α-lipoic acid protects testis and epididymis against linuron-induced oxidative toxicity in adult rats

        Prathima P.,Venkaiah K.,Daveedu T.,Pavani R.,Sukeerthi S.,Gopinath M.,Sainath Sri Bhashaym 한국독성학회 2020 Toxicological Research Vol.36 No.4

Linuron is well known for its antiandrogenic property. However, the effects of linuron on testicular and epididymal pro- and antioxidant status are not well defined. On the other hand, α-lipoic acid is well known as universal antioxidant. Therefore, the purpose of this study was twofold: firstly to investigate whether linuron exposure alters antioxidant status in the testis and epididymis of rats and if so, whether the supplementation of α-lipoic acid mitigates linuron-induced oxidative toxicity in rats. To address this question, α-lipoic acid at a dose of 70 mg/Kg body weight (three times a week) was administered to linuron exposed rats (10 or 50 mg/Kg body weight, every alternate day over a period of 60 days), and the selected reproductive endpoints were analyzed after 60 days. Respective controls were maintained in parallel. Linuron at selected doses reduced testicular daily sperm count, and epididymal sperm count, sperm motility, sperm viability, and number of tail coiled sperm, reduced activity levels of 3β- and 17β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenases, decreased expression levels of StAR mRNA, inhibition of testosterone levels, and elevated levels of testicular cholesterol in rats over controls. Linuron intoxication deteriorated the structural integrity of testis and epididymis associated with reduced the reproductive performance over controls. Conversely, α-lipoic acid supplementation enhanced sperm quality and improved the testosterone synthesis pathway in linuron exposed rats over its respective control. Administration of α-lipoic acid restored inhibition of testicular and epididymal enzymatic (superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione reductase, glutathione peroxidise) and non-enzymatic (glutathione content), increased lipid peroxidation and protein carbonyl content produced by linuron in rats. α-lipoic acid supplementation inhibited the expression levels of testicular caspase-3 mRNA levels and also its activity in linuron treated rats. To summate, α-lipoic acid-induced protection of reproductive health in linuron treated rats could be attributed to its antioxidant, and steroidogenic properties.

Reproduction and Metabolism: Insights from Polycystic Ovary Syndrome

Prathima Jasti,Andrea Dunaif 대한내분비학회 2012 Endocrinology and metabolism Vol.27 No.3

Until the 1980s, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) was considered to be a poorly defined reproductive disorder. During that decade,it was recognized that PCOS was associated with profound insulin resistance and a substantially increased risk for type 2 diabetes mellitus in young women. Accordingly, the mechanisms linking the reproductive and metabolic features of the syndrome became the subject of intense investigation. Insulin is now recognized as a reproductive as well as a metabolic hormone and insulin signaling in the central nervous system participates in normal reproductive function. These insights have been directly translated into a novel therapy for PCOS with insulin sensitizing drugs. Androgens also have reversible metabolic actions to decrease insulin sensitivity and increase visceral fat. Prenatal androgen administration to non-human primates, sheep and rodents produces reproductive and metabolic features of PCOS suggesting that the disorder also has developmental origins. PCOS is highly heritable and male as well as female relatives have reproductive and metabolic phenotypes. A number of confirmed genetic susceptibility loci have now been mapped for PCOS and genes in well-known as well as novel biologic pathways have been implicated in disease pathogenesis.

Capacity Bounds in Random Wireless Networks

Alireza Babaei,Prathima Agrawal,Bijan Jabbari 한국통신학회 2012 Journal of communications and networks Vol.14 No.1

We consider a receiving node, located at the origin, and a Poisson point process (PPP) that models the locations of the desired transmitter as well as the interferers. Interference is known to be non-Gaussian in this scenario. The capacity bounds for additive non-Gaussian channels depend not only on the power of interference (i.e., up to second order statistics) but also on its entropy power which is influenced by higher order statistics as well. Therefore,a complete statistical characterization of interference is required to obtain the capacity bounds. While the statistics of sum of signal and interference is known in closed form, the statistics of interference highly depends on the location of the desired transmitter. In this paper, we show that there is a tradeoff between entropy power of interference on the one hand and signal and interference power on the other hand which have conflicting effects on the channel capacity. We obtain closed form results for the cumulants of the interference, when the desired transmitter node is an arbitrary neighbor of the receiver. We show that to find the cumulants, joint statistics of distances in the PPP will be required which we obtain in closed form. Using the cumulants, we approximate the interference entropy power and obtain bounds on the capacity of the channel between an arbitrary transmitter and the receiver. Our results provide insight and shed light on the capacity of links in a Poisson network. In particular, we show that, in a Poisson network, the closest hop is not necessarily the highest capacity link.

A New Class of Double Integrals

        Aravind K. Anil,Prathima J.,김인숙 한국수학교육학회 2021 純粹 및 應用數學 Vol.28 No.2

In this paper we aim to establish a new class of six definite double integrals in terms of gamma functions. The results are obtained with the help of some definite integrals obtained recently by Kim and Edward equality. The results established in this paper are simple, interesting, easily established and may be useful potentially.

Effect of diet on aflatoxin B1-DNA binding and aflatoxin B1-induced glutathione S-transferase placental form positive hepatic foci in the rat

        Masatomo Kimura,Kiyoko Lehmann,Prathima Gopalan-Kriczky,Prabhakar D. Lotlikar 생화학분자생물학회 2004 Experimental and molecular medicine Vol.36 No.4

Efects of diets on hepatic aflatoxin B1 (AFB1)- DNA binding and AFB1-induced glutathione S- transferase placental (GST-P) form positive hepatic foci have ben examined in young male Fischer rats. Animals were fed either AIN-76A or 1- DNA binding studies in vivo and in vitro. Ani-mals were injected i.p. with AFB1 (1 mg/kg body wt) and 3 days later were given either AIN-76A or PC diet with or without 0.1% phenobarbital (PB) in their drinking water. All animals were sacrificed 10 wks after AFB1 dosing for analysis of AFB1-induced GST-P positive hepatic foci by imunochemistry. Two h after i.p. injection of AFB1, hepatic AFB1rats was twice as much as those in PC fed animals without affecting GSH levels. There was no significant effect of diet on either cyto-chrome P-450 content, GSH levels or micro-somal cytochrome P-450 mediated AFB1-DNA binding to exogenous DNA. There was a 40% increase in cytosolic GSH S-transferase activity with 1-chloro-2,4-dinitrobenzene as a substrate in PC fed animals compared to those given AIN- 76A diet. The number and area of AFB1-induced GST-P positive hepatic foci were twice and fivefold as much in AIN-76A fed compared to 1-indu-ced GST-P positive foci was increased 5-10 fold in the presence of PB in both groups. In sum-mary, the present data indicate that feeding of PC diet compared to AIN-76A diet inhibits the initiation phase whereas AIN-76A stimulates the promotion phase of AFB1 hepatocarcinogenesis in rats by inhibiting AFB1-DNA binding and increasing AFB1-induced hepatic foci respectively.

Further Extension of Two Results Involving ${}_0F_1$ due to Bailey

Frederick Groth,최준상,Prathima J,Arjun Kumar Rathie 영남수학회 2018 East Asian mathematical journal Vol.34 No.5

Bailey presented two interesting identities involving 0F1, which have been generalized by Choi and Rathie who used two hypergeometric summation formulas due to Qureshi et al. In this note, we aim to show how one can establish, in an elementary way, two generalized formulas in- volving 0F1 which include the above-mentioned identities as special cases.

Unicystic ameloblastoma with diverse mural proliferation - a hybrid lesion

Mahadesh, Jyothi,Rayapati, Dilip Kumar,Maligi, Prathima M.,Ramachandra, Prashanth Korean Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology 2011 Imaging Science in Dentistry Vol.41 No.1

A 46-year-old man was referred to our hospital for treatment, complaining of swelling on the right mandibular molar region. Radiographic examination revealed a well defined multilocular radiolucent lesion with root resorption of right lower anteriors and molars. Following biopsy, a diagnosis of unicystic ameloblastoma of mural type was made and hemimandibulectomy was performed under general anesthesia. Histopathological examination of the surgical specimen exhibited a unicystic ameloblastoma of luminal, intraluminal, and mural type. Intraluminal proliferation was of plexiform pattern and mural proliferation showed unusual histopathological findings, which revealed follicular, acanthomatous areas coexisted with desmoplastic areas. This mural picture was similar to the so-called 'hybrid lesion of ameloblastoma', whose biological profile is not elicited due to the lack of adequate published reports. Two years follow up till date has not revealed any signs of recurrence.
