biosensor Arrays for Environmental Pollutants Detection

        Sensors are an extremely broad field which impacts on many major industrial sectors. This review paper highlights the research carried out during the last 8 years based on recent advances in the development of enzyme and NA (nucleic acid) based biosensors for environmental detection including pollutants and toxic compounds in a wide range of samples. NAbased biosensors are also finding increasing use for the detection of environmental pollutants and their toxicity. Biosensors are now used in a wide variety of disciplines, so that the different types of biosensors are used with their advantages and limitations with different transducers forming the sensing devices, for the different environmental contaminants analysis. The general applications of the enzyme biosensors are highlighted related with an environmental monitoring application. Recent advances in the development and applications of biosensor arrays for environmental detection are highlighted in this review article with special emphasis on functional nucleic acid elements (aptamers, DNAzymes, aptazymes), widely useful in nanobiotechnology and also in lab-on-a-chip technology.

        Lepidium sativum (Garden cress): a review of contemporary literature and medicinal properties

        The utility of Lepidium sativum Linn (Garden cress) as a medicinal plant has increased many fold over a period of time. A survey of literature relating to the medicinal uses of L.sativum reveals it to be one of the widely used medicinal plants. It finds place in folklore medicine, Ayurveda, Unani and other indigenous systems of medicine. Following a large number of claims on the wide range of traditional medicinal properties of the plant, considerable efforts have been made to verify its efficacy as a curative agent through pharmacological investigations and clinical trials. In this article, a comprehensive account of the traditional uses, phytochemical investigation and therapeutic potential of Lepidium sativum is presented.

        Bauhinia variegata Linn. (Mountain Ebony): a review on ethnobotany, phytochemistry and pharmacology

        Bauhinia variegata Linn (Mountain Ebony) is a medium-sized, deciduous tree, found throughout India, ascending to an altitude of 1,300 m in the Himalayas. The plant is widely used by the tribals throughout India and popular in various indigenous systems of medicine like Ayurveda, Unani and Homoeopathy. Following the various traditional claims on utility of this plant in curing number of diseases, considerable efforts have been made by researchers to verify its utility through pharmacological screenings. The notable biological activities reported are anthelmintic, antiulcer, antitumour, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, antigoitrogenic, hepatoprotective and haemagglutination. Industrially, the plant is widely used for the manufacture of wood wool board, production of tannin, oil, gum and fibre. The plant is also utilized for afforestation to conserve the nature. In this article, a comprehensive account of the cultivation, microscopy, phytochemical investigation, traditional and biologically evaluated medicinal uses of B variegata is presented.         Thermal, Micro-Structural, and Electrical Properties of a La1-xSrx Mn0.85Fe0.05Co0.05Ni0.05O3+δ (x = 0–0.4 Mole) Cathode System

        The oxygen stoichiometry, thermal expansion, morphology, and electrical conductivity of a co-doped perovskitetype cathode system, La1-xSrx Mn0.85Fe0.05Co0.05 Ni0.05O3+ä (x = 0–0.4 mole), are studied for intermediate-temperature solid oxide fuel cell applications. Sr 2+ -doping led to a decrease in the unit cell volume, oxygen stoichiometry, particle size, and activation energy, and an increase in the coefficient of thermal expansion and electrical conductivity. The sample with x = 0.3 mole exhibited four to five fold weight loss with respect to La0.75Sr0.25 MnO3+δ at an intermediate temperature range and suggested the availability of a large number of oxygen vacancies due to a co-doping effect. This sample also showed sufficiently high electrical conductivity (~76 S cm −1 ) at 650 °C, a low activation energy (~0.15 eV), and a coefficient of thermal expansion (~12.1 × 10 −6 °C −1 ) comparable to those of the adjacent components and submicron sized particles. The experimental results are explained using defect models.         A Review on Herbal Antiasthmatics

        In traditional systems of medicine, many plants have been documented to be useful for the treatment of various respiratory disorders including asthma. In the last two decades the use of medicinal plants and natural products has been increased dramatically all over the world. Current synthetic drugs used in pharmacotherapy of asthma are unable to act at all the stages and targets of asthma. However some herbal alternatives employed in asthma are proven to provide symptomatic relief and assist in the inhibition of disease progression also. The herbs have shown interesting results in various target specific biological activities such as bronchodilation, mast cell stabilization,anti-anaphylactic, anti-inflammatory, anti-spasmodic,anti-allergic, immunomodulatory and inhibition of mediators such as leukotrienes, lipoxygenase, cyclooxygenase,platelet activating, phosphodiesterase and cytokine, in the treatment of asthma. This paper is an attempt to classify these pharmacological and clinical findings based on their possible mechanism of action reported. It also signifies the need for development of polyherbal formulations containing various herbs acting at particular sites of the pathophysiological cascade of asthma for prophylaxis as well as for the treatment of asthma.

        Application of non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm for multi-objective optimization of electrical discharge diamond face grinding process

        Hybrid machining processes (HMPs), having potential for machining of difficult to machine materials but the complexity and highmanufacturing cost, always need to optimize the process parameters. Our objective was to optimize the process parameters of electricaldischarge diamond face grinding (EDDFG), considering the simultaneous effect of wheel speed, pulse current, pulse on-time and dutyfactor on material removal rate (MRR) and average surface roughness (Ra). The experiments were performed on a high speed steel(HSS) workpiece at a self developed face grinding setup on an EDM machine. All the experimental results were used to develop themathematical model using response surface methodology (RSM). The developed model was used to generate the initial population for agenetic algorithm (GA) during optimization, non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm (NSGA-II) was used to optimize the process parametersof EDDFG process. Finally, optimal solutions obtained from pareto front are presented and compared with experimental data.

        Evaluation of Somaclonal Variation for Genetic Improvement of Patchouli ($Pogostemon$ $patchouli$), an Exclusively Vegetatively Propagated Aromatic Plant

        Patchouli ($Pogostemon$ $patchouli$) is an important, exclusively vegetatively propagated aromatic plant, whose essential oil is widely used in perfumery and cosmetic products. Forty $SC_1$ generation (first generation following $in$ $vitro$ phase) somaclones selected randomly from about 400 somaclones developed from the variety Johore, were multiplied through stem cuttings and evaluated in $SC_2$ and $SC_3$ generations to study the extent of somaclonal variation generated for plant height, herb yield, essential oil content, essential oil yield, and seven constituents of the essential oil. Significant or highly significant somaclonal variation was observed for plant height, herb yield, essential oil content, essential oil yield, and contents of patchouli alcohol, ${\alpha}$-guaiene, ${\alpha}$,${\delta}$-patchoulene, and ${\alpha}$-bulnesene in the essential oil. The number of somaclones significantly superior to the parental variety for plant height, herb yield, essential oil content, and patchouli alcohol content in the essential oil ranged from 8 - 16 and the maximum superiority over the parental variety for these traits ranged from 21 - 79%. Broad-sense heritability estimates of plant height, herb yield, and essential oil content were 0.60 - 0.70 while those of essential oil yield and patchouli alcohol content were 0.44 and 0.47, respectively. Heritability estimates of other studied essential oil constituents were generally low (0.12 - 0.38). A high positive correlation was observed between essential oil yield and herb yield suggesting that selection for herb yield would be effective in improving essential oil yield. Patchouli alcohol content in the essential oil was negatively correlated with all the studied traits. Somaclonal variation, heritabilities of traits, and inter-trait correlations are reported for the first time in patchouli.

        Effectiveness of piezoelectric fiber reinforced composite laminate in active damping for smart structures

        This paper deals with the effect of ply orientation and control gain on tip transverse displacement of functionally graded beam layer for both active constrained layer damping (ACLD) and passive constrained layer damping (PCLD) system. The functionally graded beam is taken as host beam with a bonded viscoelastic layer in ACLD beam system. Piezoelectric fiber reinforced composite (PFRC) laminate is a constraining layer which acts as actuator through the velocity feedback control system. A finite element model has been developed to study actuation of the smart beam system. Fractional order derivative constitutive model is used for the viscoelastic constitutive equation. The control voltage required for ACLD treatment for various symmetric ply stacking sequences is highest in case of longitudinal orientation of fibers of PFRC laminate over other ply stacking sequences. Performance of symmetric and anti-symmetric ply laminates on damping characteristics has been investigated for smart beam system using time and frequency response plots. Symmetric and anti-symmetric ply laminates significantly reduce the amplitude of the vibration over the longitudinal orientation of fibers of PFRC laminate. The analysis reveals that the PFRC laminate can be used effectively for developing very light weight smart structures.
