[Purpose] Sodium bicarbonate shows ergogenic potential in physical exercise and sports activities, although there is no strong evidence which performance markers show the greatest benefit from this supplement. This study evaluated the effects of sodium bicarbonate supplementation on time trial performance and time to exhaustion in athletes and sports practitioners. [Methods] A systematic review was conducted using three databases, including 17 clinical trials. Among these clinical trials, 11 were considered eligible for the meta-analysis according to the criteria for the assessment of methodological quality using the PEDro Scale. Time to exhaustion was assessed in six studies, while time trial performance was evaluated in five studies. [Results] A significant beneficial effect of supplementation on time to exhaustion was found in a random effects model (1.48; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.49 to 2.48). There was no significant effect of supplementation on time trial performance in a fixed effects model (slope = -0.75; 95% CI, -2.04 to 0.55) relative to a placebo group. [Conclusion] Sodium bicarbonate has the potential to improve sports performance in general, especially in terms of time to exhaustion.

The potential utilization of waste rock obtained from an active nickel mine site in Mindanao, the Philippines for indirect carbon sequestration is explored in this study. X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray fluorescence (XRF), and inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES) results showed that the sample is rich in iron, existing in three different forms: goethite (α-FeOOH), chromite (FeCr2O4), and magnetite (Fe3O4). Leaching tests performed using hydrochloric acid (HCl) showed high iron extraction rates, with a maximum average extraction efficiency of 95.35% obtained at 100°C, 4 M HCl, and 1.0 h. Morphological and physicochemical analyses conducted through scanning electron microscopy and Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) method supported the high extraction rates obtained for Fe, which is due to the higher reactivity of the sample to the leaching agent as well as the higher availability of accessible sites for reaction on the sample surface as compared to other mine wastes that are previously utilized. The nickel laterite waste rock sample has the potential to be used as a feedstock for iron carbonation in indirect carbon sequestration; however, challenges such as the use of sulfide source and cost requirements must be addressed in order to fully determine its viability for industrial scale application.
La Marcha Del Boticario: Philippine Soundscapes in the Late Nineteenth Century
Ramon Guillermo Academy of Mobility Humanities 2022 Mobility Humanities Vol.1 No.1
In 1878, Dr. Heinrich Rothdauscher, a German pharmacist working in Vigan, made a short expedition to the Cordilleras. He published his experiences as a memoir in 1932 (Lebenserinnerungen eines Deutschen Apothekers). Although Rothdauscher, who described himself as having a highly developed musical sense, did not dwell at length upon matters of music, some of his observations are pertinent to understanding the phenomenon of late nineteenth century Western contact with Philippine indigenous and syncretic musical traditions. More importantly, his vivid descriptions of Philippine colonial soundscapes in cities and remote tribal settlements are uniquely intriguing and unusually vivid. His observations are all the more interesting since these were made at the time of the invention of the phonograph in 1877 by the American Thomas Edison. Rothdauscher describes what may be the last moments in which certain types of Philippine music and their corresponding soundscapes were at at the very threshold of the era of the commodification of sound.
Takayasu Arteritis Presenting as Bilateral Ocular Ischemic Syndrome

A 26-year-old female came in with progressive blurring of vision. She had developed memory loss and complained of headache, significant weight loss, and exertional left calf pain after prolonged walking. Pertinent physical findings included light perception on visual acuity examination, and the brachial and radial pulses of both arms were not appreciable. Thoracic and abdominal aortic imaging by computed tomography with contrast revealed narrowing along the thoracic aorta and its branches. Carotid Doppler showed bilaterally thickened walls in the common carotid arteries, with near total occlusion of the left carotid artery. These findings were consistent with bilateral ocular ischemic syndrome in Takayasu arteritis. She was given methylprednisolone 500 mg intravenously daily for 3 days with noted improvement in vision. She was discharged and showed improvement on prednisone 35 mg/day and aspirin 80 mg/day. On follow-up two weeks post-discharge, she reported being able to see silhouettes of persons and objects.
The Bush Administration and North Korea: Explaining Policy Change through Soft Balancing
( Ramon Pacheco Pardo ) 한국국방연구원 2014 The Korean Journal of Defense Analysis Vol.26 No.3
Why did the George W. Bush Administration change its policy toward North Korea from confrontation to accommodation during the second nuclear crisis? This article answers the question by analyzing how and why a coalition-including Bush Administration doves, China, Russia, South Korea and, at times, Japan and North Korea-worked together to overcome the reticence of Bush Administration hawks to engage with Pyongyang. Building on the soft balancing, bureaucratic politics, and transgovernmental coalitions literature, this article explains how the Six-Party Talks served this coalition to understand the extent to which they shared goals and policies. Aware of the divisions within the Bush Administration regarding policy toward North Korea, the five other parties to the talks were able to undermine the preferred policies of U.S. hawks while supporting the policies of doves. Thus, rather than determining Washington’s behavior, this coalition laid the ground for U.S. officials supportive of accommodation to upload their preferences into official Bush Administration’s policy. This article therefore also sheds light on how soft balancing can be used by third parties to influence the decision-making process in the United States.
