An experiment was conducted to study the performance, carcass traits, serum lipid profile and immune competence in commercial broilers (2 to 42 d of age) fed graded levels (25, 50, 75 and 100%) of finger millet (FM) (Elusine coracana) in place (w/w) of yellow maize (YM). Each diet was fed to eight replicates (five female Vencobb broilers/replicate) housed in stainless steel battery brooders. The estimated metabolizable energy content of FM was about 540 kcal less than the YM. FM contained more protein (10.42 vs. 9.05%) and fibre (9.52 vs. 2.24%) compared to YM. Body weight gain, ready to cook yield, relative weights of giblet, liver, intestine and length of intestine at 42 d of age was not affected due to replacing YM with FM. But, the feed efficiency decreased in broilers fed diets containing 75 and 100% FM in place of YM at both 21 and 42 d of age. The amount of fat deposited in abdominal area decreased and the relative weight of gizzard increased with increase in level of FM in the diet. The serum HDL cholesterol at 21 and 42 d of age and serum triglycerides at 42 d of age decreased with increase in level of FM in diet. The relative weight of spleen and antibody titers against sheep red blood cells (SRBC) at 5 d post inoculation (PI) decreased in broilers fed FM at 100% of YM. However, the relative weight of bursa, SRBC titers at 10 d PI, antibody titers against ND virus and mortality were not affected due to incorporation of FM in place of YM in diet. The fat content in thigh muscle and liver decreased, while the protein content in these tissues increased with increase in the level of FM in broiler diet. Based on the results, it may be concluded that YM can be replaced with FM up to 25% on weight basis without affecting weight gain, carcass yields and immunity in commercial broiler diet (up to 42 d of age). Further, inclusion of finger millet reduced the fat deposition in thigh muscle, liver and in abdominal area compared to those fed maize as the principal source of energy.

The optimum design of liquid column dampers in seismic vibration control considering systemparameter uncertainty is usually performed by minimizing the unconditional response of a structure withoutany consideration to the variation of damper performance due to uncertainty. However, the system sodesigned may be sensitive to the variations of input system parameters due to uncertainty. The present studyis concerned with robust design optimization (RDO) of liquid column vibration absorber (LCVA)considering random system parameters characterizing the primary structure and ground motion model. TheRDO is obtained by minimizing the weighted sum of the mean value of the root mean square displacementof the primary structure as well as its standard deviation. A numerical study elucidates the importance of theRDO procedure for design of LCVA system by comparing the RDO results with the results obtained by theconventional stochastic structural optimization procedure and the unconditional response basedoptimization.

<P>Evolution of a simple, efficient and reproducible strategy for the rational design of hierarchically structured metal chalcogenide-based supercapacitors has attracted considerable research interest in recent years. Herein, a facile wet-chemistry approach is employed to design three-dimensional forest-like porous nickel sulfide nanotrees on nickel foam (NiS NTs/Ni foam) for use as a cathode material in hybrid supercapacitors. The growth time plays a crucial role in controlling the surface morphology, and the optimal growth conditions (3 h at 85 °C) led to the growth of forest-like NiS NTs/Ni foam with reliable adherence. The forest-like NiS NTs/Ni foam shows maximum areal and specific capacities of 752.71 μA h cm−2 and 342.1 mA h g−1 at a current density of 4 mA cm−2, with an excellent cycling stability of 89.4%. This result is primarily due to the availability of more surface-active sites in the well-defined hierarchical architecture, which allow the rapid diffusion of electrolyte ions and minimize the electron transport limitation. Utilizing the hierarchical NiS NTs/Ni foam as a cathode and activated carbon-based anode, we further fabricated a hybrid supercapacitor, which demonstrates a wide potential window of 1.6 V with high areal energy and power densities of 0.472 mW h cm−2 and 21.5 mW cm−2, respectively. The fabricated hybrid supercapacitor is successfully utilized to drive various electronic gadgets for real-life applications. The electrochemical performance of a hierarchically structured NiS-based binder-free electrode with our facile approach paves a new pathway for the development of novel metal chalcogenides for high-performance hybrid supercapacitors.</P>

Parallel execution of computational mechanics codes requires efficient mesh-partitioning techniques. These mesh-partitioning techniques divide the mesh into specified number of submeshes of approximately the same size and at the same time, minimise the interface nodes of the submeshes. This paper describes a new mesh partitioning technique, employing Genetic Algorithms. The proposed algorithm operates on the deduced graph (dual or nodal graph) of the given finite element mesh rather than directly on the mesh itself. The algorithm works by first constructing a coarse graph approximation using an automatic graph coarsening method. The coarse graph is partitioned and the results are interpolated onto the original graph to initialise an optimisation of the graph partition problem. In practice, hierarchy of (usually more than two) graphs are used to obtain the final graph partition. The proposed partitioning algorithm is applied to graphs derived from unstructured finite element meshes describing practical engineering problems and also several example graphs related to finite element meshes given in the literature. The test results indicate that the proposed GA based graph partitioning algorithm generates high quality partitions and are superior to spectral and multilevel graph partitioning algorithms.
STRONG MEDECINE: CONFLICT OF INTERESTS AND PHARMACEUTICAL MARKETING PRACTICES
Rama Jayanti 글로벌지식마케팅경영학회 2014 Global Marketing Conference Vol.2014 No.8
The contrasting discourses in the marketing and medical literature on pharmaceutical marketing practices motivate this study. Of particular interest is detailing and related practices which involve deploying pharmaceutical sales representatives (PSRs) to interact with physicians often for providing product information and benefits (Manchanda and Chintagunta, 2004; Mizik and Jacobson, 2004). Acutely aware that a dominant effect of detailing on physician’s prescription choices is problematic, Gonul et al. (p. 90) summarize the marketing literature by noting that, “there are no reasons for public concern regarding the social implications of the reviewed personal selling practice employed by drug manufacturers because its effect is mostly informative.” By contrast, taking a combative and aversive view of PSRs, leading medical scholars and practitioners recommend strict sequestration of commercial interests of industry from the physician (Steinman, et al. 2006). Major medical centers including Yale, Harvard, Duke, Stanford, University of Pennsylvania, Henry Ford Health System, and UCLA have banned physicians from receiving monetary or non-monetary gifts, and PSRs from visiting patient care areas. Prestigious medical journals such as The British Medical Journal and Journal of American Medical Association, along with International Committee of Medical Journal Editors and World Association of Medical Editors, now require all authors to include an explicit disclosure of industry sponsored research and, in some cases, to conduct independent statistical analysis as a condition for publication (DeAngelis, 2006). Using public documents from a recent court case, I analyzed pharmaceutical industry’s marketing practices and their role in creating externalities that compromise trust and fiduciary responsibility governing physician-patient relationship. Results indicate that externalities are complicit in exploiting COI and undermining consumer welfare in medical markets. Our study contributes to the research into, and practice of pharmaceutical marketing practices for interacting with physicians in several ways. First, I develop a conceptual framework based on COI theory that has substantially informed the medical profession’s discourse but received minimal, if any, attention in the marketing literature (Moore, Cain, Loewenstein, & Bazerman, 2005). This framework posits an embedded view of physician exchanges that presents new insights that have heretofore remained unexplored in the marketing literature. Second, building on the COI framework, I outline an orchestration thesis that reliably represents the medical profession’s guiding approach for seeking and evaluating evidence relating to industry’s marketing practices. Unlike the marketing literature’s interest in examining the efficiency and effectiveness of different marketing instruments such as detailing and journal publishing, the orchestration thesis focuses on strategic intent that underlies all marketing instruments. As such, the orchestration thesis offers a competing perspective that challenges the evidence in the marketing literature. Third, using a novel approach based on systematic analysis of court documents, I examine the support, if any, for the orchestration thesis in a specific contextual setting. Finally, the current study builds the conceptual and empirical foundation to bridge the marketing and medical literatures. Such a bridge is critical in developing a common ground for reconciling disparate viewpoints and redirecting marketing practices.
