Plasmon-Coupled CdSe/ZnS and CdTe/CdS/ZnS Coreshells for Hybrid Light Emitting Devices

        Rice, Quinton,Hayes, Anderson,Jung, Sungsoo,Wang, Andrew,Cho, Hyoyoung,Kim, Wan-Joong,Yu, William,Abdel-Fattah, Mahmoud,Tabibi, Bagher,Seo, Jaetae American Scientific Publishers 2016 Journal of nanoscience and nanotechnology Vol.16 No.2

Plasmon-coupled CdSe/ZnS and CdTe/CdS/ZnS coreshells are investigated for their optoelectronic applications because of their high color purity, wide optical tunability, large PL enhancement, and compact and easy integration into electronic devices. The quantum confinement of carriers within quantum dots (QDs) with sizes near the exciton Bohr radius (CdSe similar to 5.8 nm, CdTe similar to 7 nm) exhibits the features of discrete energy states and blue -shift from the bulk bandgap (CdSe 718 nm, CdTe 863 nm) in the optical spectrum. While the fluorescence from the QDs is attributable to the exciton carrier recombination, large PL enhancement and fast emission time is achieved through plasmonexciton coupling via the Coulomb interaction, Large PL enhancement of QDs in the vicinity of plasmonic particles was observed and attributed to the reduction of the non-radiative decay rate and large local field enhancement. The large PL enhancement and wide optical tunability along with high color purity from plasmon-coupled QDs enables the realization of hybrid LEDs.

RF plasma functionalized carbon surfaces for supporting sensor architectures

        J.S. Quinton,A. Deslandes,A. Barlow,J.G. Shapter,C. Fairman,J.J. Gooding,D.B. Hibbert 한국물리학회 2008 Current Applied Physics Vol.8 No.3,4

Carbon has a number of properties that make it ideal for use in sensor and electrical applications. Using radio frequency plasma with different precursor gases and operating plasma conditions, it is possible to pre-treat a variety of carbon surfaces in preparation for further molecular attachment, or surface functionalization. Research in our laboratory involves studies on highly ordered pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) as a model carbon substrate and pyrolysed photoresist films (PPF). Plasma treated surfaces have been characterised using a variety of surface sensitive techniques. We will report on results obtained using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy to probe the chemical nature of the treated surfaces, and hence the extent of treatment. Time of flight secondary-ion mass spectrometry (ToFSIMS) has been utilised to determine the extent of hydrogenation after plasma treatment. Scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM) measurements provide morphological information about the treated surfaces, in particular damage and a severe change in surface structures that may be caused by various plasma treatments. Etching and/or nucleation and growth features are also observed and will be discussed, with the types of features and their distribution strongly dependent on the precursor gas that is used to support the plasma. Hepatic and Renal Cysteine Sulfinic Acid Decarboxylase Activities in Cats Fed Different Levels of Dietary Protein and Taurine

Taesun Park,Quinton R. Rogers 한국식품영양과학회 1999 Preventive Nutrition and Food Science Vol.4 No.1

In order to evaluate the dietary regulation of cysteine sulfinic acid decarboxylase (EC 4.1.1.29) in cats, activity and protein content of CSAD were assessed in the liver and kidney of cats fed different levels of dietary protein, with and without taurine. Four groups of cats were fed one of the following diets for 5 weeks: 20% protein and taurine-free diet (LPOT); 20% protein and 0.15% taurine diet (LPNT); 60% protein and taurine-free diet (HPOT); and 60% protein and 0.15% taurine diet (HPNT). CSAD activity was determined in the liver and kidney of cats by measuring ¹⁴CO₂ released from [1-¹⁴C]-L cysteine sulfinic acid. CSAD protein was quantified using an immunochemical method. CSAD activity was extremely low in cat tissues, among which kidney showed the highest activity which was 0.118±0.050, and 0.377±0.056 nmolㆍmin^(-1)ㆍ㎎ soluble protein^(-1) in animals fed LPOT and HPOT, respectively. Even though renal CSAD protein content was 18-55% of the hepatic CSAD protein content, renal CSAD activity was 1.3~6.5 times of the hepatic CSAD activity. Renal CSAD activities of cats fed 60% protein were about 1.6~3.2 times those of animals fed 20% protein, and hepatic CSAD activity was not significantly affected by the dietary level of protein. Taurine depletion significantly elevated both hepatic and renal CSAD activities above the values for cats having normal taurine status most probably as an adaptive response.

A Collaborative Framework between Industry and Academia to Stimulate Entrepreneurship through Business Incubation

        Maxwell Chanakira,Quinton C. Kanhukamwe 세계과학도시연합 2016 World Technopolis Review Vol.5 No.1

Entrepreneurship development has increasingly become a global solution to address the problem of rising unemployment. Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) have become important tools in improving the economic performance and social well-being of nations. When universities and industry work together to push the boundaries of knowledge, they become a powerful engine for innovation and economic growth. This paper is based on focus group interviews and discussions conducted with key players involved in the HIT-Sandown-UNDP Business Incubation Programme in Harare Zimbabwe. The business incubation project sought to support young Zimbabweans to transform their technical prototypes into commercially and socially viable ventures. As a result, a total of 10 prototypes were refined and investor ready business plans were developed for capital sourcing purposes. It was only through the coming together of the partners that real transformation of the lives of the participants was achieved through learning valuable business skills, coaching and mentoring. University-industry partnerships are a useful vehicle of setting up sustainable business incubation centres.

Current National and International Guidelines for the Management of Male Hypogonadism: Helping Clinicians to Navigate Variation in Diagnostic Criteria and Treatment Recommendations

Ahmed Al-Sharefi,Richard Quinton 대한내분비학회 2020 Endocrinology and metabolism Vol.35 No.3

Male hypogonadism—rebadged by some as testosterone deficiency syndrome—is a clinical and biochemical diagnosis of increasingworldwide interest. Organic male hypogonadism—usually permanent—is well-established, but aging men may also exhibit lowerserum testosterone levels; principally due to burden of extra-gonadal comorbidities such as obesity, diabetes and metabolic syndrome, but with an underlying intact hypothalamo-pituitary-testicular (HPT) axis capable of springing back into operation once comorbidities are addressed. Despite encouraging observational data and plausible theoretical underpinning, evidence for efficacy andsafety of testosterone in this “aging” group of men is lacking; addressing comorbid illnesses remains the key priority instead. Nevertheless, in recent years, accumulation of misleading information online has triggered a global tsunami of testosterone prescriptions. Despite this, many men with organic hypogonadism remain undiagnosed or untreated; many more face a diagnostic odyssey beforeachieving care by the appropriate specialist. As testosterone therapy is not without risk several clinical practice guidelines have beenpublished specialist societies to guide physicians on best practice. However, these are heterogeneous in key areas, reflecting divergent approaches to the same evidence basis. Herein, we navigate the major clinical practice guidelines on male hypogonadism andtest their respective recommendations against current best evidence.

High C-rate performance of LiFePO4/carbon nanofibers composite cathode for Li-ion batteries

        Adewale A. Adepoju,Quinton L. Williams 한국물리학회 2020 Current Applied Physics Vol.20 No.1

Carbon nanofibers (CNFs) were incorporated into LiFePO4 composite cathode through conventional slurry formulation. Pristine LiFePO4 and modified LiFePO4 cathode samples were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, galvanostatic charge/discharge measurements, and cyclic voltammetry. Electrochemical measurements at room temperature showed LiFePO4/CNF composite to exhibit a higher specific discharge capacity of ~150 mAh g−1 at 0.1C, excellent high rate performance at >5C capability rates, and better cycling stability with 98.4% capacity retention at 5C after 200 cycles. The improved high C-rate performance of the LiFePO4/CNF composite cathode can be attributed to long-range conductive networks formed through bridges created by the CNFs. The enhanced battery performance indicates promise for high-power applications
