Advantage of the Intensive Light Scattering by Plasmonic Nanoparticles in Velocimetry

Tengda Rong,Quanshui Li 한국광학회 2022 Current Optics and Photonics Vol.6 No.1

Tracers are one of the critical factors for improving the performance of velocimetry. Silver and gold nanoparticles as tracers with localized surface-plasmon resonance are analyzed for their scattering properties. The scattering cross sections, angular distribution of the scattering, and equivalent scattering cross sections from 53° and 1.5° half-angle cones at 532 nm are calculated, with particle sizes in the nanoscale range. The 53° and 1.5° half-angle cones used as examples correspond respectively to the collection cones for microscope objectives in microscopic measurements and camera lenses in macroscopic measurements. We find that there is a transitional size near 35 nm when comparing the equivalent scattering cross sections between silver and gold nanoparticles in water at 532 nm. The equivalent scattering cross section of silver nanoparticles is greater or smaller than that of gold nanoparticles when the particle radius is greater or smaller than 35 nm respectively. When the radius of the plasmonic nanoparticles is smaller than about 44 nm, their equivalent scattering cross sections are at least ten times that of TiO 2nanoparticles. Plasmonic nanoparticles are promising for velocimetry applications.

Theoretical Results for a Dipole Plasmonic Mode Based on a Forced Damped Harmonic Oscillator Model

Tongtong Hao,Quanshui Li 한국광학회 2023 Current Optics and Photonics Vol.7 No.4

The localized surface-plasmon resonance has drawn great attention, due to its unique optical properties. In this work a general theoretical description of the dipole mode is proposed, using the forced damped harmonic oscillator model of free charges in an ellipsoid. The restoring force and driving force are derived in the quasistatic approximation under general conditions. In this model, metal is regarded as composed of free charges and bound charges. The bound charges form the dielectric background which has a dielectric function. Those free charges undergo a collective motion in the dielectric background under the driving force. The response of free charges will not be included in the dielectric function like the Drude model. The extinction and scattering cross sections as well as the damping coefficient from our model are verified to be consistent with those based on the Drude model. We introduce size effects and modify the restoring and driving forces by adding the dynamic depolarization factor and the radiation damping term to the depolarization factor. This model provides an intuitive physical picture as well as a simple theoretical description of the dipole mode of the localized surface-plasmon resonance based on free-charge collective motion.

Probing the Key Binding Sequence and Improvement of the Stability of a β-Bungarotoxin-binding Aptamer in Snake Venom

        Fengping Ye,Qili Mi,Ning Zhang,Xuemei Li,Jing Yu,Zhongping Gao,Ying Zheng,Quanshui Fan,Jie Wang,Jinglin Wang 대한화학회 2016 Bulletin of the Korean Chemical Society Vol.37 No.5

Chemical modifications of the nucleotides can improve the stability of aptamers against enzyme degradation in serum, but it is not clear whether these methods are effective in snake venom. In this study, a DNA aptamer, βB-1, which specifically recognize β-bungarotoxin and Bungarus multicinctus venom was chosen, and the key binding sequence of the aptamer was determined. Based on the secondary structure of the truncated aptamer, locked nucleic acids and 2′-O-methyl nucleotides were applied to modify the stem and loop sequences, respectively. In addition, a 3′-3′-thymidine cap was also adopted to block the 3′ end. It was shown that these chemical modifications can all enhance the stability of the aptamer in snake venom. Simultaneously, modified aptamer with the above modifications in one sequence exhibited a significantly elevated biostability, with the half-life improved from several minutes to 210 min while maintaining its binding affinity to the target.
