Paraneoplastic Limbic Encephalitis in a Male with Squamous Cell Carcinoma of the Lung

        Tamara Sauri,Àngel Izquierdo,LLuis Ramió-Torrentà,Àngel Sanchez-Montañez,Joaquim Bosch-Barrera,Rut Porta 대한신경과학회 2015 Journal of Clinical Neurology Vol.11 No.1

Background Paraneoplastic limbic encephalitis (PLE) is a rare syndrome characterized bymemory impairment, symptoms of hypothalamic dysfunction, and seizures. It commonly precedes the diagnosis of cancer. Small-cell lung cancer is the neoplasm that is most frequently reported as the etiology underlying PLE. Case Report This report describes a male patient who presented with neurologic symptomsconsistent with anterograde amnesia, apathy, and disorientation. MRI revealed diffuse hyperintensities located predominantly in the medial bitemporal lobes, basal ganglia, frontal lobes, andleptomeninges on fluid attenuated inversion recovery images, suggesting PLE. Study of the primary tumor revealed squamous cell carcinoma of the lung. The patient was treated with neoadjuvant chemotherapy followed by surgery and adjuvant chemoradiotherapy, which resulted in hisneurologic symptoms gradually improving. Conclusions PLE might be a rare debut of squamous cell carcinoma of the lung. Treatment ofthe primary tumor may improve the neurologic symptoms.

      • The Changing Role of Teachers in Preparing Future Generations: The Implications of Globalization & Technology on the Education System

        Ramy A. Rahimi(Ramy A. Rahimi ),Kyung-Hye Park(Kyung-Hye Park) 한국캐나다학회 2020 Asia-Pacific Journal of Canadian Studies (APJCS) Vol.26 No.1

The research paper aims to understand how globalization affects all sectors of education and instigates them to transform and change. Also, comprehending how Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) have the power to complement, enrich and positively transform education. This study finds that modern-day education reform and expansion needs to be regarded from the global contexts of decentralization and marketization perspectives. Likewise, the American Education System has been forced to reform rapidly in the past 3 decades, where it has seen many failures. Similarly, the use of ICT for active teaching has presented an efficient model in terms of integrating these technologies into teaching and learning practices. Additionally, teachers work in increasingly complex and diverse settings. Subsequently, this article serves as preliminary research that raises research questions on the impact of globalization and technology on education and the changing role of teachers and educators. Based on the above, this article suggests the adoption of the 4C’s of 21st century learning – collaboration, communication, creativity, and critical thinking, as a vital supplement to public education, educators and teachers in order to prepare students for future jobs. Teachers and educators play undoubtedly a fundamental role in the education transformation and improvements at the school or university level. In order to understand the changing role of the teachers in the 21st century, a study on the subjective world of the teacher as well as the analysis of the factors that influence the ever-changing global education is deemed necessary.

REVIEW : Capsule Endoscopy-Where Are We at 2011 and Where Are We Headed?

        ( Rami Eliakim ) 대한장연구학회 2012 Intestinal Research Vol.10 No.3

Since its introduction over 10 years ago, capsule endoscopy has become an important investigational tool of small bowel, and thereafter of esophageal and colonic pathologies. Over the years, 2nd generation capsules were developed for all three sites, as was a non-video 2nd generation agile patency capsule to confirm functional patency of the GI tract. Three additional competitive small bowel video capsules have been introduced as well (EndoCapsule, Miro capsule and the OMOM capsule). The present review will describe the available capsules in the market, the procedure itself, present indications and future expectations. (Intest Res 2012;10:235-243)

      • Color Video Sequences Encryption/Decryption Processes Using Several Color Keys Images

Rami El Sawda,Ayman Alfalou,Habib Hamam 보안공학연구지원센터 2008 International Journal of Security and Its Applicat Vol.2 No.2

An optical encrypted color video sequence based on a spectral fusion of information has been proposed. Each color image of the sequence is decomposed into three basic color components. Pertinent information fusion is considered as segmentation. Encrypting consists in modulating each of these three components of the image spectrum by a corresponding phase mask. This phase mask includes pertinent information collected from various encrypted color keys according to a fusion criterion. As encrypting keys are formed by real images, it becomes an impossible task to get the target image by any trial and error random images techniques. For decrypting, a simple algorithm based on segmented correlation filters is proposed. Simulation results corroborate the effectiveness of our algorithm.

      • Shape Terra: 열지속특성을 응용한 CAD 피쳐 인식 도구

        Ramy Harik,백승엽(Seung-Yeob Baek),Barend-Jan Van Bruchem,Michel Van Tooren (사)한국CDE학회 2015 한국 CAD/CAM 학회 학술발표회 논문집 Vol.2015 No.동계

In many CAD/CAM/CAPP applications, recognizing geometric features is of ubiquitous need. Recognizing and analyzing geometric features in a mechanical part will augment manufacturing knowledge within the product development process. Although feature recognition is progressing steadily in many computer graphics applications, it is still an undiscovered area in mechanical design; we are still lacking a feasible solution for feature recognition that can be applied specifically to the CAD parts. In this paper, we will present Shape Terra; our recent advance in CAD feature recognition technology. Shape Terra identifies the typical mechanical features from a given CAD part by utilizing the findings of traditional heat transfer theory, which says that salient features tend to retain the heat more whereas flat surfaces tend to lose it faster. Furthermore, each feature is analyzed and assigned with its meaning, such as design parameters, manufacturability, and so on. Various CAD/CAM/CAPP applications will profit from such information.

The Outcome of Radiofrequency Kyphoplasty in the Treatment of Vertebral Compression Fractures in Osteoporotic Patients

        Ramy Hegazy,Hesham El-Mowafi,Mahmood Hadhood,Yasser Hannout,Yasser Allam,Jeorg Silbermann 대한척추외과학회 2019 Asian Spine Journal Vol.13 No.3

Study Design: Retrospective study. Purpose: The study aims to assess the effectiveness and safety of radiofrequency (RF) kyphoplasty in the treatment of vertebral compression fractures (VCFs) in osteoporotic patients. Overview of Literature: Vertebroplasty and balloon kyphoplasty are established procedures for the treatment of osteoporotic VCFs. However, RF kyphoplasty is a new method which controls cement viscosity. Methods: We reviewed the results of 41 consecutive patients with 23 thoracic and 38 lumbar VCFs who underwent RF kyphoplasty. The study population included 14 males (34%) and 27 females (66%). The mean patients age was 78 years (range, 51–89 years), and the follow-up period was 1 year. Clinical and radiographic analyses were performed during follow-up at 6 weeks, 6 months, and 1 year. All patients were assessed clinically pre- and postoperative using the Visual Analog Scale (VAS) and Oswestry Disability Index (ODI). Radiological assessment with X-ray in two views preoperatively, postoperatively, and during follow-up visits. Results: The mean preoperative VAS was 8.7 (range, 5–10; standard deviation [SD], 1.2). Postoperatively, VAS decreased by 3.3 (range, 2–5; SD, 0.9). At the end of the follow-up, VAS decreased by 1.22 (range, 0–7; SD, 1.6). The mean preoperative ODI score was 85.9, decreasing to 9.6 postoperatively and improving to 18.4 during the 1-year follow-up. The mean local kyphotic angle was 9.04° before the procedure and decreased by a mean of 6.16° after the operation and at the end of the follow-up. The mean increase in vertebral body height was 3.3 mm postoperatively and after 1-year follow-up. The rate of cement leakage was 8% (five out of 61 levels of fracture). Conclusions: RF kyphoplasty is a safe and effective augmentation technique with an advantage of controlling the cement viscosity to minimize the risk of cement leakage. It also shortens operation time.

Mechanical Properties and Thermal Stability of Waste PVC/HDPE Blend Prepared by Twin-screw Extruder

        ( Rami Lee ),( Se-ho Park ),( Jong-sung Baek ),( Hyoungsan Kye ),( Kwang-hwan Jhee ),( Daesuk Bang ) 한국고무학회 2019 엘라스토머 및 콤포지트 Vol.54 No.1

Recycling of waste polyvinyl chloride plastics has attracted much attention due to environmental problems, but the poor mechanical properties, low thermal stability, frequent breakage of strands, and melt cracking of the waste plastics have limited their widespread use. To overcome these disadvantages of waste PVC (W-PVC), recycled PVC powder blend was prepared by adding high-density polyethylene (HDPE) and ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) as a heat stabilizer and compatibilizer, respectively. An intermeshing co-rotating twin screw extruder was used to prepare the blend, and the characteristics of the blend were analyzed by SEM and TGA, and by using a UTM and Izod impact tester. The impact strength was improved as the EVA content increased for the W-PVC/HDPE (80/20 wt%) blend. As the HDPE and EVA contents increased in the W-PVC/HDPE/EVA blend, the impact strength increased. SEM observations also revealed the improved interfacial adhesion for the EVA-containing blend.

Enhanced Corrosion Protection Performance by Novel Inhibitor-Loaded Hybrid Sol-Gel Coatings on Mild Steel in 3.5% NaCl Medium

Rami K. Suleiman 한국부식방식학회 2019 Corrosion Science and Technology Vol.18 No.5

The sol-gel methodology has been applied successfully in the synthesis of a novel hybrid coating basedon dimethoxymethyl-n-octadecylsilane precursor. The newly synthesized parent coating was functionalizedfurther with two commercially-available corrosion-inhibitive pigments Moly-white® 101-ED and HfucophosZapp®, applied to mild steel panels, and immersed continuously in 3.5% NaCl electrolytic solution for288 h. The corrosion protection performance of the prepared functional coatings was evaluated usingelectrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and DC polarization techniques. An enhancement in the barrierproperties has been revealed from the electrochemical characterization data of the hybrid films, in comparisonwith untreated mild steel substrates following long-term immersion in 3.5% NaCl. The corrosion resistanceproperties of the newly developed coatings over mild steel substrates found to be largely dependent onthe type of the loaded inhibitive pigment in which the Moly-white inhibitor has a positive impact on thecorrosion protection performance of the parent coating, while an opposite behavior was observed upon mixingthe base polymeric matrix with the commercially-available Zapp corrosion inhibitor.
