        Long Wave Investigation at the Shelf and in the Bays of South Kuril Islands

        Kuril 열도의 남부에 위치한 Shikotan 섬 지역에 대하여 1990-1992년간에 걸쳐 일련의 장파관측이 수행되었다. 5개 만과 Shikotan 유입부 등의 7개소에 저면 압력 측정장치를 설치하였으며, 해안에 3개의 정밀압력계가 위치하도록 하였다. 관측의 목적은 지진파랑의 관측, 해안지형의 공진특성 평가 및 부진동 생성 메카니즘의 조사에 두었다. 2시간 이상의 주기를 갖는 파동에 있어서는 의력에 의한 장파가, 30-120분 주기에서는 자유장파가 지배적이었으며, 30분 이하의 주기에서는 만의 부진동이 가장 지배적인 장파형태로 나타났다. Krabovaya만의 30분 주기 Helmholtz 모드와 Malokurilskaya만의 18.5분 주기모드가 Shikotan 내역에서 가장 중요한 파동형태이다. 대기 교란경로와 Shikotan섬 연해의 부진동 생성간에 상당한 상관관계가 있으며, 특히 대기압의 급상승은 각각 다른 부진동 주기를 갖는 여러만에 동시에 부진동을 일으킨다. 대기 스펙트럼은 매우 안정적인 것으로 나타났으며, ω<sup>-226</sup> 지수식으로 나타낼 수 있는 것으로 사료된다. A series of long wave measurements was made in the region of Shikotan Island (the South Kuril Islands) during 1990-1992: 7 bottom pressure stations were installed in 5 bays and inlets of Shikotan and 3 precise microbarographs were situated at the shore. The observations were taken in order to monitor tsunami waves, estimate resonance features of coastal topography, and investigate seiche generation mechanism. It was found that forced long waves dominate in the motions with periods exceeding 2 hours, freely propagating long waves prevail at periods of 30-120 min and eigen-oscillations of bays (seiches) are the predominant type of long waves at periods less than 30 min. The Helmholtz mode with period 30 min in Krabovaya Bay and 18.5 min in Malokurilskaya Bay is the most important type of wave motion in the inner Shikotan basins. There is a good correlation between passages of atmospheric disturbances and generation of seiches near the coast of Shikotan Island. In particular, jumps in atmospheric pressure excite seiches in different bays simultaneously, in each one with the corresponding dominant period. The atmospheric spectra were remarkably smooth and stable, and could be described by a ω<sup>-2</sup>26/ power law.

        How Americans Feel About Asian Countries and Why

        Americans feelings about foreign countries are embedded in foreign policy belief systems and affect policy preferences. The analysis of nine surveys of the U.S. general public conducted between 1978 and 2006 indicates that on average Americans have had rather lukewarm or slightly cool, nearly neutral feelings toward China, India, South Korea, Taiwan and Indonesia; warm feelings toward Japan and Australia; and cold feelings toward North Korea and (at least since 2001) toward Pakistan and Afghanistan.Individuals feelings are affected by certain personal and social characteristics. High levels of formal education tend to make people feel considerably warmer toward most of these countries especially Pakistan, Afghanistan, and India. Education has part of its effect through increased information: those who know more about the world generally express warmer feelings. But most important are internationalist attitudes, especially putting a relatively low priority on U.S. domestic threats and concerns, embracing capitalism and world markets, and espousing world antipoverty goals. National security considerations play only a limited part. Policy implications are discussed.

        Copper- and Zinc-Enriched Mycelium of Agaricus blazei Murrill: Bioaccumulation and Bioavailability

        Agaricus blazeiis an edible mushroom with medicinal properties. To obtain organic combinations of poten-tial utility as a food dietary supplement, the accumulation and potential bioavailability of copper (Cu) and zinc (Zn) onmycelium grown in the presence of these metals were studied. At 400 ppm, the mycelium accumulated 449 and 163 timesthe basal content of Cu and Zn, respectively. When mycelia cultivated with nonmycotoxic concentrations of Cu or Zn (100and 200 ppm) were subjected to sequential chemical extraction and simulated gastrointestinal digestion, close to 90% of themetals accumulated in the available nonresidual fraction, which was similar to or better than the values found in two com-mercial supplements. The solubility in the simulated digestive fluids was 3034% and 1833%, i.e., 6098% and 911% ofthe recommended daily intake for Cu and Zn, respectively, with only 1 g of mycelium.

        The monthly mean sea levels at 48 stations located at the East and Yellow Seas coasts of Korea, Russia and Japan are processed to investigate seasonal sea level variations. The strong seasonal variations are found to be at the west coast of Korea (42.1 cm in Kunsan), in the region of the Korea strait and near the southern part of Primorye (30-33 cm); the weak ones near the southwestern coast of the Sakhalin Island (10-12 cm). Practically for the whole study area except the southwest Sakhalin, the general picture of the seasonal sea level changes is alike: the mean sea level rises in summer-autumn and falls in winter-spring. The spectral analysis of the records also shows that the seasonal oscillations strongly dominate in the sea level variations, more than 80% or total energy in the southern part of the investigated region and 50-70% in the northern part relate to these oscillations. The annal peak significantly prevails in spectra of the monthly sea levels for the majority of stations, the semiannual peak is also well manifested, but the seasonal peaks of higher order (corresponding to the periods of four and three months) reveal only at some records. The maximal amplitudes of annual component by a least square method are found at the Yellow Sea coast of Korea (20-21 cm) and also near the Japanese coast of the korea Strait (19-19 cm). The semiannual component has the maximal amplitudes (3-4 cm) near the south and southwestern coasts of the Sakhalin Island. The annual range of the sea levels is much weaker here than in the other regions, the relative investment of the seasonal oscillations in total energetic budget is only 35-40%, annual ($A_1$) and semiannual ($A_2$) components have nearly the same amplitude (seasonal factor $F=A_1/A_2=0.9-1.2$). On the basis of the present examination on sea level changes together with the results of Tomizawa et. al.(1984) the whole investigated area may be divided into 10 subregions, 2 of them are related to the Yellow Sea and Western part of the Korea Strait (Y1, Y2), the other ones (E1-E8) to the East Sea.
