Analysis and design for torsion in reinforced and prestressed concrete beams

        Rahal, Khaldoun N. Techno-Press 2001 Structural Engineering and Mechanics, An Int'l Jou Vol.11 No.6

This paper presents a simplified method for the design and analysis of non-prestressed, partially prestressed, and fully prestressed concrete beams subjected to pure torsion. The proposed model relates the torsional strength to the concrete compressive strength and to the amounts of transverse and longitudinal reinforcement. To check the adequacy of this simple method, the calculated strength and mode of failure are checked against the experimental results of 17 prestressed concrete 66 reinforced concrete beam tests available in the literature, and very good agreement is found. The simplicity of the method is illustrated by two examples, one for design and another for analysis.

      • Ultralow Lattice Thermal Conductivity and Enhanced Thermoelectric Performance in SnTe:Ga Materials

        Al Rahal Al Orabi, Rabih,Hwang, Junphil,Lin, Chan-Chieh,Gautier, Ré,gis,Fontaine, Bruno,Kim, Woochul,Rhyee, Jong-Soo,Wee, Daehyun,Fornari, Marco American Chemical Society 2017 Chemistry of materials Vol.29 No.2

Ultralow thermal conductivity is of great interest in a variety of fields, including thermoelectric energy conversion. We report, for the first time, experimental evidence that Ga-doping in SnTe may lower the lattice thermal conduction slightly below the theoretical amorphous minimum at high temperature. Such an effect is justified by the spontaneous formation of nanoprecipitates we characterized as GaTe. Remarkably, the introduction of Ga (2-10%) in SnTe also improves the electronic transport properties by activating several hole pockets in the multivalley valence band. Experimental results are supported by density functional theory calculations. The thermoelectric figure of merit, ZT, reaches similar to 1 at 873 K in Sn0.96Ga0.07Te, which corresponds to an similar to 80% improvement with respect to pure SnTe.

A unified approach to shear and torsion in reinforced concrete

Khaldoun N. Rahal 국제구조공학회 2021 Structural Engineering and Mechanics, An Int'l Jou Vol.77 No.5

Reinforced concrete (RC) beams can be subjected to a complex combination of shear forces (V), torsional moments (T), flexural moments (M) and axial loads (N). This paper proposes a unified approach for the analysis of these elements. An existing model for the analysis of orthogonally reinforced concrete membrane elements subjected to in-plane shear and normal stresses is generalized to apply to the case of beams subjected to the complex loading. The combination of V and T can be critical. Torsion is modelled using the hollow-tube analogy. A direct equation for the calculation of the thickness of the equivalent hollow tube is proposed, and the shear stresses caused by V and T are combined using a simple approach. The development and the evaluation of the model are described. The calculations of the model are compared to experimental data from 350 beams subjected to various combinations of stress-resultants and to the calculations of the ACI and the CSA codes. The proposed model provides the most favorable results. It is also shown that it can accurately model the interaction between V and T. The proposed model provides a unified treatment of shear in beams subjected to complex stress-resultants and in thin membrane elements subjected to in-plane stresses.

Analysis Testing of Sociocultural Factors Influence on Human Reliability within Sociotechnical Systems: The Algerian Oil Companies

Laidoune, Abdelbaki,Rahal Gharbi, Med El Hadi Occupational Safety and Health Research Institute 2016 Safety and health at work Vol.7 No.3

Background: The influence of sociocultural factors on human reliability within an open sociotechnical systems is highlighted. The design of such systems is enhanced by experience feedback. Methods: The study was focused on a survey related to the observation of working cases, and by processing of incident/accident statistics and semistructured interviews in the qualitative part. In order to consolidate the study approach, we considered a schedule for the purpose of standard statistical measurements. We tried to be unbiased by supporting an exhaustive list of all worker categories including age, sex, educational level, prescribed task, accountability level, etc. The survey was reinforced by a schedule distributed to 300 workers belonging to two oil companies. This schedule comprises 30 items related to six main factors that influence human reliability. Results: Qualitative observations and schedule data processing had shown that the sociocultural factors can negatively and positively influence operator behaviors. Conclusion: The explored sociocultural factors influence the human reliability both in qualitative and quantitative manners. The proposed model shows how reliability can be enhanced by some measures such as experience feedback based on, for example, safety improvements, training, and information. With that is added the continuous systems improvements to improve sociocultural reality and to reduce negative behaviors.

Electrodeposition of SnS Thin film Solar Cells in the Presence of Sodium Citrate

Kihal, Rafiaa,Rahal, Hassiba,Affoune, Abed Mohamed,Ghers, Mokhtar The Korean Electrochemical Society 2017 Journal of electrochemical science and technology Vol.8 No.3

SnS films have been prepared by electrodeposition technique onto Cu and ITO substrates using acidic solutions containing tin chloride and sodium thiosulfate with sodium citrate as an additive. The effects of sodium citrate on the electrochemical behavior of electrolyte bath containing tin chloride and sodium thiosulfate were investigated by cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometry techniques. Deposited films were characterized by XRD, FTIR, SEM, optical, photoelectrochemical, and electrical measurements. XRD data showed that deposited SnS with sodium citrate on both substrates were polycrystalline with orthorhombic structures and preferential orientations along (111) directions. However, SnS films with sodium citrate on Cu substrate exhibited a good crystalline structure if compared with that deposited on ITO substrates. FTIR results confirmed the presence of SnS films at peaks 1384 and $560cm^{-1}$. SEM images revealed that SnS with sodium citrate on Cu substrate are well covered with a smooth and uniform surface morphology than deposited on ITO substrate. The direct band gap of the films is about 1.3 eV. p-type semiconductor conduction of SnS was confirmed by photoelectrochemical and Hall Effect measurements. Electrical properties of SnS films showed a low electrical resistivity of $30{\Omega}cm$, carrier concentration of $2.6{\times}10^{15}cm^{-3}$ and mobility of $80cm^2V^{-1}s^{-1}$.

Contribution to Improve Database Classification Algorithms for Multi-Database Mining

Miloudi, Salim,Rahal, Sid Ahmed,Khiat, Salim Korea Information Processing Society 2018 Journal of information processing systems Vol.14 No.3

Database classification is an important preprocessing step for the multi-database mining (MDM). In fact, when a multi-branch company needs to explore its distributed data for decision making, it is imperative to classify these multiple databases into similar clusters before analyzing the data. To search for the best classification of a set of n databases, existing algorithms generate from 1 to ($n^2-n$)/2 candidate classifications. Although each candidate classification is included in the next one (i.e., clusters in the current classification are subsets of clusters in the next classification), existing algorithms generate each classification independently, that is, without taking into account the use of clusters from the previous classification. Consequently, existing algorithms are time consuming, especially when the number of candidate classifications increases. To overcome the latter problem, we propose in this paper an efficient approach that represents the problem of classifying the multiple databases as a problem of identifying the connected components of an undirected weighted graph. Theoretical analysis and experiments on public databases confirm the efficiency of our algorithm against existing works and that it overcomes the problem of increase in the execution time.

Probabilistic Models for Local Patterns Analysis

( Khiat Salim ),( Belbachir Hafida ),( Rahal Sid Ahmed ) 한국정보처리학회 2014 Journal of information processing systems Vol.10 No.1

Recently, many large organizations have multiple data sources (MDS`) distributed over different branches of an interstate company. Local patterns analysis has become an effective strategy for MDS mining in national and international organizations. It consists of mining different datasets in order to obtain frequent patterns, which are forwarded to a centralized place for global pattern analysis. Various synthesizing models [2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 26] have been proposed to build global patterns from the forwarded patterns. It is desired that the synthesized rules from such forwarded patterns must closely match with the mono-mining results (i.e., the results that would be obtained if all of the databases are put together and mining has been done). When the pattern is present in the site, but fails to satisfy the minimum support threshold value, it is not allowed to take part in the pattern synthesizing process. Therefore, this process can lose some interesting patterns which can help the decider to make the right decision. In such situations we propose the application of a probabilistic model in the synthesizing process. An adequate choice for a probabilistic model can improve the quality of patterns that have been discovered. In this paper, we perform a comprehensive study on various probabilistic models that can be applied in the synthesizing process and we choose and improve one of them that works to ameliorate the synthesizing results. Finally, some experiments are presented in public database in order to improve the efficiency of our proposed synthesizing method.
