        Surgical Outcomes of Endoscopic Endonasal Versus Transcranial Resections of Adult Craniopharyngioma: A Meta-Analysis

        Background : The endoscopic endonasal approach (EEA) has been gaining popularity for resection of adult craniopharyngiomas. However, the safety and effectiveness of the procedure in comparison to the traditional transcranial approach (TCA) remains unestablished as previous reviews are outdated. Methouds: A literature search without language restriction was conducted in PubMed, Cochrane database, and Web of Science from conception to July 9, 2021. Cohort studies and case series that compared EEA with TCA and assessed postoperative complications, recurrence, and 30-day mortality were included. Articles, where data for adult populations could not be extracted or calculated, were excluded. Article selection and data extraction in a predesigned data extraction form were conducted in duplicate. Pooled participant data were included in a random-effects model. Results: The search yielded 227 articles, from which eight cohort studies containing 11,395 patients were included (EEA: 6,614 patients, TCA: 4,781 patients). Six studies were good quality and two were fair quality according to the Newcastle Ottawa Scale. There were significantly higher rates of cerebrospinal fluid leak (risk ratio [RR]=0.23, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.17–0.32, p<0.00001, I 2=0%) and lower rates of postoperative hypopituitarism (RR=1.40, 95% CI 1.30–1.51, p<0.00001, I 2=0%), hydrocephalus (RR=6.95, 95% CI 5.78–8.36, p<0.00001, I2=0%), visual impairment (RR=1.52, 95% CI 1.34–1.73, p<0.00001, I2=0%), and 30-day mortality (RR=5.63, 95% CI 3.87–8.19, p<0.00001, I 2=0%) after EEA. Non-significant lower rates of postoperative diabetes insipidus (RR=1.12, 95% CI 0.78–1.61, p=0.53, I2=85%) and recurrence of tumor (RR=2.69, 95% CI 0.35–20.81, p=0.34, I2=47%) were seen after EEA. Concliusion: EEA may be associated with reduced postoperative hypopituitarism, hydrocephalus, visual impairment, and 30-day mortality and higher rates of cerebrospinal fluid leak. These findings do not account for differences in tumor size and extension between the EEA and TCA cohorts. Further re- search on patients with comparable tumor characteristics is required to fully assess outcomes.

        Pest Prediction in Rice using IoT and Feed Forward Neural Network

        Rice is a fundamental staple food commodity all around the world. Globally, it is grown over 167 million hectares and occupies almost 1/5<sup>th</sup> of total cultivated land under cereals. With a total production of 782 million metric tons in 2018. In Pakistan, it is the 2<sup>nd</sup> largest crop being produced and 3<sup>rd</sup> largest food commodity after sugarcane and rice. The stem borers a type of pest in rice and other crops, Scirpophaga incertulas or the yellow stem borer is very serious pest and a major cause of yield loss, more than 90% damage is recorded in Pakistan on rice crop. Yellow stem borer population of rice could be stimulated with various environmental factors which includes relative humidity, light, and environmental temperature. Focus of this study is to find the environmental factors changes i.e., temperature, relative humidity and rainfall that can lead to cause outbreaks of yellow stem borers. this study helps to find out the hot spots of insect pest in rice field with a control of farmer’s palm. Proposed system uses temperature, relative humidity, and rain sensor along with artificial neural network to predict yellow stem borer attack and generate warning to take necessary precautions. result shows 85.6% accuracy and accuracy gradually increased after repeating several training rounds. This system can be good IoT based solution for pest attack prediction which is cost effective and accurate.

        Preconcentration of cadmium and manganese in biological samples based on a novel restricted access sorbents

        A novel restricted access sorbents based micro solid phase extraction (RAS-mSPE) for the extraction ofheavy metal from biological samples has been developed. Cadmium (Cd) and manganese (Mn) weredirectly extracted skipping the tedious, time consuming and expensive sample preparation stepexcluding all of the existing proteins. Sorbent’s (activated carbon cloths) surface was modified withbovine serum albumin through glutaraldehyde to make restricted access sorbent (RAS). Differentvariables affecting the extraction efficiency were selected for optimization. The limits of detectionobtained for Cd and Mn were 0.252 and 0.214 mg L 1, respectively. Analyte recoveries in fortified humanwhole blood serum and milk samples were found in the range of 90.3–103.9%. The procedure waseffectively used for Cd and Mn extraction in real samples devoid of any pretreatment step.

        IN VITRO THROMBIN DOSE RESPONSE ON MADIN DARBY CANINE KIDNEY CELL MONOLAYER

        Epithelial cells are known to play an important role in sustaining the airway barrier that may be impaired in certain inflammatory conditions. Recently, the use of thrombin has been reported to open the airway of patients with asthma as well as enhance the permeability of endothelial cell monolayers. We designed an in vitro model of Madin Darby Canine Kidney (MDCK) cells and the physiological functions of this model were evaluated by measuring the transepithelial resistance (TER). The epithelial cytoskeletal organization was observed by staining with Bisbenzimide and Rodamine-Phalloidin (BBZ-Phalloidin) and confirmed by fluorescence microscopy. Measurements of the TER generated values up to 2020 Ω/cm2. A dose response of thrombin was observed, showing the permeability changes in the MDCK monolayer and subsequent recovery. A relationship between TER values and cytoskeletal organization was also observed and discussed.

        <P>In addition to its genetic function, DNA is one of the most distinct and smart self-assembling nanomaterials. DNA nanotechnology exploits the predictable self-assembly of DNA oligonucleotides to design and assemble innovative and highly discrete nanostructures. Highly ordered DNA motifs are capable of providing an ultra-fine framework for the next generation of nanofabrications. The majority of these applications are based upon the complementarity of DNA base pairing: adenine with thymine, and guanine with cytosine. DNA provides an intelligent route for the creation of nanoarchitectures with programmable and predictable patterns. DNA strands twist along one helix for a number of bases before switching to the other helix by passing through a crossover junction. The association of two crossovers keeps the helices parallel and holds them tightly together, allowing the assembly of bigger structures. Because of the DNA molecule's unique and novel characteristics, it can easily be applied in a vast variety of multidisciplinary research areas like biomedicine, computer science, nano/optoelectronics, and bionanotechnology.</P>

        Electrophoretic deposition of PVA coated hydroxyapatite on 316L stainless steel

        Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) coated hydroxyapatite was deposited onto a 316L stainless steel substrate by electrophoretic deposition. Deposition was carried out in a methanol suspension at pH 5.5 using a graphite rod as an anode. Parameters such as PVA concentration, deposition voltage and time were optimized to achieve a homogeneous, crack-free adhesive coating. Techniques such as X-ray diffraction and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy were used to study the phase composition of the coated materials and the stability of hydroxyapatite in the presence of PVA.
