Understanding predictor effects of computational thinking skills and media and technology use and attitudes of pre-service teachers for STEM awareness

Rıdvan Ata,Mustafa Çevik 한국교육개발원 2020 KEDI Journal of Educational Policy Vol.17 No.1

This study proposes and tests a model that explains STEM awareness of pre-service teachers by examining computational thinking skills, media and technology use and attitudes, and demographic variables including gender, high school type and parent educational background. A total of 337 participants who enrolled in education faculties at three state universities in different regions of Turkey participated in the study. “STEM Awareness Scale”, “Computational Thinking Skills Scale”, “Media and Technology Use and Attitudes Scale” and demographic information forms were used as data collection instruments. The data were analyzed through statistical tests including structural equation modelling. Fit indices of the established model were within an acceptable range. Analysis demonstrated a positive relation amongst computational thinking and media and technology use and attitudes and STEM awareness. In addition, results of structural equation modeling revealed that these factors were significant predictors of STEM awareness. Similarly, the study found that STEM awareness was significantly predicted by some demographic variables such as majors, age, and mother’s educational background. Recommendations for educationalists and policymakers are proposed.

Mortality-Related Risk Factors in Geriatric Patients with Hip Fracture

        Rıdvan Gonul,Pınar Tosun Tasar,Kutsi Tuncer,Omer Karasahin,Dogan Nasır Binici,Can Sevinc,Mustafa Turgut,Sevnaz Sahin 대한노인병학회 2023 Annals of geriatric medicine and research Vol.27 No.2

Background: Mortality rates after hip fractures increase by up to 30% with age. This study investigated the contribution of various parameters to prognosis and mortality. Methods: Our study prospectively examined patients with hip fracture aged 65 years and over who applied to the Atatürk University Medical Faculty Hospital Orthopedics Service in 2020–2021. Results: The 120 patients included in the study had a mean age of 79.71±7.27 years, and 51.7% were female. Twenty patients (16.7%) died within the first 30 days after a hip fracture. They had a significantly lower median Lawton–Brody instrumental activities of daily living (IADL) scale score (p=0.045) and a higher rate of malnutrition according to the Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA) score (p=0.016). Additionally, these patients with 30-day mortality had a significantly lower rate of surgical treatment (p=0.027) and a longer time from injury to surgery (p=0.014). The time to surgery was a significant independent risk factor for 30-day mortality, with each 1-hour delay increasing the odds of mortality by 1.066 (odds ratio [OR]=1.066; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.001–1.013; p=0.013). In addition, the presence of malnutrition was another independent risk factor that increased the odds of mortality by 4.166 times (OR=4.166; 95% CI, 1.285–13.427; p=0.017). Conclusion: We recommend placing more importance on supportive treatment in patients presenting with hip fractures, especially in those with malnutrition; performing surgical intervention as early as possible; and more closely following up with patients with the aforementioned risk factors.

Comparison of Limberg flap and excision and primary closure of pilonidal sinus disease, in terms of quality of life and complications

        Ahmet Serdar Karaca,Rıdvan Ali,Muzaffer Capar,Sezar Karaca 대한외과학회 2013 Annals of Surgical Treatment and Research(ASRT) Vol.85 No.5

Purpose: The aim of this study was to compare two different treatment methods for pilonidal sinus with respect to complications, recurrence, and patient quality of life. Methods: Five hundred forty-nine patients who underwent surgery for pilonidal sinus between January 2007 and August 2012 were included in this study. The patients were classified into group I (excision and primary closure) and group II (Limberg flap). Results: There was no significant difference in the mean age and gender of the patients between groups I and II (P = 0.512 and P = 0.472). The duration of surgical operation was lower in group I (P < 0.001). There was no significant difference in hospitalization time after surgery, minor complications, and recurrence between the groups (P = 0.674, P = 1.000, and P = 1.000, respectively). The time required for pain-free walking, urinating, and returning to work was significantly lower in group II (P < 0.001, P < 0.001, and P < 0.001, respectively). The patients in group I stated that they were more satisfied in terms of aesthetics (P < 0.001). Conclusion: According to the results of this study, Limberg flap method has better outcomes compared with excision and primary closure. Therefore, we recommend Limberg flap for treatment of pilonidal sinus disease.

Double-imprinted potentiometric sensors based on ligand exchange for the determination of dimethoate

Eyüp Bektaşoğlu,Ebru Birlik Özkütük,Arzu Ersöz,Rıdvan Say 한국화학공학회 2015 Korean Journal of Chemical Engineering Vol.32 No.8

This paper describes a dimethoate imprinted polymeric potentiometric sensor for the determination of dimethoate that was designed by dispersing the dimethoate-imprinted polymer in dibutyl phthalate plasticizer and then embedded in polyvinyl chloride matrix. The method is based on molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP), which can be synthesized by using dimethoate as a template molecule, chitosan-Cd(II), and 3-mercaptopropyl-trimethoxysilane as a functional monomer and TEOS, and ephychlorohydrin as a cross-linking agent. We have studied a method for the selective binding behavior of dimethoate compounds on the surface of imprinted polymers which is prepared using ligand-exchange (LE) (chitosan-Cd(II)) monomer. The MIP-LE-1 and MIP-LE-2 based membranes have shown a detection limit of 4.3×10−6mmolL−1 and 3.5.10−5 mmolL−1, respectively. The sensor has exhibited a response time of 35min for MIP-LE-1 and 120min for MIP-LE-2. They are stable for more than three months.

Silan based paraoxon memories onto QCM electrodes

Ebru Birlik Ozkutuk,Sibel Emir Diltemiz,Elif Ozalp,Arzu Ersoz,Rıdvan Say 한국공업화학회 2013 Journal of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Vol.19 No.6

In this study, a novel quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) based on the modification of paraoxon-imprinted polymer onto a QCM with a high selectivity and sensitivity has been developed for the determination of paraoxon. The QCM sensor has characterized using AFM and ellipsometer. The performance of the QCM sensor has evaluated and presented good reproducibility, shorter response time (20 min), wider linear range (0.02–10 mM) and low detection limit (0.02 mM). The results have shown that the selectivity of QCM sensor has found as being very high in the presence of parathion which is similar in structure with paraoxon.

Synergistic effect of binanoenzyme and cryogel column on the production of formic acid from carbondioxide

Yi gitcan Sümbelli,Özlem Biçen Ünlüer,Arzu Ersöz,Rıdvan Say 한국공업화학회 2019 Journal of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Vol.76 No.-

In this study, binanoenzyme (BNE) was synthesized using FateDH and Cyt-C in same bionano-interface;by formation of formate dehydrogenase-co-cytochrome C by using ANADOLUCA method. Thesynthesized novel binanoenzyme was embedded into HEMA based cryogel column and the conversionof CO2 to formic acid was investigated by using this cryogel column. To maintain the conversion, CO2saturated water was passed through the cryogel column and the converted formic acid was analyzedusing HPLC. The parameters which has an effect on conversion such as pH, sample volume and CO2concentration were analyzed. The results showed that the conversion process was succeeded effectively.
